Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Currently reading one library book and one I got as a giveaway on here. I have 7 more library books for me and a few for the kiddo and then its onto the strange land of only reading what I own.

*takes a breath and tries not to think of all the books I could be missing at the library that are on my tbr. Some of the books I own and haven't read I've had for over ten years O_o*

The only new books I'm likely to be getting for a while will be if I win Giveaways, get an offer from an author for review and the Stephen King books that are always given to me for my birthday :) So on that front I have no choice but to be good.

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments So. I've caved. Using random number generation, I've created this list which represents 10% of my to-read and tbr-priority lists. I will somehow work these into my monthly lists and read or, in some cases, remove these books within the next year. I make no commitments regarding adding to my tbr lists and I will continue working on my tbr-priority, making room for group reads, and above all, sticking to the whole making sure I read these over the next five years as planned.

*waves plate of homemade bread and jam under Grant's nose*

You know you want to...

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That's pretty impressive, Denae.

message 56: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments You have no fantasy on that first list except Nightside?

message 57: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Way to go, Denae!!!

message 58: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments RNG will do that. I have more fantasy on my tbr-priority list, not to mention my overall to-read list.

Which part is impressive, Danielle? I'm just trying to get MrsJ & Tracey off my back. *looks around carefully before whispering* They can be scary.

message 59: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Now I just need to figure out a way to stick to it all. I really need to get a better system in place and stop trying to read so much every month that's BoTMs but not on my tbr.

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

BotMs are murder.

I've pretty much stopped reading them...

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That you scientifically analyzed your tbr pile. I'm just giving vague quotas to meet, and a lot of wiggle room. Yes, I'm afraid that MrsJ will break out the ruler soon!

Ala, I can't keep up with the BOTMs. I try to read them if I can.

message 62: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Yeah, there are a couple of groups I may leave largely because I don't participate in the conversations much and all they do is make me feel bad for not reading BoTMs. It's fun to be able to discover new books that way, but it's not like I don't have tons of stuff to read already or other ways to find new books.

message 63: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I read what i feel like reading, i have never read a book just because it's botm.

message 64: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I'm not even trying to do anything about my TBR size... My personal challenge is all about reading books I already own. I know there aren't that many compared to other people (I own around sixty books that I haven't read yet), but I want the number to be less. That's why I'm doing the buy one new for every three I read that I already own. I figure the list has got to get smaller that way! I am in the red though... So that just shows you how much I suck. LOL. Only six in the red though! It could be worse!

I'm not even going to try to tackle my actual TBR. I don't want to restrict myself from adding things! There are only like 300 on it... That's not so bad.

message 65: by Mach (last edited Jul 28, 2011 09:13AM) (new)

Mach | 572 comments I think what you are doing wrong is adding every book that looks interesting to the tbr list, if you are not one hundred percent sure you will read the book in the foreseeable future, DON'T add it to your list. It works for me and i have 40 books on my tbr and i won't add another one until i have read atleast 10 of the books already on the list.

message 66: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I don't feel compelled to read a book I think I will dislike because it's BoTM, but they still manage to be distractions because I'll read things I would otherwise be on the fence about.

message 67: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited Jul 28, 2011 09:16AM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I add books that I want to read to my tbr pile as I see them, so I don't forget that I was interested. If it turns out it's not my thing (via reviews or change in interest level), I remove them from the list.

My challenge is based on my owned books total.

message 68: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) I don't think there's a "wrong" way to do TBR lists. Everyone has a different method that's tailored for their own habits and preferences.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Denae wrote: "I don't feel compelled to read a book I think I will dislike because it's BoTM..."

I do.

A lot.

Especially the way nominations and votes have been going recently(not this group). A lot of the books that end up BotM just don't interest me at all.

And then it becomes painful to try and slog through them.

message 70: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments I'm the same with adding them if I feel any interest at all. Otherwise, there is no way I will keep track of everything. It works out for me. Just this week I found an absolute gem that I would probably have forgotten existed had I not had it on my list. I don't think I am doing anything wrong.

As I said, I make no promises about adding to the list. The reason I decided to do anything with this challenge is that I knew it could push me to read things I might not read otherwise. The random generation works really well for me. It's how I pulled out which books I am going to read next on the 1001 books to read before you die list, and it's how I pulled out the 46 I added to this list. Having a push towards variety helps me to not get stuck in ruts.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I have three to-read lists: owned-to-read, to-read and may-read. I'm guessing they're fairly self explanatory.

Like Lady Danielle, I add books that look interesting when I see them, otherwise I forget about them. If I go back a month or so later and can't remember why I added it, I might delete it.

I've had some books go from may-read to "omg, I must read this right now" - my reading desires shift with my moods and sometimes I go through phases of reading nothing by x subgenre, and then get burned out on it. Things change...

Anyway - I skip most BotMs but I will read a book that I'm on the fence about if it comes up for one. Sort of like Hounded, which I don't think I'd read on my own though I'm curious enough to possibly read it with the group.

But, anyway, I only have 12 books on my owned-to-read list, so I shan't be joining the challenge. ;)

I feel you, hun. I may be minimizing the extent of my compulsion, but I am trying to turn over a new leaf.

By the way, I won't be reading The Terror anytime soon. *mourns reddit group*

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

I won't be reading it anytime soon either. But what the hell, not like anyone is even there anymore.

*sets snoo on the pyre, lights it*

message 74: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments I also never add more then one book per author, if it's an author i have never read before, i add the most famous/best liked book he/she has and add it. If i happen to like the first book i then add another one and soforth.

message 75: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) Ala wrote: "I do.

I used to do those like you're doing. And yeah, I burned out on them. I did read some good stuff I might not have otherwise, but found I didn't have time to read what I wanted. So now I'm much more reserved about jumping in.

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

You've got all kinds of rules for your TBR list, Mach :P

Me? I'm like Lady D and Colleen. If it looks interesting at some point, I'll toss it onto the list. Down the line, if I can't remember why I added it, I'll delete it.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) One thing I'm trying to be better about is to stop letting people convince me to read something I'd already considered and passed over. More often then not I end up regretting it.

I will say, though, that I don't add every book of a series to my list like I've seen some people do. I'll add the first in the series, if it's new, or the next one for me, if it's one I follow. Also, since I use the to-read lists mostly to keep track of things I'm likely to forget, I don't always add things that I know I'm going to be getting to in short order - those go straight to my amazon wishlist. (I have started adding more of those, though, since I've started using the bookswap wishlist ability.)

message 78: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) I add them to my TBR if Dawn tells me to.

Same for me, for the most part.

This is me too. A lot of the books on my list I probably will not read. I keep going through the books and try to take off ones that I won't read. I wish it was easier to add books directly to my to-read-interesting shelf, which I've made exclusive, but it takes at least 2 or three extra screens to add it to that, so I generally add new finds to my to-read list and then batch edit them to my other shelf.

message 85: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) And yeah, I don't think there's a wrong way... My list isn't out of control. If it looks interesting, I add it. If eventually I decide I won't read it, I remove it. Easy enough.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) This is one way in which my persnicketiness comes in useful. Not nearly as many books look interesting to me as they do to others. ;)

message 87: by Mach (new)

Mach | 572 comments Colleen, you dislike pretty much every book i like:)

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

She dislikes pretty much everything anyone else likes.

:P

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) What can I say? A girl's got to have standards. *snerk*

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Ala wrote: "She dislikes pretty much everything anyone else likes.

I was going to come back and edit my original snarky response with something like "You'd be surprised at how many people say that to me... or, then again, maybe not".

But I see Ala's beat me to it.

And he wonders why I hate love him so.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Hey, hey, hey! I never said anything about not adding stuff to the TBR, just knocking some stuff off. :-)

I hate the fact that I have a million books on my TBR - a lot which look interesting - but I never get to them because I'm reading this or that or I forgot about them and they're buried in the middle of my massive list. Prior to GR I never had a list this big, it was 10-15 tops!

What's worse is that I now have this urgency to buy now! instead of waiting until I'm about to read it. I have 125 books that I own and haven't read. 125! I've never ever done that before, either.

I've bought so many ebooks lately that half the time I don't even bother to download them. I just catalog them on my TBR-owned list and keep moving.

I'm doomed

message 93: by [deleted user] (new)

So if I join this challenge and then delete all the books off of my TBR list, do I win?

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I have 9 in my currently reading, 125 in my TBR-owned, 224 in my TBR, 23 in the GR first look contests (I manage this list often, removing books if I don't win and they aren't that interesting), and 8 more in my "DNF - will try again list).

Thats more than enough for me (it's too much).

This is one thing I can't do - the whole reading multiple books at the same time thing. I've tried once or twice, but the only time I can really do it if one's a short story volume or something.
