The Picture of Dorian Grey

I was a bit disappointed in this book, I kept waiting for the gothic dark scenes to happen, which didn’t really start until page 110. The beginning wasn’t too bad introducing the three main characters, but Lord Henry, with all of his long-winded dialogue and bad influence, was beginning to drive me mad.Ìý

The only character I liked was Bazil the painter of the portrait. It got interesting when the portrait began to change, but the problem I find with most of the classics they tend to meander from the plot and you have to wait through boring dialog and thoughts before you get back to the meat of the story.Ìý

The last three chapters were probably the best and the gothic horror I was waiting for finally show up. I find it weird that all Dorian did to get his age and evil deeds to transcend to his painting was to wish it with all of his might for the price of his soul…to who? The devil I suppose, it’s left kind of vague, I suppose on purpose. Overall this was just ok. I liked Frankenstine and Dracula better.

Top 5 Disapointing Books of 2017

I feel bad making this list, but feel like I should. These are books I just really didn’t like. I’m sure a lot of people won’t agree with these because most of them are well-liked books but just didn’t work for me

#5

Anna Karenina, because it is taking me soooÌýlong to get through. The classics are really getting to me lately. I’m thinking I stick to only one a year. I think this book might actually be good, but it’s hard to sludge through all the side conversations and ramblings. I might actually cheat and just find the movie to finish this story. Maybe if it wasn’t about 900 pages it would be an easier read.Ìý

#4

Ember in the Ashes, because I wanted to like this book soo much and I almost did.

Author Bio:

A little about myself. I have been writing for quite a while, but recently published in 2016. Creating stories from the craziness in my mind has always been my passion. I’m an avid reader of romance, erotica, and paranormal. My first published book is “Hearten Christmas which is an FFM erotic novella.

I’m from southern Louisiana but reside in Texas with my hubby of fifteen years, my thirteen-year-old son, nine-year-old daughter, a cat, German Shepherd, Dachshund, eight tarantulas, and two sugar gliders.

Not only do I enjoy writing, and reading; singing is a huge passion.

Mrs. Peregrein’s Home for Peculair Children

First, I want to say that I really loved this book. I think this is a book series I will read over and over again. This does have some wordy language (cussing), so if you’reÌýgiving this book to a preteen just some warning in advance.

The first few chapters I was expecting to start with a bang. Something nutty or crazy cool. While there were some odd happenings going on, it was not quite what I expected. PeculiarÌýChildren starts off a bit slow. You know what though? I didn’t really care.Ìý

Even though the main character Jacob is a wimp in every way, I was still interested in where the book would go. Afterall, my own book has a slow start and doesn’t really get going with “the good stuffâ€ until chapter 6. So I was feeling Riggs. He wanted to get some character building in. He is a brilliantÌýwriter and it shows while reading these books.Ìý

Hopefully no spoilers beyond this point, but readers beware.

When Jacob finally finds these peculiarÌýchildren Rigss almost had me believing they didn’t exist! Some of the children had some weirdÌýabilities, that I didn’t see helping much in the future, but were charming nonetheless.Ìý

I liked Jacob’s character arc and thought Riggs did a good job there. The story just gets better and better as it goes.Ìý

Spoiler!!!! For sure a spoiler!

I thought the whole Jacob falling in love with his grandpa’s ex-girlfriend was weird and a little creepy. That’s just me though. His hormones, it states fogs his perspective of this. It seemed like had Emma lived a normal life Jacob would have been her grandson, not her boyfriend, although this problem is wrapped up with a tidyÌýbow at the end of the series.Ìý

The only other thing (and this is book hopping because this doesn’t happen in this book) is that they leave behind a character, whom I like to believe is still alive, who has one of the most valuable talents! I can only assume she is left behind because she would have made it too easy to defeat their enemies.Ìý

Anyhow, this was a fun book that took me on a great adventure and I couldn’t stop reading untilÌýthe last book in the series. I need to seek out more books by Riggs!

The Grinch Book Tag

I got this tag fromÌýThanks! This was a fun tag!

1. Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out Name a book/series/character that started out well and then went downhill.

For me, this would be American God’s. It started off interesting, and the writing was good, but then the plot just started to meander around and I lost interest.Ìý

2. Annoying relatives won’t leave you alone Name a book that you did not enjoy but everyone else seems to love, and it will not stop haunting you.

Unfortunately, this is sooo many books for me. Like the one mentioned above. I’ll go with Sharp Objects.Ìý

3. Your pets keep knocking over your Christmas decorations Name a character that kept on messing everything up for everyone.

I’m going to go with Rick Grimes. My husband doesn’t agree, but it seems like everything is fine for the people he bumps into and once he gets there his decisions turn everything to crap.Ìý

4. You hear your parents putting presents out and learn that Father Christmas is not real Name a book you were spoiled for.

I feel like I heard everything there was to know about Hunger Games before I even read it.Ìý

5. It’s freezing outside Name a character you just couldn’t warm to.

Bah humbug! I’m feeling like the Grinch lol. I feel like this could be a few characters as well! But I’ll choose the one I dislike the least

Bella Swan

(Although let me say Laia from An Ember in the Ashes is a close second. )

6. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You is being played a lot on the radio, giving you anti-romantic feelings Name a couple that you just could not stand.

Laia and Elias from Ember in the Ashes. Terrible couple. Could have been way more interesting love interestsÌýgetting together. My thing is if there is a love triangle do the characters really love anyone?

7. The scratchy homemade jumper that you got for Christmas years ago but have never worn â€ A bookÌýthat has been sitting on your shelf for years that you are not motivated to read, but do not have the heart to get rid of.

I only keep books I read. Life is to short not to read a book and not get the money back at 1/2 price and buy a better one. Although I have a leatherbound Sherlock I haven’t read yet, but I plan to.

8. Grandma has gotten run over by a reindeer Name a character death that you are still mad about.

I was really upset that Fred Weasley died in Harry Potter. I think it had something to do with the fact they were twins and the comedyÌýreliefÌýof the books.Ìý

9. Shops are overcrowded with shoppers for the holidays Name a series with too many books, or that went on too long.

This is a hard one…I guess Twilight?Ìý

10. The Grinch â€ Name a main character that youÌýabsolutelyÌýhate (not a villain).

Ok this is a new one. Herry from The Picture of Dorian Grey. Hated that guy. Bad influence and terrible person all around.Ìý

As always I tag whoever wants to join in!

I’m going to write a post about this book soon so I’m not going to say too much. This book is a highly paranormal book and I really like the MC.

Old Bones

I already blogged about this book too. It’s a book with some mystery and infidelityÌýgoings on. Very well written.

Sharp Objects

I heard about this book so much and it was often suggested on a group I’m in on FB. I also watched the movie ‘Gone Girl at the theater and loved it! So I thought I’d give it a shot.

This is Flynn’s first book, so I hate saying this (and for that reason I refuse to give it any stars/reviews anywhere else) I hated this book.ÌýThis is a super hyped up book and a New York Times bestseller, but I just could not get into it.Ìý

It was kind of reminiscent of why I hated Palahniuk’s Choke. I hated the main character. There didn’t seem to be anything I could connect with the character about, as well as there was nothing about Camille I even liked, not even a little. She was actually kind of boring to me.Ìý

It was so boring to me, I quit reading on chapter 3. Usually, if a book can’t pull me in by then I just DNF it. My husband read the whole thing, but he too was disappointed in it as well. He was disappointed in the characters and the plot. I can’t really say IÌýread enough of the book to say much about the plot. Also, he said he found out the killer way too early in the book. My mother in law who also read the book was able to figure out the killer early on too. Now about the killer, I’m going to let that one go. One, I didn’t even read far enough to think about it, and second, it is her first book, so I think she should be given some leeway on that.Ìý

I realize this is a book that there are not supposed to be any likable characters, but I guess I’m learning I really don’t like that quality in a book. I really want someone who I can root for not someone to despise.Ìý

An Ember in the Ashes

At first, I thought I was just going to love this book so much, but it kind of fell flat at the end. Laia is what really did it in for me. I mean this book had so much going for it: Set in a RomanesqueÌýtime period, people were being oppressed and you knew an uprising was in the future, the male lead Elias has a pretty badass background and I loved him!Ìý

But Laiaâ€.ÌýI just could not get over how much time was spent in her head because she just was not interesting to me. She spent too much time telling me over and over again how she was a coward. And I get it, I really do, it’s a set up to show me how she really isn’t a coward, but show me don’t tell me. Also, she seemed to fall for anything with legs, it became annoying to me. I realize this is a YA, but eyeroll, everyone does not need a love interest. Besides, there was a more interesting love happening going on with other characters there did not need to be a love square on top of it.

I feel bad because I got 75% of the way through and then skipped to the last chapter. I was just tired of being stuck in people’s heads too often and the love triangle thing got annoying. But overall it wasn’t bad.
