Loving this

What a delightful long read I have ahead of me! I think I’ll read and listen to this a while and then fit in a few other things before coming back to this. I’m not likely to forget these folks! 😊

Yes - listening to the audio at the moment and liking it very much so far. Glad I set the previous book aside for now.

I'm disappointed. It opens with a grisly scene, lingers over upchucking, introduces a dog and dog-poo 'humour', and has a long scene with Brigit getting herself disgustingly wasted. I'm 20% through and bored. Maybe later.

It's my fault for putting it in the company of the other books I'm reading now: the Booker-winning "Offshore" by Penelope Fitzgerald and the unforgettable stories in Alistair MacLeod's "Island".

These are equally excellent so far. I dare not read them all at once - I like letting them sink in a bit.

I don't know how it has happened that in the last few weeks I've read books about Japanese atrocities in WWII. It certainly wasn't intended.

Not sure about this one yet, but then I've got a long way to go.

He has covered amazing histories, personal and societal.

I have been waiting for the audio at the library before starting this so I could hear Flanagan read his own words. He has a distinctive manner of speech which resonates with me. He's quietly intelligent and softly spoken, but he's always been outspoken about his passionate beliefs, and I love his work.

I've barely cracked it open, but I like the setup so far. I think Nora Breen may have legs as a canny observer who becomes some kind of sleuth. I'm wondering if Kidd will include some of her magical realism.

I don't need to know about MORE books - but I can't resist seeing what's coming.
