Were there any particular pieces of classic science fiction that inspired Wool, or at least the world it was set in?

The biggest influence on me was probably Fraggle Rock. As a kid, I couldn't get enough of the intro to that show, which revealed an entire world underground. As for sf literature, the Foundation series introduced psychology as a driving force behind the actions of people for generation after generation, and that was a huge influence. The writing style of Herbert and Asimov rubbed off on me as well. Just not enough, I'm afraid!

I just posted a short story on Kindle. I don't think it'll sell a ton of copies but it was important for me to do this, because I love to write and wanted to share it (plus make some money, if not a lot). I was surprised to hear that "Wool" started out as a short story on Kindle instead of a novel. How did it take off? Where you surprised? Did you promote it or did it just happen? Thank you.

Hi Hugh, One of the biggest challenges I'm finding with writing is carving out consistent chunks of writing time in my schedule, and making that schedule work for the important people in my life. I can't imagine finding the time to write and market my work the way you've done! Any advice?
