Similar to Atwood's "Handmaid" except that the people here are cloned instead of coming from mothers' uterus. The people are also color-coded: alpha (gray), delta (khaki), epsilon (black), etc.

Genia Lukin It's really quite different.

With these Dystopian books, you need to know exactly what system they're going after for social criticism in order to get the direction the book is going and distinguish it from other dystopias. For instance, the fact that in huxley's world people are cloned and in Atwood's they aren't is a major difference that has to do with what each is criticizing or exaggerating.

In the case of Atwood it's obviously religious fundamentalism and the Revival movement in America, whereas in Huxley it's diehard laissez-faire capitalism.

K.D. Absolutely Good point, Genia. I will bear that in mind. I am not really a fan of dystopian novels so that will really help. I have a feeling though that if I read many books in this genre I might end up as a fan because I kinda like it.

Monique I look forward to your review of this, Kuya Doni. I'm curious as to why it is a banned book ~ or why people are attempting to have it banned.

K.D. Absolutely Thanks for reminding me, Monique. Bea, Angus and I will just read this for 4 days. 3 chapters/day so I will have my review on Monday. Hmmm, I'd like to know the answer to that too!

Genia Lukin The answer is because people didn't take kindly to Huxley's portrayal of aforementioned laissez-faire capitalism. America under McCarthy did not necessarily want to know that its factory employment morals were being scathingly deconstructed by some Brit intellectual.

That not to even mention that, when written, in 1932, babies born in incubators, groups sex and drugs weren't exactly topics one commented upon. Wikipedia quotes:

Brave New World has been banned and challenged at various times. In 1932, the book was banned in Ireland for its language, and for supposedly being anti-family and anti-religion.[14][15] The American Library Association ranks Brave New World as #52 on their list of most challenged books.[16] In 1980, it was removed from classrooms in Miller, Missouri among other challenges.[17] In 1993, an unsuccessful attempt was made to remove the novel from a California school's required reading list because it "centered around negative activity".[18]

Hope that answers some of that.

K.D. Absolutely Thanks, Genia. Nice for you to answer the question. One less puzzle to think about :)

Yes, even in Chapter 3, where I stopped reading this morning, I remember that the young people don't know what is the concept of the family.

Genia Lukin Oh, oops. Sorry if I deprived you of an issue to ponder. It seemed like you wanted an answer, but I guess I might've been overeager in providing one.

K.D. Absolutely It's okay Genia. I usually don't mind spoilers. There were novels I read and still enjoyed even if I had already seen their movie adaptations. That way, I will not have a hard time imagining the scenes while reading :)

message 9: by Regine (new)

Regine I agree with you Genia. And really, Huxley wasn't that far off-base with his portrayal of the future. The reason people want this book banned so badly is because it's true!

K.D. Absolutely Oh this seems to be a serious read! I have to pay full attention then. Thanks for the "teasers" ladies!
