Life’s imperfections used to frighten me. The pain and disappointment were too messy. So it was either all or nothing for me, with little room for any sort of gray area, where people can hurt you and still love you. Where they can disappoint you and still care deeply for you. And while we are all flawed, that’s what makes us amazing.

The hope that had been bestowed upon her the first time she heard Elvis sing was carried through her life in those ceramic figurines. And when hope was not readily within her grasp—her parents passing, her child passing, her husband passing out, night after night—she’d grab an Elvis or order one, and that hope would be completely restored.

But as I watched Mama examine every inch of the home and all its artifacts, I understood why her collection was so important to her. The link between everything had suddenly become illuminated for me, and I saw what I hadn’t seen before—not because it wasn’t obvious, but rather because I couldn’t bring myself to admit it.
