I went to Stephen Fry's book tour for The Ode Less Travelled, his book on poetry, and I had to ask a question just so I could say I've spoken to him :) Queued for ages for a signed copy and he very kindly thanked me for my question. Such a nice chap. Great book, too - taught me a lot more about poetry than I ever learnt at school and all in his usual witty style.

Has anyone picked up some favourite authors signatures on their books lately? I was lucky enough to get Matthew Reilly's when he signed Scarecrow and the Army of Thieves for me. Also Helene Young signed Wings of Fear and Shattered Sky plus Lisa Heidke signed Stella Makes Good! So I think I've done very well!!

I also won a book by Shaun Tan..The Lost Thing which was signed by Shaun...thanks Carmel:)

I too have Oliver Phommavanh's signed Thai-riffic. Taught him at Hoxton Park High School some years ago. Did have Susan Leal's autographed copy of Border Street but have donated to school library.

Hey Brenda - she actually did an author signing at my local Dymocks - must be 4 or 5 years ago now. She was very friendly and looked nothing like her publicity pictures!

I have most of my Tamora Pierce Books signed and I did a project on Anne McCaffrey in HS and sent her a long questionaire which she graciously answered and included a "dragonhold" autographed book plate

I have an autographed book called Plague Dogs, by Richard Adams who wrote Watership Down. He spoke to me as he signed it. I also have a letter from Joy Cowley which I keep inside one of her books. It has a special poem in it that she wrote for my children. I have a lot of signed books by some quite well known authors as I've been to a lot of signings and these famous ones quite often do come here to NZ and do book signings.
I myself go into schools and do "author" days sometimes because of my children's stories in the school journals and my picture books. The children think that every author is a famous author so they bring you scraps of paper to sign and then when one does it they all do and you end up signing zillions of little bits of paper. Then as you leave the school later, you see these same little pieces of paper littering the grounds each one with your signature on it.

One of these days, I'll find a stern-faced litter control officer knocking on my door to ask "What's the meaning of this?" and he'll hold up a bag of litter all signed by me.

I work in a school library, so I have a few books signed by children's authors. Just makes the book a little more special, especially when kids see the autograph. They think it is amazing that the author actually touched the book!

If you have a look at my photos on my profile (I don't know how to put it in here) I have a really nice inscription from Anthony Lawrence, who went to school with my husband, so my husband organised this because he knew I was a fan - one of the nicest things he could have done!
