"Finished the 2nd book around Jan. 2018. Once I got back into it I really liked it. Magic was used a bit differently and there popped in a couple small bits where you could tell it was in the same world as the first book, but still far away. Again, it's obvious to tell this is more early work by the general flatness of the characters but the plot is good old fantasy that I love." — May 06, 2018 02:46PM

“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.”

“It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.”

“Books can also provoke emotions. And emotions sometimes are even more troublesome than ideas. Emotions have led people to do all sorts of things they later regret-like, oh, throwing a book at someone else.”

“Books may not change our suffering, books may not protect us from evil, books may not tell us what is good or what is beautiful, and they will certainly not shield us from the common fate of the grave. But books grant us myriad possibilities: the possibility of change, the possibility of illumination.”

“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.”
