Fredrik Garmannslund | 33 comments Hi! I'm Fredrik, 32 years old and from Norway (the kingdom in Europe, ). My native language is Norwegian (which also enables me to read in Danish and Swedish) but I'm a sci-fi & fantasy fan so for many years I've been obliged to read books in English since most sci-fi/fantasy books have never been translated (though more titles are now available in Norwegian through the last decade). As a full time employee and father I don't find as much time to spend reading as I would like to, but I'll try to read some of the monthly books of this group. :)

Hello, Fredrik, and welcome to the group. I hope you'll enjoy some interesting discussions with us. (I see you already found one of our current book discussions. Great!)

Each month we select a few books for the next month's group reading and discussion (one Classic novel, one Contemporary novel, and one shorter work (novella, short story. or anthology.) Our three polls are currently open to select the titles for April discussions, so please have a look at the nominees and cast your vote for a title you might be interested in discussing with us. (Not that discussions are limited to those books! Past months' book discussions are still open, and we never close those of if you'd like to revisit one.)

By the way, I found that when I finally retired, I had a lot more time for reading then I did when I was working and raising a family. One of those new life phases for me.

Once again, welcome to the group.

Krister Jones (krister_jones) | 8 comments Hello everyone. I read the Earthsea books when I was about ten and have been lost to sci-fi / fantasy ever since! LOTR, Belgariad, Magician... if it's long and it's got swords and a wizard or two then I'm there :) I'm looking forward to some interesting group discussions...

Hi, Krister. Welcome to the group. It's good to have another voice aboard.

I share your love for most of the books you mentioned (except the Belgariad, which I just couldn't seem to get into.)

We're kind of in the interregnum after selecting next month's reads but before getting started on them. Feel free to join in any of the existing conversations, or start a topic of your own! And why not stop in and cast your vote in the current round of Stef's March Madness SF&F Shootout?

And again, welcome.

Thanks for the welcome! It's appreciated. I know what you mean about the Belgariad - it took me a while to get into too (largely because of the huge amount of adverbs) but once I got past that I was ok! I'm off to the Shootout now. Thanks again...

K.V. Johansen | 3 comments Hi! I don't have a lot of time to take part in group reads (too much to read on my plate as it is) but I always enjoy following the discussions for things I've already read, and discovering new authors for later through them too. The classic fantasy and sf has always been some of my favourite reading so I'm looking forward to exploring your discussions further.

´¡²Ô²¹Ã¯²õ | 3 comments Hi all! I'm a 25 year old girl, living in Marseille (France). I discovered the SF genre when I was around 10 with Farenheit 451 (R. Bradbury). 1984, Dune, the Lord of the Rings, the Chronicle of the Black Company... Well, I had so much fun to read those books, I hope I will find good ideas about what to read next in this group!
Besides, may I apologize for my bad english... :-/

Hi, ´¡²Ô²¹Ã¯²õ. Welcome to the group. You seem to have already discovered quite a few gems of SF&F, I hope you'll join us in future discussions. You might find some other ideas among our past book discussions in the Book Discussions folder, or in the Recommendations folder.

In addition to general topics on science fiction, we also like to pick three books each month for group read and discussion: one classic novel, one contemporary novel, and one short story/novella/anthology, chosen through an open nomination process. Nominations for the May read and discussion are now open in the Current Nominations folder. Please feel free to nominate something you'd like to discuss with the group.

Sue | 39 comments Since I'm finally starting to read some of the books chosen by this group, I think it's time to introduce myself.

I'm old enough that Star Wars was a huge influence on my childhood. Enough so that I was quickly marked as a nerd in elementary school.

I also picked up reading quickly, and was reading well beyond my age level from the start. I started out reading a lot of mystery (Three Investigators, Nancy Drew), but I definitely favored sci-fi and fantasy. I read the Hobbit in 6th grade, and read LOTR in the summary before 7th grade. I also read an awful lot of the fantasy and science fiction classics (most of which I haven't bothered to list here).

I'm compulsive about reading, to the point where I get anxious if I finish a book and don't have a new book ready to go.

I joined this group to help me find new books in my favorite genre, and help me discover classics I may have missed.

message 768: by [deleted user] (new)

A belated welcome to the group, Sue. I know you've already found your way around here.

I was almost 30 years old when "Star Wars" was released, and I'd taken the afternoon off from work to go see it opening day at a matinee. I'd always been more of a sci-fi book person than media fan, simply because there wasn't that much media in the pre-Star Wars world.

At any rate, welcome to the group, and I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future!

Hello, Neil, and welcome to both Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ & the group. I hope you'll join us in any ongoing discussions you find interesting; or, start a new topic that is interesting to you.

In addition to whatever sci-fi/fantasy book-related discussions go on, one of the semi-organized activities in this group each month is picking a few books for group reading and discussion. Current and past months' discussions can be found in the Book Discussions folder, where further discussion is always welcome. We choose books for future months, usually based on an open nomination process. You can find Nominations for the May read and discussion in the Current Nominations folder. Please feel free to suggest something, if you like.

And once more, welcome to the group.

Lance Holland | 2 comments Hi guys!

I am Lance and I live in New Zealand. I am a 22 year old university student studying Marketing and Management in my final year of my business degree. Stating the obvious, I love books. A lot. Not just any books however, I mostly reside in a single genre - fantasy/sci fi. I am unashamedly a massive Tolkien fan and own multiple publications of Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. I am also a huge fan of Jordan's Wheel of Time. Many people call WoT a Tolkien clone and to some extent it is, but I find Jordan's detailed and vivid storytelling to be extremely unique and the world he created, Randland, to be masterfully crafted. Reading the last book was one of the best experiences any reader could wish for, and was a reminder to me why I love reading books. They are very personal and use the most powerful tool we humans posses - Imagination. No film, no matter how good, can touch a well written novel in my opinion. Jackson did a great job with LOTR but anyone who has read the books will know you can't beat Tolkiens storytelling.

Some of the more well known authors I am into include Frank Herbert, Raymond E Feist, Tad Williams, Tim Powers (a favourite), Terry Goodkind, Robin Hobb, Patrick Rothfuss (highly recommended) and George RR Martin. I could continue to list more but I fear I could be here typing all bloody day!

My passion for fantasy is, like many people, escapism. I enjoy being pulled into an unknown world where I forget about life and its stresses and problems. I think many of you know what I am getting at! To me what makes a good fantasy novel is a well thought out list of characters and an author that has the talent to bring them to life and keep them believable. For me, characters can't be told by events alone, something that Feist loves to do. To really get into a characters head you need more than that. It's why I love WoT and any of Sandersons novels so damn much. I am a sucker for a happy ending but I enjoy dystopian films so a well written bad ending can be just as effective if done right. However the fantasy genre isn't exposed to many of these types of dystopic ideals.

I am running short of time but it is a pleasure to meet you all and I look forward to engaging with you in future discussions.

Long live Fantasy,
-Lance

I got through to book 7 or 8 (I forget exactly) and got so angry when I realized the entire book took place in about 10 minutes real time! I resolved to step away from the series.

However, since then, the author died and another author finished the story. I've heard that the point at which I abandoned the story was truly the low point in the series, so I'm willing to give it another shot.

Just like Lance, I enjoy it when the story includes a lot of detail about the world. That's why I liked Robert Jordan in the first place. It's also why I like Brandon Sanderson, Tad Williams, and yes, George RR Martin. All of them also follow multiple POVs.

Hi, Lance. Welcome to the group. I think you'll find most of us here share your passion for science fiction and fantasy in general, and Brandon Sanderson in particular (his books are featured in five of our Book Discussions in the past.

Also, please drop into our Wheel of Time Discussion and add your thoughts on the series. (Not one of our "official" book discussions, since we avoid books that require a lot of prequel-reading. But last January, after I waited 25 years for the series to conclude, I couldn't restrain myself!)

Through the course of 2012, in preparation for the release of the final book of The Wheel of Time, "A Memory of Light," last January, I re-read most of the series. However, I just did a quick skim of books 8-11, since they are kind of slow. The final three volumes really pick up the pace to a terrific finish (IMO).

Charlotte (Buried in Books) I'm Charlotte, and I've been on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ for quite a few years now. I used to read a lot of Fantasy in my teenage years, but got sidetracked by other genres.

Lately though I've been feeling the need to get back to the sci fi/fantasy realms. Suddenly realised I have tons of books that I haven't got round to reading, like Dragons of Autumn Twilight, A Game of Thrones, Mistborn: The Final Empire, The Left Hand of Darkness, Consider Phlebas, Dune, The Eye of the World etc.

I also picked up quite a few of the Barsoom books free on Kindle after seeing John Carter a little while ago.

Looking forward to joining in the discussions.

Barbara (goodreadscombarb57) Hi! My name is Barb. I'm 55 yrs and have read quite a bit from many genre's, but sci-fi is my favorite. In sci-fi my favorite is currently c.j. cherryh, humor is
Terry pratchet. Fantasy is Robert Jordan's Wheel of time, just recently finished posthumously by Sanderson's #14. He did an excellent job. Sideline genre such as horror I have come to appreciate Dean Koontz's milder writings, though I really enjoyed Duma Key by King.
So that's my book preferences. Personally, I'm single and loving it, though wouldn't mind a few friends who share my conviction that life is totally rediculous and endlessly humorous. I even admit to liking...PUNS!
Please don't shoot me unless it's with a well shaken beverage.
I won't be a constant or prolific commentator. Silence is agreement, though I might write that I agree to disagree, then endlessly tell you why. Hey, that's what moderators are for, right? Seriously, though, I can't see myself doing more than a snide remark...or two.
So here I am and I hope you like me in the club. Barb

Hi, Wade. Welcome to both Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and our little SF/HF group. I see you've already found some of our discussions here in the group. We're glad you joined in.

If you haven't already, you may want to check out the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Author Program and set up an author account. It will let you promote your books, tie into your blog, schedule of events (online and real world), add a bio, and other tools for connecting with Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ readers. (At least that's what they tell me. I stick to reading, myself.)

Again, welcome to the group. And good luck with your blog & new book.

Sean Brennan | 5 comments Hi.
I'm a 47 year young Brit, about 18 month's ago I decided to follow the history of SF by reading Analog chronologically from 1958 onwards(I'm up to 63). As a sort of time traveller from their future, thus I could see what the writers got right and got wrong. Immediately, with a sense of dread, the question burned inside of me, what will be the consequences to mankind with the loss of the PIPE SMOKING SCIENTIST. I feel that this is the main reason I do not have my own personal jet pack.

Reading Analog has introduced me to many SF writers I had never heard off H Beam Piper, Mack Reynolds, Chris Anvil et al. So a lot of my reading at present is based around early 60's pulps.

My all time faves are The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F Hamilton, Songs of Distant Earth, The Chung Kuo series by David Wingrove.

Fantasy I love Glen Cook, Jasper Fforde and The Dark Tower. I am also a complete comic book fanatic.

So I look forward to being part of a group of like minded escapism lovers.

Cheers

Sean

Hello, Sean, and welcome to the group.

That sounds like a very interesting project, reading all those back issues. I started reading Analog sometime in the early sixties, but never really continuously until last couple years; and I have more than enough short stories to read these days keeping up with the four modern magazines I to subscribe to. I look forward to hearing some of your historical observations in our discussions here.

As to the scientists: [Inserts pipe in mouth.] Honestly, young man, we scientists all retired after the inquisitive reporters disappeared. Oh, they seemed like pests at the time, always asking questions like, "Why are there giant scorpions attacking the town, Doctor?" Or, "How long will it take the spaceship to reach Mars, Professor?". But once the reporters were gone, it just seemed like there was no point to existence anymore. So we all retired to Arizona (same place the giant scorpions came from). Of course, they don't let us actually light our pipes these days, but I still hold on to it. Thank you for asking the question; reminds me of the Golden Age of Exposition.

By the way, as one of our group's "organized" activities, the we picks a few specific books to read and discuss each month, with discussions in the Book Discussions folder. We are currently collecting nominations for our May discussions in the Current Nominations folder, divided into Classic Novel, Contemporary Novel, and Short Story/Novella/Anthology. Please feel free to suggest something, if you like; we still have a few days before we put the May selections to a vote.

I rather enjoy military sci-fi myself (especially Starship Troopers, The Forever War, Dorsai, Old Man's War, The Confederation, Honor Harrington, The Lost Fleet, and Vatta's War). I'm also a fan of Forester's & Cornwell's historical military fiction. Have any military SF favorites of your own?

Hi, Katie, and welcome to both Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and our group. I hope you find both worthwhile. Martin's A Game of Thrones has been a gateway book for a number of new heroic fantasy fans over the last few years (partly thanks to HBO and partly thanks to frequently placing high on the New York Times bestseller list, I'm sure.)

Hi, Angie, and welcome to the group. I hope you find our discussions interesting. If not, start one that is!

If you like Brandon Sanderson, you're not alone here. We've had several of his works up for our monthly reads and discussions. Those discussions never end, so feel free to look for our Book Discussions folder, where you'll find discussions of his Mistborn, The Way of Kings, Elantris, and "The Emperor's Soul", as well as A Memory of Light . Plus he has several titles on our "Upcoming Books You're Looking Forward To..." topic.

On the other hand, I don't think we've selected a Hamilton novel yet. (I know I've had his Pandora's Star sitting by my reading chair for some time; just haven't picked it off the top yet.) Maybe during the next open nomination period for Contemporary Novel discussions you can add one of your favorite books of his to our nominee list. (We're currently changing the timing of our book reads to spread them out a bit, so it's going to be a few weeks before there's an open nomination for Contemporary Novel while we're in transition.)

Anyway, enough babbling for me, I just wanted to say welcome!

Angie Hi sean and G33z3r,thanks for the welcome. Peter Hamilton was the first big sci-fi book I ever read so he will always be special to.me. From him I'VE got into so many others. As for Brandon Sanderson how can anyone not like his work. I'll definitely go check out the discussions.Oh, you should really read Pandoras Star because it is so so good.

Hi. Tallulah. Welcome to the group. I hope you will join into so our discussions here; if no current topic interests you, start one that does!. In addition to general chatter, we also have topics dedicated to specific books (we pick a pair each month, one classic and one contemporary, though older discussions never end if you'd like to add your own thoughts to one or more of them.)

Were glad to have you aboard.
