Would you read the book.

I am on page 110 out of 450 in The Princess Bride. I highly dislike this book because the story line is very confusing. In the begin of the book there is a 60 page introduction on not even the real book. Ounce you started the book it talks about a play that a group of people are doing. Then the book stats with a fantasy that is confusing. The book in general is very boring and I recommend not reading it.

It sounds like you aren't reading the version with just the good parts ;)

I absolutely loved Goldman's version. He did a great job on taking out the chapter about her entire wardrobe. I will put that book on my top ten. His side comments made me laugh. I love the book more then the film.

Matthew No, that's a metaphorical conceit. Goldman made up the book entire story. He's just using the conceit of the "Good Parts Version" in order to tell som ...more

It took me years to get around to reading The Princess Bride. I found the book dull and disappointing. I was especially irritated by Goldman's little asides. This is one of those rare occasions where the film was better than the book. Forget the book, rent the movie instead. It was superb!

Without the conceit of the frame, the asides, the Morgenstern, it's actually a fairly silly fantasy. I mean, why does Wesley love the self-centered vain little b****? Why does Buttercup change her mind and love him? And the drama was so totally over-the-top.

But read the frame and the asides, and think about them. Figure out what he was pretending to share, think about why he's telling you all that (false) stuff. For example, do you know about the stereotypes of the Jews in Hollywood? (I don't know much, but enough to realize why his made-up family helped him parody those stereotypes.)

I have always loved this movie and when I stumbled across the book one time I bought it to read. I thought it was OK first time round and I have just re-read it again and loved it. I really like to asides and still love the Buttercup/Wesley story that is in the frame narrative.

Both are treasures!

450 pages??? I'm pretty sure the version of the book that I read was like 200 pages and it was HYSTERICAL! I love the bit at the beginning about how she becomes the most beautiful woman.

I loved the book but I'm also a huge fan of the movie. When reading the book you need to understand that there really is no book called the Princess Bride. Goldman writes like he is talking about a real book and he is fixing the boring parts. If you go into it thinking that there really is a book called the Princess Bride it can get confusing and by the end you'll believe that all the places in the book are real. The story from the movie is still there just be prepared for more than just that.

I've seen the movie enough times that I can almost quote the entire thing. I got the book, and it’s on my want to read list. I'm just curious how different they are. I always look at books and movies as two different things, so it doesn't bother me if it is, but I just like to know ahead of time so I don't go in with different expectations.

I really liked the book. It was an interesting and fun read.

I love this film and have seen it too many times to count. When I finally read the book, I really enjoyed it, but don't feel the need to read it again. Whereas I can feel a movie night coming on soon...

:D

I can see why it could be confusing.

But I loved the introduction. At first I didn't quite understand it but then I realized that it was rather funny.

and I love the little asides in the text.

I've seen the movie like a thousand times, and it's really good. And I actually bought the book, but it turned out to be abridged. I was so angry!!

Most of the time, books are better than the movie adaptations, in this case, the movie was better.

The movie is fantastic, but honestly this book is so good! Please stick with it, it gets better.

I seem to be in the minority. I love the book, but then, I read it before seeing the movie. It really does make a difference.

I like both.

Read the book in HS and maybe once more since then. It was an enjoyable read.

I thought Goldman's asides were hilarious and I enjoyed the book a lot. I would reccomend it to anyone who enjoyed the film.

I've read the book. It's very unique. ;)
