Lady Oonagh is nastier than Snow White's stepmom. Poor Sorcha! I can't seem to put this book down and I am not even noticing how much time I have spent reading.

This is one of the best books I've read - Juliet Marillier, you know how to tell a great story.

"..for I see you before me every moment. I see you in the light on the water, in the swaying of the young trees in the spring wind. I see you in the shadows of the great oaks. I hear your voice in the cry of the owl at night. You are the blood in my veins, and the beating of my heart. You are my first waking thought, and my last sigh before sleeping. You are bone of my bone, and breath of my breath." *sigh*

"I sat on the sand and held the first one, then another in my hand, marveling at these tiny convoluted homes that had each sheltered some small creature of the sea. For I was the daughter of the forest, and for all my growing years had not ventured far from its enveloping arms, had not imagined the wonder, the strangeness of the ocean and its secret life." "Weep, dear one. Our love wraps you like a blanket. Our strength is yours, and yours keeps our hope alive." --It feels like each update I am saying Poor Sorcha! I need to get some Kleenex.

I keep picturing Snow White's stepmom as the Lady Oonagh. Nasty lady...

"Sitting under the rowans, listening to the small sounds of bird and insect about their daily business, I wept for my father, and for my brothers, and for myself."

This is such a beautiful story. I love how the historical works with the fantasy.

new_user Oh, I am so with you on that one. Oonagh is such a b!tch! LOL.

Catherine Definitely the sign of a good book! Bad for housework though. :)

AH The kids just destroy any cleaning efforts anyway. :)

Besides, there is lots of snow to shovel.

message 4: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Kids are horrible for a clean house. I envy those who can somehow magically keep their house spotless. I'd have no life outside work and cleaning and cooking if I did that!

AH If you wash the floor, they spill 30 seconds later. If you clean the bathrooms, they miss and mess up. If you vacuum, they spread confetti like dirt everywhere. I can't win, so I hand them the wipes and tell them to clean their dirty fingerprints off of everything. And my kids are old enough to clean stuff.

Catherine Mine aren't. :( My 3 year old has been trying to clean his room since Monday. I am determined that he'll do it himself!

He emptied every single toy he owns onto the floor and then pushed them all in front of the door and barricaded himself and his baby brother in the room. I literally could not get in and it took death threats at the door while he sloooooowly moved the toys to be able to get in.

AH You know what makes them clean up really fast? The old garbage bag trick. You tell them that since they don't take care of their toys, you will fill up that garbage bag full of toys and take it to someone who doesn't have any toys. If you do it a few times, they either have a really clean room or a really empty room.

Vered I just tell myself - only 20 more years (give or take), and then I'll have a clean tidy house...

LOL! That's a great idea!

AH I used to hold the garbage bag full of toys hostage for a while and they could earn each toy back one at a time, but if the bag stayed in the garage too long, they obviously didn't miss the toy.

message 11: by Catherine (new)

Catherine How old were they? Do you think the 3 year old would get the picture? Also, how long did it take for them to earn each one?

message 12: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH You'd be surprised how much a 3 year old understands. Make them responsible for their stuff, they appreciate it more. Most 3 year olds are capable of putting stuff away - just have a lot of bins and baskets for like toys. Set aside a time of day when they will have room inspection and then if it passes your standards then give back a toy. It takes a few weeks to get this right so stick to it. 21 days to make it a habit. Who knows you might get rid of some of the stuff they weren't playing with anyway. Most kids have way too many toys.

Catherine I agree that kids have too many toys. I've limited the amount that mine have, but the little pieces of some of them (like Legos or blocks) can make a giant mess when dumped out.

When I said he barricaded the door I forgot to mention that it was the comforter and pillows and chair and stuffed animals added to the pile that made it so hard to open.

That's a great idea though. I think I'm going to try it out.
