Junying | 262 comments I'v got the Oslo trilogy, so I'll be starting Redbreast next - anyone reading Jo Nesbo or am I the only one so far behind?

Thanks for the list, Guys!

message 52: by Caise (new)

Caise you are not the only one :-) I'm going to start reading Jo Nesbo next week ;-) I already bought all available in Poland books by Nesbo. I'm really excited and can't wait to start them:)

Kerry Woodward (kezee) | 10 comments Hi Junying - i've only read 'The Snowman' and have started reading 'The Redbreast', so you're not alone :-)

message 55: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 100 comments I'm reading The Redeemer - my first Jo Nesbo and I know - wrong order - but I'd already started when I realised, so I'll read The Redbreast next!

I really liked this one Maggie... you will need to go back to the beginning to "get" Harry and all the other characters..but a great book nonetheless...it's not a spoiler, but watch out for the vacuum cleaner!

The Redeemer works pretty well on it's own. You'll have missed a little of Harry's backstory, but otherwise it doesn't tie in too much to the other books in the series. Was definitely one of my favorites though

Allison | 5 comments Arnaldur Indridason is one of my most favorite authors. I have not read everything he has written but cannot stay away! Im curious if anyone has read any books by Anders Roslund and Borge Hellstrom? I just finished Box 21 and also loved that. Also written by them is Three Seconds and Cell 8.

Hi Allison
I have read 3 seconds ...really struggled with it until about half way through but was then really gripped...I am planning to read Cell 8 and then if I like that, work my way back to Box 21 or maybe The Beast. Reading Indridason at the moment ( Silence of the Grave) but I am struggling to get into this..I don't think I like books that switch between different time periods

Allison wrote: Im curious if anyone has read any books by Anders Roslund and Borge Hellstrom..."

I thought BOX 21 was absolutely brilliant - 5 star rating. Very dark and very sad but very well told story. THREE SECONDS on the other hand was one of the big disappointments of the year for me...such a different book to the earlier one and I thought written with the American market too much in mind. But everyone else seems to love it so what do I know.

message 61: by [deleted user] (new)

Just finished The Hypnotist. Ugh. Not my cup of tea at all - silly science and gore infused violence

Rachel | 53 comments Bernadette wrote: "Just finished The Hypnotist. Ugh. Not my cup of tea at all - silly science and gore infused violence"

Thanks for those comments Bernadette - I have bought The Hypnotist so I might as well read it anyway ! I definitely think that Roslund and Hellstrom are authors I would like to read more of though I certainly had issues with Three Seconds

Maggie | 100 comments I'm really enjoying The Redeemer - its a real page turner.

message 64: by Junying (new)

Junying | 262 comments I have just started Redbreast.

message 65: by Dave (new)

Dave | 113 comments I finished Jussi Adler-Olsen's "Mercy" (aka - The Keeper of Lost Causes) over the weekend and highly recommend! Moments of laugh out loud humour, enough mystery to keep me guessing, and so intense near the end that I actually had to put the book down and stretch because my shoulders felt knotted with anxiety at the outcome. This was book one and first in translation (someone actually decided to translate a series in order? What a concept!) in the Department Q series and I can't wait for more.

message 66: by Junying (new)

Junying | 262 comments Thanks, Dave. I bought Mercy with my other two Nesbo books last week, so it is on my To-read list now.

message 67: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 100 comments I read Mercy afew weeks ago - really enjoyed it, a real page turner. I can't wait for more in this series either.

Hi Lisbeth - is that your real name or a tribute to Lasson? :) Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I feel exactly the same as you do about this sad loss of a genius writer. I loved his books so much and I pre-ordered his second and third in hardbacks. Have done that before or since :)

message 70: by Junying (new)

Junying | 262 comments Lisbeth wrote: "Hi Junying, It's not my real name :) , as you said it's a tribute to Larsson's character (lisbeth salander), my real one is Btissam Zejly and I'm from Casablanca, Morocco."

Lovely to meet you here, Lisbeth - it's a lovely name. Btissam is lovely too, but probably more difficult for us foreigners to pronounce :) Love Salander - have you watched the Swedish films based on these books? They were good, and now I'm anticipating Daniel Craig's - the Hollywood remake - I just hope that they do a good job :)

message 71: by Junying (new)

Junying | 262 comments A big fan of Daniel Craig anyway, and a even bigger fan of Stieg Lasson - so I'm game whatever they do :)

message 72: by Rick (new)

Allison | 5 comments Rick wrote: "Just finished Kjell Eriksson's The Princess of Burundi (pretty good, but not great). I'm moving on to Silence of the Grave (Indridason)."

Are you reading the Indridason books in order? I liked the Princess of Burundi but found the following books in that series better.

message 75: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 53 comments I have been reading them in order so far Allison..but I have got Outrage as the next one to read, as I was less keen on the plot outlines of the earlier books. I may give myself a break from Indridason altogether though, as Silence of the Grave has left me underwhelmed so far

message 76: by Rick (last edited Aug 24, 2011 10:42AM) (new)

Rick (ricocan49) | 9 comments Interesting, because I am really enjoying Silence of the Grave so far. Also I make a habit of not reading the same author twice in a row. I suppose it gives me more variety, however, sometimes it is difficult to keep all of the recurring characters straight.

Maggie | 100 comments Alex wrote: "I'd avoid the US remake of the first Larsson book and watch the complete original trilogy instead :))"

I really enjoyed the original trilogy - Lisbeth Salander was perfect I reckon. I will watch the US remake because its directed by David Fincher - but Daniel Craig? oh no!

I haven't read Jar City - its been on my TBR list for a while. I did see the film and thought it really good. Loved the part where he bought his 'take out' sheeps head from a drive thru - think I prefer Kentucky!

message 81: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 100 comments Finished The Redeemer last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a real page turner - and one of the few books that kept me guessing till the end. I've got all the other Jo Nesbo books to read now - and I'll read them in order now! I have been reading quite a bit of crime fiction so may have to read different genre next though. I'm really eager to read another 'Harry Hole' but I reckon it may be too much too soon - and I don't want to spoil it!

Don't worry Maggie..unless your speak Norwegian or possibly Polish ( Nesbo is very popular there I gather)..there is little chance of reading the first two books anytime soon as they have not yet been translated. I gather that as Nesbo is now so popular they are planning to translate the first two books in the near future.

However, The Redbreast is in so many ways the "start" of the Harry Hole series - it is the first in the so-called Oslo trilogy and we are introduced to his great love , Rakel. I know Rakel doesn't feature much in The Redeemer which you have read...but she is there is the later books and I think an important part of Harry's story...and their "courtship" is very endearingly told.

You do get a glimpse into books one and two ( The Batman, The Cockroaches) when you read Nemesis (and also The Snowman) - but bearing in mind most English speaking Nesbo fans won't have read the first 2 books..I wouldn't worry. Just work your way through the books that are currently available in English.

Dave | 113 comments This week I've read "Snow Angels" and "Lucifer's Tears" by James Thompson. He's an American born author who has lived in Finland for about twelve years now.

Both books were excellent and extremely hard to put down, I was up till 3am tuesday finishing "Snow Angels" and tempted to take a day off work yesterday to finish "Lucifer's Tears".

These are the first two books in the Inspector Kari Vaara series. I found Kari a very likeable and also refreshing character in that he is both "not" an alcoholic, and is happily married. He has his skeletons in the closet but he's not as damaged or stereotypical as many of the characters we often see in this genre. Kari is also married to an American which lends itself to some great reflections on the struggles of an American living abroad and adjusting to both the culture and the language. Both books were also peppered with wonderful descriptions of Finland and it's culture as well as many Finnish phrases and their translations giving the reader a great sense of setting and a little lesson in Finnish if you're so inclined.

Overall I'd highly recommend both books, although I will offer a word of caution to those readers with more delicate sensibilities. These books are very graphic in their descriptions of the murder victims (especially "Snow Angels") So just be advised. Otherwise, if you're looking for a great page turner with some insight into Finland and it's culture definitely check them out!

That's not a bad idea. I've read it, but would happily reread.

I've just started The Return of the Dancing Master and am hooked. I'm avoiding the discussion thread till I'm finished.

Also, I've just ordered Snow Angels for the stack.

Just posted authors by country, may have spelled some names wrong. I want to welcome James Thompson to our club. Have one of your books with the other on its way.

Oh I wouldn't mind getting involved in that - I've never done a group read before but not sure how it works. I think I will try and get a copy tomorrow just in case this takes off!

Allison | 5 comments Currently, I am reading Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg. "One of Sweden's youngest successful female writers in her genre, Läckberg's books are always set in or around her birthplace, the small Swedish west coast town of Fjällbacka." Im enjoying the book a lot and look forward to reading the sequel, The Preacher. Thanks to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, I found this author on one of my friends list, otherwise I don't know that I wold have found her. However, before I started this book I took a break from the Swedish authors I love so much and read a Lisa Unger book Beautiful lies. Didn't care for that much and just seems like I am more drawn to the foreign author group.

message 99: by Junying (new)

Junying | 262 comments Yes, I did enjoy Ice Princess as well, but then I more or less forgot about it afterwards that I have read it. Anyway, I gave it a three-star just now for liking it enough :)

Rachel | 53 comments Oh I really do feel like the party pooper with this author..did not like her writing at all. But I can see from everyone else's reviews that I am in the minority! Oh well, it would be boring if we all loved every book equally
