But one thing I did pay attention to was to never be with a man who couldn’t make you laugh every day. Laugher was the key to a good relationship. Beauty dies, sex becomes dull, but laughter can last a millennium.

“She remembered when Will had died, her agony, the long nights alone, reaching across the bed every morning when she woke up, for eighty years expecting to find him there, and only slowly growing accustomed to the fact that that side of the bed would always be empty. The moments when she had found something funny and turned to share the joke with him, only to be shocked anew that he was not there. The worst moments, when, sitting alone at breakfast, she had realized that she had forgotten the precise blue of his eyes or the depth of his laugh; that like the sound of Jem's violin, they had faded into the distance where memories are silent.”

“You point your feet out too much when you walk, Will went on. He was busy polishing an apple on his shirtfront, and appeared not to notice Tessa glaring at him. “Camille walks delicately. Like a faun in the woods. Not like a duck.
“I do not walk like a duck.
“I like ducks, Jem observed diplomatically. “Especially the ones in Hyde Park. He glanced sideways at Will; both boys were sitting on the edge of the high table, their legs dangling over the side. “Remember when you tried to convince me to feed poultry pie to the mallards in the park to see if you could breed a race of cannibal ducks?
“They ate it too, Will reminisced. “Bloodthirsty little beasts. Never trust a duck.”

“She'd laughed, and if he could have bottled the sound and gotten drunk on it every night, he would have. It terrified him.”
