I know! My library doesn't have The Summer Bookand neither does Paperback Swap. I've Wish Listed the book there, but I doubt I'll get a copy before the end of the challenge. Now I'm debating between A Game of Thrones and You Know When the Men Are Gone.

A Game of Thrones. It's long but sooo good.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5208 comments We can repeat the Group Reads task can't we? I wanted to read You Know When the Men are Gone, too, but I'm on the hold list for that one. Of course it works for rhyming, too;) Also, the book I chose Mother's Milk is really good and on the Booker list and the new 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list and its alliteration for those of you who might be still looking for a good choice.

Hi Karen:

I was looking at Mother's Milk but from the blurb it sounded like it was part of a series. (Or came after a series?) Does this need to be read in any particular order with the author's other books?

Yes -- you can repeat the Group Reads task.

I haven't read any other books by the author of Mother's Milk and I didn't notice anything, but I guess I should check that out, too. I have owned the book for awhile, so I didn't look too closely at the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ description!

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5208 comments Well, now I have another book on my TBR. It looks like Some Hope: A Trilogy is about the childhood of the father in Mother's Milk. From my reading experience, Mother's Milk is complete in itself, but I plan to go back and read Some Hope as a prequel.

I really liked You Know When the Men Are Gone. I was in the military during Desert Storm and had done a lot of training at Ft Hood. It was broadening to hear what the families go through. Since it is now a volunteer army, it is the same soldiers going on deployment after deployment in a never-ending string of military objectives. The rest of America who have no loved ones fighting, don't seem to realize the sacrifices they make, not only with their lives, comfort, and safety but also losing a whole year at a time in the lives of their families. Can you imagine missing a whole year of your child's life? Then having to do it again a year or so later. How about the kids? Every once in a while a parent shows up, stays for a while and then has to leave again. The strain on the marriages... well, you can just imagine.
Ok Soapbox done. Point is it is a good read about what our soldiers' and their families are living today, right now.
Oh and you can get combo points for two other tasks as well! (smile)

Sam has indicated that the Sookie books are classified as supernatural, no horror.

From the Spring Cleaning Q&A folder (Msg #20) "For our purposes here, "supernatural" means books that feature ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches etc. in a macabre way. Gandalf and Harry Potter are not macabre (i.e., fantasy), whereas The Dresden Files and the Sookie Stackhouse books are."
