Thanks for the kind words, Rocky!
I've done some of both. With WOOL, I didn't know what I would write after the first short story. That was the entire plot. So I had to come up with the rest of the trilogy when I started part 2.
Other works, I've had more story in mind as I wrote the first part. I have the rest of THE PLAGIARIST mapped out, but I haven't had time to write it yet.

I was very surprised! I didn't do anything to promote the work. It was my 8th published title, and it just spread by word of mouth.

I think the next release will be a YA story entitled INVARIABLE. I'm working on it now.

I find it easiest to write in the morning, especially with a day job. I set my alarm, and I didn't check my email or the web for an hour or an hour and a half. In that time, I could get 1,000 - 1,500 words written.

Congrats on finishing your novella! I would start with KDP. I published a title there two weeks ago and used their cover generator. The results were better than I thought they'd be. I uploaded the Word file, and their software did the rest.

I only update my works if it's something absolutely crucial. It's good to learn to walk away and concentrate on the next work. You can cut down on this by investing more time in the initial revision process. Get a lot of eyeballs on your draft before you publish. I learned this the hard way.

It will remain a Kindle exclusive. The story takes place in the world of Kurt Vonnegut, which is only possible through the Kindle Worlds program. No matter what device you own, you should be able to read the Kindle version on it. Or check out the audiobook through iTunes.

Possibly. I'm playing around with a sequel now. And there is some great fan fiction out with more on the way.

I loved the Fallout series. I played 1 and 2 dozens of times each. Turn-based RPGs are my favorite genre of games (too few of them these days!) I never got into Fallout 3 as much as I would have liked. I hope to return to it one day.

It was entirely up to Jimmy. He ran concepts by me, but I didn't have to veto anything. We did exchange some thoughts beforehand, so the world made sense in his mind.

The biggest influence on me was probably Fraggle Rock. As a kid, I couldn't get enough of the intro to that show, which revealed an entire world underground. As for sf literature, the Foundation series introduced psychology as a driving force behind the actions of people for generation after generation, and that was a huge influence. The writing style of Herbert and Asimov rubbed off on me as well. Just not enough, I'm afraid!

Sure. If you read my blog post, that's basically what I envision. A place for book-lovers to congregate. I'm in the very beginnings of exploring the viability of such a bookstore right now. Creating a business plan; doing market research; looking at real estate; purusing industry resources.
I'm not even sure if Jupiter, FL will be where I open it up. It could be anywhere. I'm trying to figure out where the store is most needed.

I know. I need to get the book up on the site. I've been too busy for the most basic of tasks like that. I'll get on it in the next week or two!
And I keep returning to the next Molly book, and then something gets in the way. :(

Quality and consistency. I kept producing the kinds of stories that *I* wanted to read. Word of mouth did the rest.
There is a lot of luck involved in breaking out big-time. But you increase your chances by writing captivating stories and packaging them professionally. And the best advice is this: Don't stress about your sales. Just keep writing. Especially if you can write for the love of it.

I really believe this is true. Word of mouth is the bigges thing for an author, and specifically for Hugh as I (in FL) heard about his books from my boyfriend, who got a good review from his brother (in Mich). And after a couple pages, I was hooked, and its something I recommend to anyone who likes future distopia type fiction. My number one recommendation.

My excitement drives me. I used to spend all my time advocating for books. I have been an avid reader my entire life, and so I gifted books to friends and family; I worked in bookstores; I wrote reviews for various outlets; I just wanted to spread the joy of reading.
Once I wrote a novel and found out how thrilling that can be, and how easy and rewarding self-publishing can be (even before I had any monetary success), I've wanted to share that experience with others. I meet so many people who harbor a dream of writing a novel. My message is twofold: You can do it. And someone out there will want to read it.

There are three short stories that take place in the world of Wool. They are part of the Apocalypse Tryptich I'm editing with John Joseph Adams. The first part is out now. The next two should be out by the end of this year or early next year.
I may return to this world with another novel in the future, but there is so much else I want to write.

I hope you continue with the Wool/Silo series world at some point. I've never really gotten into books that have multiple parts and stories in a single universe until I started reading these and there's just something about them that really speaks to me. Thank you so much!

Hey Jackie,
Most of my stories come from current events and from the non-fiction books I'm currently reading. I get home delivery of the New York Times, and there's a potential novel on every single page.
I start with the message I want to explore, and then I build the characters and world around that message. It's okay to me if the message doesn't come across to the reader; as long as I know it's there.
