Ken What, no Pevear and Volokhonsky translation? I thought they were all the Russian rage these days.

Kris I had tried their translation a few years ago and it fell flat for me. This one feels better -- the style seems more natural. Not sure if it's the translation or simply that I am in a better frame of mind to read the novel. I had been trying to read it around Christmas before -- not so festive!

Ken No. Tolstoy works better for Christmas. The Mummers' Scene in War & Peace particularly.

Kris Excellent point -- that's a great scene. Makes a change from Dickens.
