Love how *now* it seems in its concerns, whilst also being absolutely devoid of current buzzwords and overt commentary hinting towards them (because it was written in 1944 and translated in 2007). And I like the narrator so much.

Would never have thought that shops would be open on Christmas Day in 1940s Spain. But then that was not the most important day of the season.
