Sadly, the custom which I learned about from reading this book is not a positive one. I learned about , which is an extreme form of FGM (female genital mutilation) as practiced in some East African countries. It is partly to speak out against this custom, which she endured as a child, that Waris Dirie wrote this book. But, hers is a very interesting life story, and there's much more to it than just having been a victim of FGM!

Regarding A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar, 194 of the 203 pages of the historical storyline take place in the Kashgar region, which is the current Xinjiang Autonomous region of China. I was going by the Library of Congress cataloging which has a subject matter of Kashi(China)-Fiction (as well as a genre of Historical Fiction). Does that work? Thanks for your hard work on this challenge - it's a lot of fun!
@Cheryl - sounds good. This book has been on my radar as well and something that I read made it sound like it was on the route of the silk road through some of the "stans".
