It's readable, but in the back of my mind all I can think about are the problematic things the author said. There are characters of color and characters with mental health diagnoses in this book, which I would normally appreciate, but having heard that the author said his Native character was a "throwaway" and that he thinks autistic children are "a burden" definitely affects my reading.

I was genuinely interested in the first 20 chapters. Chapters 21-25 were kind of boring and I don't like the direction the story is taking. I wouldn't be able to finish this without the audiobook.
Fans of Lord of the Flies would like this, but I hated that book.
The constant insistence that Pete (he's diagnosed with autism) is a burden is problematic.

This is one of the most conflicting reading experiences I've had. I'm upset with the author and should have never opened the book. I should have just unhauled it. I regret not doing that. The story is well-written and interesting. Edilio, who is Honduran, is berated frequently, but it's written coming from racist characters. The problematic things about the author appear to happen outside of the novel, so far.

I feel conflicted even picking this up, even though I bought it 3 years before Grant made problematic comments. I'm giving it a chance since 2 readers I trust really liked it. Whether I like it or not, I won't read any more of his works after this, on principle.
