I finished a non-Scandinavian book "A Small Death in Lisbon" for the second time. It's funny because I've read it before but I don't think I got as much from it the first read. This book goes into detail how everything fits together.

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 236 comments Waiting for Lucifer's Tears to arrive so finished "Anatomy of a Murder" and in the middle of "About Face" . Do love Dona Leon's Brunetti. I know Venetian not Scandi.
Also waiting for Anne Holt's 1222.

I know, I love Scandi but I like Inspector Montalbano also. He has a new book coming out in English. Too bad I'm not like Anna who can read in Italian. I would have all of Camilleri's books by now.

Shouldn't there be an Italian Noir?

message 157: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 236 comments Yes absolutely!

Dave | 113 comments Sharon wrote: "Shouldn't there be an Italian Noir?"

I'd certainly be happy to create a discussion area specifically for Noir outside of Scandinavia if anyone's interested. I've actually been on an L.A. Noir kick lately myself and have been reading Ross MacDonald, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and am currently in the middle of James Ellroy's American Underground Trilogy.

I'd be curious to hear and discuss other's recommendations of "Noir from Around the World"

message 159: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabeth8921) | 236 comments I am all for it however you want to do the topic.

message 160: by Dave (new)

Dave | 113 comments I've added a group folder titled "The Wide World of Crime Fiction" for anyone who wants to discuss non-scandinavian crime related books, authors, and genres they are interested in. There's a "Noir" post to get started with.

Absolutely fabulous....thanks.

message 162: by Fizzycola (new)

Fizzycola | 163 comments I just finished Tursten's Eldsdansen (Fire Dance - has it been translated to English?) I liked it very much!

Now starting Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indriðason.

message 163: by James (new)

James Thompson (jamesthompson) | 310 comments The group doesn't show yet. I tried to join.

message 164: by Dave (new)

Dave | 113 comments I just created a folder within this group page to act as a forum for expanded discussion. I figured although Scandinavian crime brought us all together, that doesn't mean we can't talk about additional crime fiction authors and books from regions we enjoy outside that premise.

message 165: by Anna (new)

Anna (aetm) | 228 comments Dave, I can't see that group either, but why not use
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/4... for it? Mysteries and thrillers covers all sort of crime (or if you want, I can add the generic crime + noir to the description).

Its down on the bottom of the page. No need to fix, it already is.

message 167: by Caise (new)

Caise i've just finished reading 'The Batman' by Jo Nesbo. Actually through the first half of that book I've been thinking it's a little boring but now I can tell with a clear conscience it's one of the best books I've read so far. Now it's time for The Cockroaches by Jo Nesbo.

message 168: by Sharon, Moderator (Netherlands) (new)

Sharon | 2524 comments Mod
Are you reading in Norweigan or did you track down the English of the two? I have not been successful, so any tips are appreciated. Love JN books.

message 169: by Caise (new)

Caise I'm reading in Polish. I've heard The Batman is coming out in English next year.

message 170: by Sharon, Moderator (Netherlands) (new)

Sharon | 2524 comments Mod
Will look out for that as I would like to meet a younger, less damaged Harry Hole... Thanks. I prefer to read an author, especially a character, start to finish.

message 171: by Caise (new)

Caise Same here. This is the first book I've read that was written by Jo Nesbo. I'm looking forward to reading all of them.

You will really enjoy them but best in order as they really follow each other nicely....

JO NESBO

Harry Hole books:
THE BATMAN. 1997
THE COCKROACHES 1998.  (both not trans into English)

The Redbreast. 2000/6
The Devil’s Star. 2003/5
Nemesis. 2002/8
The Redeemer. 2005/9
The Snowman 2007/10
The Leopard  2009/11
Phantom 2012/

The White Hotel 2007
Headhunters. 2008

Children's books...

message 173: by Steve (new)

Steve (sjbsf) | 0 comments I just finished Nesbo's Headhunters and thoroughly enjoyed it. Frankly thought it was among the best two I have read by him (Snowman being the other). Found a non-Harry Hole story refreshing after 6 in a row with Hole as the lead character.

message 175: by Art (last edited Oct 05, 2011 01:04PM) (new)

Art | 48 comments My list is off the charts as well, and all my inter-library loan books that normally take time came in at once, so the stack at home is taller than me when I sit at the desk, I gotta get reading...I just finished The Man who went up in Smoke in the Martin Beck series last night, now I have to finish the new Deon Meyer's book, Trackers, and then I will be reading my next Swedish crime novel in the stack, Sun Storm by Asa Larson.

That's the other group "Nordic Noir" that's reading Mercy. Easy enough to get confused though, I post in both groups as well :)

I've already started ;)
I haven't read the Snow Angels, I have to find it somewhere first. Well, I have really enjoyed the book so far and i have a ton of questions for James :D

message 183: by Art (new)

Art | 48 comments Everyone's comments on Lucifer's Tears has made me bump Snow Angels to the top of my "To Read" list (Yeah I'm one of those guys that has to read #1 before #2.)I just have to work through that giant stack of library books first, but I'm looking forward to reading these books.

After many years enjoying Wallander, I have returned to catch up the early books I missed. Having just finished the final goodbye to Wallander this summer am now back to the beginning.
Just read Wallander 1 and now into #2, The Dogs of Riga and what a great read...but I also read it as an European knowing sadly full well how realistic the story actually is and indeed the politics then and now!!

Well I read Jussi Adler-Olsen's book, "The Keeper of Lost Causes", and it was a real thriller. Had just enough comedy with it to keep you interested. I worked with Muslims and I know all about how they prey and don't eat during Ramadan. They really show you what faith is though the actions. Will look forward to more books from Jussi.

message 194: by James (new)

James Thompson (jamesthompson) | 310 comments I made a PDF of the book and sent it to Ian because he lives in the UK, can't order from the U.S., and so was unable to participate in the discussion. If anyone else is lives in a sales region that doesn't allow U.S. ordering, let me know and I'll send a copy gratis. It will eventually appear in 20 something countries, but as far as I know, has only been released in the U.S., France, and Finland. Most other countries will release it in November.

Which book James? Just curious.
I am in Holland and can order anything with my Amazon account from any Amazon except the Kindle books and they all have to be ordered from Amazon.com. Find Amazon Germany (English books) quicker than UK, for NL.
Mind you ordered paper Lucifer's Tears and still waiting. Enjoying Mercy though while I wait. Will stick to Kindle after LT, it is on my Kindle on all machines in the house in seconds! What a world.....

to James....wonderful new web site.....excellent. posted on FB .

message 197: by James (new)

James Thompson (jamesthompson) | 310 comments It's complicated. I don't have a Dutch deal, but when I do, amazon UK or US won't ship my books there anymore. Books are sold to publishers by language and/or region rights. My UK publisher, for instance, owns certain English language territories, my U.S. publisher others, and never the twain shall meet. They can't ship into each other's regions. While my German publisher has world rights in German and may ship in German to anywhere they choose. I would assume they ship to stores in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. My UK publisher has the right to ship to Iraq. I doubt they do so, but it's their territory.

Quite a learning cure all this!

James Thompson (jamesthompson) | 310 comments Cool! I'm glad you were able to sneak in and get it through the back door, so to speak. My U.S. publisher would be most unhappy about this. They would view it as Rowahlt basically reaching into their pockets. And yeah, it's a big learning curve for me too.
