Kimberly Hicks (kiwes) | 3 comments Hi All,

I was wondering with so many indie authors out here, such as myself, do you ever read any of their books in your groups to help support them? If so, who have you read and what did you think of their book or books?

To read book reviews of my latest novel, SILENT KNIGHT, listed on ŷ go to . I also have a FREE BOOK GIVEAWAY to the 50th subscriber to my blog. To download SILENT KNIGHT, you can read a sample chapter, on WRITE ON!

I'm about supporting indie authors, and I'd like to know how many of you do the same?

message 2: by Jeanine (new)

Jeanine (truejourney) Lately, I have been reading more books written by Indie authors more than anything else.
Right now I am reading Ethereal by Addison Moore.
I just finished the third book in the Peachville Demon series by Sara Cannon.
I've read all of Amanda Hocking's self-published books and am a huge fan of her, J.L. Bryan, Stacey Wallace Benefiel, S.l. Naeole, and I am sure I am forgetting a million others. I will check out your books as well :)

message 3: by Sean (new)

Sean Cronin | 49 comments I read indy authors. I am one. The business has changed so quickly, name authors like Barry Eisler are now indys.
Hope you check my page here on ŷ, link to promos for my novel, mystery, out in June.
Sean

message 4: by Scott (new)

Scott Collins | 16 comments I switch back and forth between the classics and indies. Every now and then a throw in a mainstream author, but I'd say at least half of the books I've read recently are by indie authors.

Helen Smith, Barbara Silkstone, David McAfee and Michael Robb are some of my recent favorites.

Ian Kharitonov (iankharitonov) | 9 comments I'm switching more to reading indie authors now, being one as well. There's real quality to be found there at low prices, from a consumer's point of view. I'm currently reading crime fiction like Murderson and Dark Quarry: A Mike Angel PI Mystery, really enjoyed books by J. Carson Black as well. A few more on my shelf that I'm looking forward to. And of course, if anyone likes action/adventure/espionage novels, you should check out The Russian Renaissance by yours truly! :D

Sean Cronin | 49 comments Good to see support for indys. Same as music business where listening to indys, for me, is the best way to get pleased, surprised and generally satisfied.

Patricia Puddle (trishapuddle) | 57 comments I'm an indie author of children's books, but while I was learning, I supported many children's books authors and spent hundreds of dollars on their books. But now I'm published, I've found that those authors don't support indie authors. Maybe it's because so many book shops are going under but it's not the indie author's fault.

Anyway, if I have any spare cash for books, I now support the indie authors on ŷ first, though I still buy books through bookshops and from regular publishers sometimes, but it has to be a great one. I now always put the indie authors first.

Here's some great indi books I've purchased.: A Job From Hell (Ancient Legends) by Jayde Scott A Job From Hell

Alex Gonzo, Royal Spy by Jayde Scott Alex Gonzo, Royal Spy

qi by Elizabeth Svigar Stephen qiqi

The Converging The Converging (Converging Trilogy, #1) by George Straatman

Dark Warrior To Tame a Wild Hawk by Lenore Wolfe Dark Warrior: To Tame a Wild Hawk

ABC From Land And Sea by Irene Kueh ABC From Land And Sea

123 from Land and Sea by Kathy Kesner 123 from Land and Sea

Tempest by Holly Hook Tempest

Ratticus A True Tale from Critter Corner by Raymond Birdsell Ratticus: A True Tale from Critter Corner

Not What She Seems by Victorine E. Lieske Not What She Seems

Color Me Grey by J.C. Phelps
Color Me Grey

Misfit McCabe by LK Gardner-Griffie
Misfit McCabe

I've read most, but am still reading others. There are also others I haven't added as I can't seem to find the link to them.

They are all great writers anyway, indie or regular published.

Rock on, all you indies. If you're interested in children's books I have two Giveaways, plus another one coming up in a few days.

Great thread, Kimberly. Thanks for that.

Mike, I'm and indie too. LOL. It's much quicker than waiting around forever, and I love how we have control over our work. I just wish I had time to read everyone's books.

Scott (bookblogger) I started reading indie authors at Christmas when I got my kindle. Now I have written over 50 reviews (amazon mainly but smashwords, shelfari, and goodreads as well) and started a blog to help publicize indie releases with reviews, interviews, guest blogs, and giveaways. I wish I knew more people who read that lived in my area so I could be in a book club and share some of the amazing books I have read.

My blog can be found at if anyone wants to stop by and say hi. (there is a coupon for a free book active right now)

If you want a new book, ask and you shall receive. A free coupon to download on Smashwords. :) My pleasure.

C. C. (cjoybellc) | 12 comments I am an independent writer! :) I never had the time or interest enough to even attempt to be published traditionally! :) Ironically enough, I think that's because I'm a traditional writer! I believe that when you "make a book", you do just that, you "make a book" and so I have made books! :) This is what independent publishing empowers you to do, to make your own books! :) I'm primarily published in Paperback and then also in Kindle, click on me if you want to find out more! Cheers to all! :)

I love to support indie authors (especially since I am one!) and have found an amazing amount of talent that traditional publishers are missing out on!

Puramore: The Lute of Pythagoras

Puramore is my debut indie novel.

About six months ago I decided to go the indie route as an author. In retrospect, I'm glad I did, especially since the old publishing model is becoming less and less relevant for authors over time.

message 38: by Sonia (new)

Sonia Meyer (someyericloudcom) | 12 comments I went with a small press, the Wilderness House Press. It has been and is a wonderful experience. To me it feels like what it must been for authors of the past, when the now big publishing corporations were like the small presses of today. A networking, one looking out for the other. I highly recommend it. My own novel has been doing quite well, still best-selling on Amazon. of course ups and downs. Books stores is another matter. I find most so risk-averse. Anyway, let's exchange experiences.

message 39: by J.H. (new)

J.H. Soeder (jhsoeder) I think this is a great place to find good reads! I am an Indie Author as well. My name is J.H. Soeder (jon) and I just released my newest book "Haddie's in Our Closet" It is a true ghost story and quite funny! For the people interested in reading it, send me an email and I will give you a code for a free e-book!

The offer is good through this coming weekend - August 31, 2011.

Now I need to check out some of these great books everyone else is writing about. I definitely believe in supporting Indie authors. The best way is to start getting some of these books and doing reviews!

Best, Jon

message 40: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Petkus (jenniferpetkus) | 8 comments I wonder if it counts to be reading indie authors who have since become published by “real publishing companies. It’s an effect I’ve noticed in the Jane Austen world, someone writes fan fiction, then self publishes, then actually gets a real book deal. It gives me hope for my own Jane Austen related efforts.

message 41: by Sonia (new)

Sonia Meyer (someyericloudcom) | 12 comments Many famous authors self-published at first. What matters is the quality of your writing. The climate is though for literature right now. But I am hopeful. Bad television, bad movies, are driving readers back to the text.
Also, don't overestimate the 'real publishers', they are also 'real corporations'.

message 42: by J.H. (new)

J.H. Soeder (jhsoeder) I think that the ebooks are helping get people back to reading, even if it seems a novelty for some. As more of these e-readers and pads show up that can pretty much do most everything - and lighter/less bulky than a laptop - it seems that reading may come back into vogue, don't you think?

The Spirits of Magic by Stuart Jaffe A fantasy tale about a woman taking on a witch in order to find out the difference between a dream world and reality.

message 49: by Sonia (new)

Sonia Meyer (someyericloudcom) | 12 comments I think this is a great group. It is not, in the end, who or how you publish, but how the book is marketed. And that is almost always up to the author.
I have done very well with my historical novel Dosha, flight of the Russian Gypsies
BUT, I have been working very hard at it. The editing, had that done professionally, the choosing of a small press, etc. The novel also has a mission, raise awareness to the Gypsy people and their persecutions. If you check it out, if anyone of us buys, it should be on Amazon, to get visibility. That is important: visibility for new authors.

I'm delighted to be invited to join this wonderful group and here are two of my E-books which are published on both Amazon and Smashwords. Here is the link to Amazon UK site: . Do check them out to see if you'd like to read them, or try my author page here at GR.

Hope you find them enjoyable and happy reading/writing!
