Hello Jason and Drew, welcome to the Sci-fi and Heroic Fantasy group.

Hillary Major | 436 comments Hi; I'm Hillary -- glad to have found the group! I read most anything, but fantasy and SF are probably closest to my heart. I haven't always had much luck coordinating my leisure reading schedule with a book group's, but Wild Cards has been on my to-read list for a while now, so I may have to bump it a little higher up in the pile!

Hi, Hillary. Welcome to the group. As with you, Wild Cards has been on my "to read" list for quite some time, and I never quite got around to it. One of the things this group does is give me the incentive to actually read titles like that. I look forward to having you join us for that discussion.

Hi, Victor, and welcome to the group. (Bonjour, and that exhausts my current French.) I'm looking forward to talking about science fiction with you. I'm delighted to have another fan of short stories around. It's one of my favorite forms of science fiction, short and to the point, concentrating on one speculation.

Each month we select a short story, novella, or anthology for group discussion. (In addition to a couple of novels.) As a short story fan, you might be interested in this month's choice, Wild Cards, which is a multi-author shared premise collection.

Do read a lot of the US magazines, such as Analog or the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction? Or do you read mostly anthologies? Or online sources?

My wife and I also love dancing to rock and roll! I live with my wife of 40 years and our two dogs. Before I retired I was a systems programmer and nights and weekends we flipped houses (ergo retiring young). I look forward to...everything, LOL!

message 924: by Daran (new)

Daran | 73 comments My names is Daran. I joined this group because I enjoy heroic fantasy, and I liked many of the books you've read in the past. I'm a huge Tolkien fan, and I make it a point to read the The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings once a year. These days, I most anticipate the Iron Druid books by Kevin Hearne, the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, and the huge volume of work put out by Brandon Sanderson.

What finally got me to join was your reading Throne of the Crescent Moon, which I had been wanting to discuss with a group.

Hi, Daran, and welcome to the group. Sounds like your taste is going to fit right in here. Please do join in our discussion of Throne of the Crescent Moon. The conversation there has kind of petered out, and could use a new infusion of opinion!

(Also feel free to reignite any of the discussions of Brandon Sanderson's works in our Book Discussions Folder. We've read quite a few of his books, including Mistborn, Elantris, The Emperor's Soul, and the Way of Kings. I think he's been our most discussed author.)

message 927: by Rogue-van (new)

Rogue-van (the Bookman) (rogue_van) | 9 comments Hi, My name is Roger A. van Oosten, and I have been collecting science fiction and fantasy for 55 years. I'm a part-time college librarian. When I studied church history with the brilliant John Warwick Montgomery, he said that if he was to be stuck on a mountain top and could only take 3 books, he would take the Bible first, then Lord of the Rings, then debate the third. I agree. Tolkien elevated fantasy in my lifetime to a level of beauty and complexity never before seen. Before Tolkien, I had settled for the heroic adventures in comic books, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Heinlein, etc. Now I enjoy fantasy series by Robin Hobb, Robert Jordan, etc. and space adventures about Vorkosigans, Ender Wiggin, and especially Honor Harrington (as well as her earth sea predecessor, Horatio Hornblower.) Set me on to some more fantastic adventurers!

Roger wrote: "Hi, My name is Roger A. van Oosten, and I have been collecting science fiction and fantasy for 55 years. I'm a part-time college librarian...."

Hi, Roger, welcome to the group.

We share a number of passions in common. I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings, Heinlein, Jordan's The Wheel of Time, Card's Ender saga, and Weber's Honorverse, and I'm working my way through Bujold's Vorkosigan books (Bujold has several fans here in the group, and I took their recommendation.) Have you tried any of Brandon Sanderson's books besides the conclusion of The Wheel of Time, such as Mistborn or Elantris? Or perhaps Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet military space opera series?

Anyway, we have had group discussions of many of the books you mentioned (each month we select a couple of books to read and discuss together. You can find most of them in our Book Discussions Folder, and they're always open for new comments. I hope you'll join in any discussion there or elsewhere in the Group that strikes your fancy.

I look forward to talking with you further!

Megan Earley (megan_earley) | 1 comments My name is Megan, and I'm the author of the Memories Trilogy. First two books in the trilogy, Memory of Prophecy and Memory's Darkness are finished and available through Amazon, B&N, etc. I'm currently working on Memory's Illusion, but it's coming along rather slow due to school.
I've also got several other book series puttering around in my head, in hopes of being written.
I am currently self-published, but I hope one day to actually be published through a publisher (other than my own company)

Brian Turner | 4 comments Hi, I'm Brian, getting on a bit but have been into fantasy and sci-fi since we read Wizard of Earthsea at school. The first school book I would read as soon as I got home as well as in the class. Since then, have read Lord of the Rings at least once a year since I was 16, Dune (in one day - take my time with it now), Starship Troopers etc.
Have amassed just over 30 of the classic Battletech novels, some are a bit hit and miss, but overall a good timeline and escapism.

Hi, Marv, welcome to the group. We love both kinds of books here, Fantasy and Science Fiction. Check out any of the existing discussions and join in any that interest you. Or, start a new topic that does. Each month we pick one classic and one contemporary SF&F novel to discuss as a group. Our current and past conversations are in the Book Discussions folder, if you spot any there you read and would like to comment on. Or, visit the "What was the first sci fi / fantasy book you read?" topic and let us know what you already enjoyed.

I look forward to seeing your thoughts and opinions.
