I decided to change genre because the last book I read was too intense and I wanted to savor it a bit longer in my mind. Liking this so far.

new_user Uh oh, did you say you wanted less intense? LOL! xD

Fani *loves angst* Oh dear, I DID want a light one, but it seems I picked the wrong book judging by your comment:)
Well, never mind, I really like this so far, more than I expected. I have this marked as a recommendation from you new user, so thanks!

new_user Np, you're in for some good stuff. She's one of my faves.

Fani *loves angst* It's absolutely great! I'm in the point where the brothers turned to swans and I can't wait to see what happens next! I didn't sleep a lot the weekend because my son was sick, and tired that I am, I can't convince myself to put the book away and sleep early:) I've seem to caught the 'one more chapter' virus, lol!

new_user LOL! Best virus ever. There's no end to that in this book. I was clutching the pages the whole time thinking, "Oh, I hope she succeeds, oh no..." Delicious suspense.

Adrienne I loved this a can only endorse NUs glowing comments:) I now have the second book to read.

Fani *loves angst* I've loved the original fairytale to begin with; it's one of my favorites along with Beauty and the Beast. I'm so glad this book is so close to the original but also so unique and captivating:) Thanks NU for bringing it to my attention!

Adrienne, is the second book based on a fairytale too?

Adrienne Not too sure NU may be able to answer that one:)

new_user No, you'll notice she rooted her retelling in history and a lot of background with Sevenwaters, etc. Because of that she's able to ground the next stories in Sevenwaters too, but they have different heroines. I don't want to give anything away, but I liked the second book even better. ;)

Fani *loves angst* Thanks new_user! Depending on how this one ends, I might have to add the second in my TBR as well:) I'm in a mood for fairytales right now and I'd like to explore a few more books in that genre. Any suggestions are welcome!

new_user LOL. Sorry, before I started babbling I meant to say they're not fairy tale retellings, but very good all the same! :D

Fani *loves angst* Ok, thanks NU:) They're close enough to what I'm looking for anyway, but Beauty by McKinley is right now on top of my to-buy list. Have you read that one perhaps?

new_user I haven't. I read The Blue Sword way back when by McKinley and really enjoyed that one, but I haven't gotten a chance to read Beauty.

Laura Lulu Jumping in your convo. :)

Loved these books, and I agree NU, I liked the second one even more than the 1st. I think it was the 4th that I wasn't super crazy about (red head on the cover) but it was still good.

But I jumped in for the fairy tale retellings part--have you ever read any of the East of the Sun & West of the Moon retellings? There are 3 that I'm aware of, I've read the 1st 2 and really enjoyed them--

East by Edith Pattou Ice by Sarah Beth Durst Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George

I liked McKinley's Beauty, and Shannon Hale's Book of a Thousand Days was really good too.

s

new_user Yeah, I agree, the fourth one wasn't her best, but still good. I have those on TBR, hehe.

Fani *loves angst* Thank you both nu and Laura Lulu! I have both marked Beauty and Book of a Thousand Days as 'to-buy'; it's good to have the 'ok' from someone who read them:)
I'll check out East, it sounds quite interesting to me. I wasn't aware of these books. Thanks for the recommendations!

PS: You've both convinced me on going for the second in these series:)

new_user Yay! Can't wait to see what you think of it!

I already ordered it NU! It should be here soon:) I also ordered Beauty and East. I hope the mood continues and these don't end up in my TBR for ever.

So far though, I'm loving DotF. She's just met Red and it's so interesting:)

new_user Oooooh, you just got to the good part, yay! Hehehe.

Fani *loves angst* I think so too! I love his protectiveness even though she's one of the enemies and her taking care of his wound and slowly starting to trust him. I can see this only getting better from here on:)

new_user Yeah, so protective and so determined. He wouldn't let her out of his sight for a second so he could wring the truth from her. I love when they first meet at the campfire. You can immediately tell he's strong. :D

Fani *loves angst* Ok, I've only spent 4 hours sleeping last night to finish this. I'm absoluted awed:) Thanks for the suggestion NU! Now I can't wait to read the second!

new_user Whoo! I'm glad you like it! I like to share the Marillier love. More people should appreciate her! LOL. I was awed by her too. Many a sleepless night with her books, LOL. Second book rocks!

Fani *loves angst* I hope it gets here before the easter vacation nu, so I can read it during the holidays! I can't tell how much I loved this book:) I was crying out near the end, wanting so much to see them together. Initially I thought Simon would be the hero and I was sorry for him, that he carried a love for her for so long to find her finally in love with someone else. But all's well that ends well I guess, and Red was a great hero; strong enough that Sorcha could lean on him and not the other way round.

new_user Yes, she is not afraid to rake those characters over the coals, let me tell you! LOL. Her books are always intense. I'm always moved when I read them. I felt bad for Simon too. And Sorcha, poor girl, she went through so much. I really appreciate her kind of strength. It's a little different from the brand of strength that we usually associate with heroines, "I'm going to go kick that villain's bum!" I think Sorcha's is more impressive for being the more powerless and determined. She's shining.

message 26: by Fani *loves angst* (last edited Mar 19, 2010 12:24AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Fani *loves angst* I liked Sorcha too, for she did have self-doubts whether she could do it, or if she chose the right path; it was more realistic that way. She was not unwavering and so self-assured that she seemed cocky in the end. I hate those heroines myself, the "I know what I'm doing and everyone stand back or else" kind.

new_user LOL, I hear you.
