J.C. (jcjoranco) | 7 comments Halfway to Nowhere by Jason Henderson
Halfway To Nowhere

a Literary Fiction story, set in contemporary San Francisco.

here's the synopsis:

"Alex Smith is an ordinary joe lost in an ordinary world, a cruel and dreary place where nothing turns out as planned. He works the night shift at a dead end job that barely pays the bills, his sleazy landlord swindles any money that's left over, his apartment only a tiny box with roaches for company. His absent father suddenly walks back into his life asking for redemption, his friends gone or unavailable. What makes matters worse is that Alex is taunted by recurring dreams where he wakes to an empty world, where there is no one left around but him, nothing but empty streets and an empty city. Put simply, his life is a boat without oars in a sea of shallow water, and all he wishes for is some inkling to life purpose, a direction to happiness and self worth.

When Lexi, a recently impregnated prostitute crosses his path, he invites her to stay with him for a time until she can get her own life together. This small act of kindness will send him down a bizarre spiral of events that will change his life in a way he never could have predicted, and into a shape that could only come from life itself."

Damon Marbut (damonferrellmarbut) | 15 comments Awake in the Mad World by Damon Ferrell Marbut

The following is the back cover description on the soon-to-be-released-through-Amazon (late June/early July) print version of my novel, Awake in the Mad World, followed by a discussion of theme in parentheses. It is already available in the Apple ibookstore, on Kobo, and any minute now, Nook. Kindle will come a few weeks after print.

“I hadn’t thought of it, in real truth. I hadn’t thought about love because when I was at work, I didn’t think, I am at work. I hadn’t thought, when I was at the grocery store, I am at the store. We just are where we are. We’re in what we’re in.

Pete Rattigan is a frustrated young newspaper journalist caught up in uncertainty of the post-graduate “real world. One night, one seemingly minor encounter sparks a philosophical journey which leads him to discover that in the most beautiful or even cruel moments of life, the power of friendship explains the power of the universe. And that perhaps there is no such thing as chance. With force, humor and sensitivity Damon Ferrell Marbut presents his debut, Awake in the Mad World, which frees its audience to believe again in the wildness of the young American heart, how it beats just to prove that it will always survive and succeed on its own terms.

(((Elements of my novel Awake in the Mad World are, inarguably, “coming of age, identity and self-discovery. But also, it’s about place, and asks, Where do the dreamers fit in? Where, in the modern American conversation that’s been changed by technology and is continuing to be changed by the political landscape? How we communicate and what we’re communicating about is managing some sort of odd relevance and mindlessness simultaneously. Is the importance of one’s search for Self in this country being put on the backburner as greed and survival take precedent? Though the novel’s characters representing this search are post-graduates in their mid-twenties, the disillusioned and disenfranchised in our culture are of all demographics, ages, income ranges, genders and ethnicities. My novel is about human relationships, also, and how the growth and purity of our ambitions are shaped and altered by the friends and family we include on our path to wholeness.

As this is a literary non-genre novel, after three years I decided to publish this book myself, recognizing fully the struggle I would continue to face while attempting to sell the risk of a debut novelist to an agent, editor or publisher already anxious about the changing publishing industry. I do hope my novel is a memorable read for you, and thank you in advance for reading it. I look forward to your ratings and reviews.)))

GRAVEYARD ASSASSINS :: Robert Reid

On the day Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated JFK in Dallas, illusionist Keane Crowley was preparing for a performance destined to change the course of his burgeoning career. And then, suddenly, he was dead, too.

More than thirty years later, teenager Casper Cole learns the truth about Keane Crowley’s mysterious life and death when he is taught the secret art of shuffling: the ability to use a deck of playing cards to time-travel. During his time-traveling expeditions to the past—which include face-to-face encounters with both Abraham Lincoln and Lee Harvey Oswald, as well as a harrowing escape from the battle of Gettysburg—Casper comes to realize that it was Crowley’s death, and not Kennedy’s, that changed the course of human history on November 22, 1963.

Reporter Finn Avery, meanwhile, stumbles upon Crowley’s story while working for a ragtag community newspaper, and, in her quest to learn more about him, finds herself confronting bludgeoned bodies, unmarked mass graves, and an enigmatic man who claims to be Crowley himself—alive and seemingly immortal some thirty-four years after his alleged death.

Zigzagging through more than one hundred years of American history, GRAVEYARD ASSASSINS challenges the notion of what it means to be alive when humanity’s every recorded memory can be revisited in the space between two playing cards.

Dan Raymo (dan_raymo) | 1 comments Chattanooga a novel by Chet Raymo

Prologue:
Summers in Chattanooga tend to be taxing once the oppressive heat and humidity make their way over Lookout Mountain and settle into the valley, but nothing could quite prepare us for the monumental life-changing madness the summer of '44 would heap upon us. Until that time, as far as anyone was concerned, we were just an ordinary family, living an ordinary life, in an ordinary house. Now we've become famous, or more accurately infamous, and newspapers quote neighbors as saying things like, “They were a nice quiet family, always seemed perfectly normal. I suppose we were normal, or at least seemed normal, until fate, the war, a missing boy, and a dime store canary conspired to expose us for what we really are a bunch of raving loons.

But when a fire demon is released into her oasis, destroying her home and decimating her tribe, Mahalia’s sheltered world is turned upside-down. Her people have always been different, worshiping other gods and practicing arcane magics now, they are blamed for the disaster, and mysterious robed prophets appear from the deep desert, naming the tribe as demon-born, cursed by Heaven itself. As a strange illness begins to claim members of the tribe, Mahalia steps up to become ailahafeeza, protector of her family and perhaps the only person who can save them from an enemy who has lain in wait for centuries

Freya 800 AD. Freya lived more than a thousand years ago at the beginning of the Viking raids on Britain.
Home was a longhouse, one of several in the settlement; a stockade protected the small community from bears and wolves roaming the vast glacial wilderness.
Freya's husband, Olaf, hungered for wealth. He sailed the longship, Odin's Thunder, across the Norse Sea to wreak havoc on the Picts of northern Britain. Freya, haunted by images of her husband's rapine and cruel infidelity, prays to pagan gods for his return.
With the settlement almost deserted, Knut, a man of the mountains with a warped and cruel mind, crossed the threshold of Freya's longhouse with devastating consequences.
In a dreadful twist of fate, Freya is forced to live in isolation. It takes all her willpower to survive a dark and frozen winter with only Brock, her favourite hound for company.
When Olaf had been missing for two winter seasons, Freya sailed to the shores of Britain to find him. Betrayal and tragedy lie ahead.
