This book is so sad at times :( Granted, it's a beautiful kind of sadness, but still, Chapter 23...

It's amazing how this book can take something horrific and turn it into something beautiful...it's almost like watching Disney adapt a Stephen King book! (My apologies to those of you who can't stop thinking what Disney's animated Pet Sematary would be like now!)

Ivan sighed heavily and put down his glass. "This is stupid, Marya. I am hungry. Let a man eat in peace." - Anyone who's read this magical book knows why I just laughed so hard at that moment!

"I am Marya Morevna, daughter of twelve mothers, and I will not be denied!" Wow...I just had Alexandra Udinov flashbacks...

"Marya no longer thought it grisly or shuddered as she passed beneath the empty eye sockets. Now, the skulls seemed to smile at her, to say, We who were once living can guard you still, and love you, and keep you safe and whole. Nothing ever truly dies. - I still can't decide if that's creepy or sweet... :P

The specific fantasy elements may be different, but thematically, this book reminds me of the film "Pan's Labyrinth"...and if you haven't seen the movie, trust me, that's a compliment! "Pan's Labyrinth" is absolutely sublime! :D
