The Strong, Silent Type: Soleil Brodeur

Just like in real life, women are different from one another in a variety of ways. We all have our own strengths. Our own priorities, needs, wants. We are individual. I like for my heroines to reflect that. Some of my heroine’s kick butt. Some of them are fiercely protective of their family. Some are nurturers and some are loners. Strength and courage, derived from love, can make any woman a heroine. No matter how that strength manifests itself.
I love Soleil. To me, she’s a layered character. She feels real even though she is so different. She’s a lonely woman, orphaned, living in hotels. Her closest relationship was with her attorney, a father figure she rarely saw, but remained in touch with. She moved a lot. She found a way to put feeling in her life by becoming an adrenaline junkie. She took chances. All of that worked in Ice’s favor.

Once Soleil realized her life was in danger and she, most likely, would be killed, she had nothing to lose. She couldn’t go to local authorities because she didn’t know who to trust. Her closest confidant was dead. The man she was in a relationship with was the one trying to kill her. Where do you run to? What do you do?
Soleil didn’t stray too far from the life she knew and the woman she’d always been. Meeting Ice was an adventure. Ice was a fantasy. An adrenaline rush. If your days are numbered, make them count. Soleil was determined to have him.

Ice was in a motorcycle club with people he considered family. Soleil had always wanted to be in a family. The allure of having him was a temptation that stripped her inhibitions and emboldened her resolve. The problem? She wasn’t willing to put her dangerous burden onto this man who was offering her exactly everything she’d wanted her whole life. This man and his family of brothers and sisters were willing to take her in, protect her, make her one of them. They were caring. Ice was sweet. She wasn’t about to put a target on his back and endanger Torpedo Ink.

I loved that she was offered the world. Offered protection. Yet, she couldn’t allow herself an easy way out by putting others in danger. That’s a heroine.
Of course, she had a lot to learn about Torpedo Ink. All she had to do is learn to trust.

Ice, Ice Baby! Vendetta Road Heats Up!

Soleil was a woman of wealth, adventure and loneliness. When she realized she had a target on her back she had nothing to lose. So, why not throw caution to the wind and follow your fantasy to the end? All she had to do was make sure she didn’t endanger poor, sweet, kind Ice, or any of his friends.

This couple was unexpectedly romantic and a perfect fit for each other.
Love at first sight, while on a mission, wasn’t anything Ice expected.
EXCERPT
Her hair glowed in the sun so shiny it hurt his eyes. Dark, cascading down her back, it was thick and just wild enough to ruin that good-girl vibe she had going on. She shook her head at something the man said to her and started to turn away, back toward the street. The man, dressed in his impeccable suit grabbed her arm and jerked her back to him.
Ice felt it then. The glacier. That blue well deep inside him, glacier-cold, so cold it burned. Need was there—the need to kill. It was…overwhelming. It swept over him like a tidal wave, yet deep inside he was frozen. He took a step toward the edge of the sidewalk. Cars rushed by but he hardly noticed them. Time had tunneled. Pulled him into a cold, dark place he was all too familiar with. Excerpt Vendetta Road (Read the entire first chapter )
Torpedo Ink, a motorcycle club made up of survivors, assassins abused as children now trying to find a way to live in modern society, has its turn with intense drama and difficult situations. But, it’s also a story of brotherhood and family. Ice has struggled with his existence and his brothers and sisters, are afraid for him. Soleil is as much an answer to the club’s prayers as it is to Ice’s. And they have no problem helping things along.
I love how the story highlights the relationships between the members and offers insight to how they feel about each other. It’s a story of redemption and hope. It’s a unique love story. I hope you enjoy it.

Hope for 2020
A friend and I were talking about what we would like to do in 2020 to make it a better year than this one. The hope is that you always are improving throughout life and that continues regardless of your age.
One thing we agreed on and that I’m committed to is being more present in the lives of my friends and family. It’s so easy to let the day slip by when it’s full of work and family commitments or household commitments. Seconds fly by into hours and before you know it the day has bled into night and I’m exhausted. I still have dogs to care for, my nightly routine to do and all the little things that go with putting the house to rest. This is the time I often write one of the Torpedo Ink books, or whatever book is next in line. Or, I’ll catch up on work emails or maybe I’ll text with my daughters (this happens a lot).
Somewhere in the day or night I need to text, call or email my friends. I love talking to them, laughing and just being silly as only old friends can be. It fills my heart with joy to hear their laughter, or their stories. It makes me feel useful if I can let them vent to me or perhaps help them with some issue they need help with or support for. I have sisters of the heart and I really want to be more present in their lives in some meaningful way this year.
I’m very close with my family, but in 2020 I’d like to commit to doing more one-on-one things with each of my children and grandchildren. Or maybe having a summer get together or more movie nights. It’s all about being more present in the lives of the people I love. I want that.
As a personal commitment in 2020 I am looking to make changes to my home. It’s time to do some remodeling. I’m adding an office where the back deck currently is. I want it to be like a sunroom, inviting and peaceful. I want to redecorate my bathroom and living room. I want to surround myself with things that give me joy and peace.
My wish for my fellow authors or aspiring authors in 2020 is for you to follow your dream. Write the book of your heart. Follow what you’re passionate about and be successful in that pursuit.
And for the world in 2020 I sincerely hope to see it be filled with random acts of kindness.
What are your 2020 commitments?
What do you hope for the world? For yourself? For your family?

Merry Christmas! Good Cheer to All!

I love the holidays and most people know that about me. My great love is my family and the holidays bring us all together in this shared spirit of Christmas. My family loves to laugh so there’s always antics and jokes. Happiness is ageless, timeless and boundless and I know I am truly blessed to be surrounded by my family and friends this season.

I wish the same joy and love to all of you. Regardless of what you celebrate, we can all celebrate those things together.
All the best,
Christine Feehan

It’s a Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
For those who celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you had a wonderful time filled with laughter, love and great food. I spent mine, as I always do, with my family. It was a crazy week just making that happen and finally we decided to go to my daughter’s house in another town since she had room, power and time to cook. It was our first time to have Thanksgiving at Billie Jo’s and it was an utter delight. Everything was inviting, delicious and filled with love.
Once it was all over and we got back home my mind went to thoughts of Christmas. I love Christmas, as many of you know. We’re just now putting up the tree, but I’ve been buying presents for months. The hard part? Not giving the presents away early because I’m so excited about them! LOL
I’ve decided to downsize a bit this year, so we’ll have two trees. We have one in the living room where the gifts will be placed and then one in the kitchen which I do for my grandchildren. They love the kitchen tree. The big one in the living room is filled with years and years of ornaments, some I bought, some gifted and some made. We call it the “I Spy tree and have so much fun finding the various ornaments once they’re all up and placed.
It's also the time of year I send books to the soldiers who will be deployed over the holiday. I’ve worked with the same group that sends out to the soldiers each year for more than a decade now. Soldiers are there for us, defending us and our way of life and they won’t be with their families because they’re protecting mine, so they have a very special place in my heart.
It's a time of giving and appreciation and I never lose sight of that. It’s a time to reach out to old friends and remind them you love them. It’s time to hug the kids, pet the dogs and eat the goodies. Okay, well, it’s ALWAYS time for that, but you know what I mean. LOL
I would love to know about YOUR holiday traditions. Even if it isn’t Christmas. What do you celebrate? How do you celebrate?
Do you wait until after Thanksgiving to put up a tree? The day after? Do you love holiday music? Have specific ornaments that are meaningful? Special dishes that you cook? A special memory?
Share your holiday story with me!

Choosing a Leopard
I’ve always been interested in big cats. When I started writing I knew I’d write at some point, so mixing the two felt natural. While some people have werewolves or dragon shifters, I was intrigued by leopards for several reasons.

First of all, there are so many species of leopard all over the world, but so many are endangered and near extinction. I wanted to be able to bring people’s attention to that without it sounding preachy or forced.
I’ve used several different types of leopards. I hope to include other varieties of leopard in future books as well. I enjoy research about them, learning the differences between the leopards from all areas of the world.
, like Timur and Fyodor, is an Amur leopard from Russia. There are less than 100 Amur leopards in the wild. These are very dominant leopards. Most leopards are, and I knew that would make for some passionate romance.

Sometimes I choose a leopard because of geography. I knew the Russian leopards would be a perfect choice for my guys becoming part of the mob. Of course, they’re really there ensuring nothing too horrible happens with these mobsters they’re in bed with, but they are not choir boys. These are men dangerous and deadly.
But, I’ve written about leopards in the jungle and there are those I’ve been writing about who live in Louisiana. Sometimes the geography matters, sometimes what matters most are the traits of a particular leopard. I do give thought to what kind of leopard best suits the character.

Matching the right leopard to the right human is important. They need to be able to blend seamlessly. My shapeshifters are all a combination of human and leopard, sharing traits and needs. The world of shape-shifting leopards I’ve built has rules in place that I, as the author, follow. Choosing the right leopard is one of the most important.

Leopard Shapeshifters and the Allure of the Alpha Male : Mitya
It’s no secret that my leopard series is my most erotic. And though all of my heroes in all of my series are alpha males, the leopards are particularly dominating predators. Part of that has to do with the nature of leopards, the other has to do with the nature of men. These men are already alpha males, and then we add the violence, dominance and predatory nature of the leopard on top of that. It can be explosive in so many ways.
Leopards are one of the only animals in nature that, even as you are hunting them, they will turn around and start hunting you. They are cunning, intelligent creatures.

Mitya’s leopard is the Amur leopard. Mitya was first introduced as a bodyguard to Alonzo/Fyodor. Just because a leopard shifter works for the main boss doesn’t mean they are not an alpha. Actually, the bodyguards are protectors and the leader must cooperate with them in order to stay safe. Bodyguard positions are all like that.
In the world that I’ve created, all of the male leopards are alpha. But, they are also part of a pack. So, as a society they choose the way their pack will be run. They agree on a leader and agree to obey that leader. In Mitya’s case, he moved up the ranks to become a leader of his own pack. Moving from bodyguard to leader is particularly challenging since Mitya’s always been the person who protects others. It’s not easy for him to give that up.

Mitya Amurov came from Russian and was born into the Vor, the Russian mob. He was the son of a leader of the Vor, expected to ascend into an enforcer and then to leader. But, things went horribly wrong when he was a child. Now, years later, he lives in Texas and knows his past is coming back to haunt him.
Mitya’s love interest is Ania Dover; thrill-seeker, transporter, businesswoman, shifter. This is a woman who is no wilting flower and can certainly stand on her own two feet regardless of what the world throws at her. Ania knows danger. The allure of someone like Mitya is almost too much to ignore.
Mitya realizes who and what Ania is. Claiming her is complicated, which just makes Mitya more determined, more dominant and more dangerous. I love that Mitya is this badass alpha male. If he is able to claim Ania, he’s not likely to let her out of his sight.
So, if you really enjoy those alpha males, Mitya and Ania’s story is a perfect blend of danger, sex and challenge. They are certainly one of the most erotic couples I’ve ever written.

Writing Shapeshifter Stories
I’ve always loved shapeshifter stories and knew that I would write one. Now, I’ve written twelve and I have ideas for so many more.

The idea of people who could, not only turn into an animal, but who had those animal traits and lived by the rules of that type of animal’s lifestyle, intrigued me.
I read many stories in which the person just happened to shift into some kind of animal, but they were otherwise unaffected by that animal. I wanted stories of people who were truly merged with that animal on such a fundamental and profound level that you could feel it when the traits of the animal began to manifest while that person was in human form. And, when in animal form you felt that the personality and beliefs of the human were somewhere deep inside the animal.
When I decided to create my own shapeshifter world I chose leopards for many reasons. One was that I love leopards. I love the majesty of them, the grace and power. They are both beautiful and dangerous all at once.
As I began my extensive research on leopards I realized that leopards from different regions have their own differences from one another. That’s part of the reason I chose the Amur leopard for my Texas leopards. Amur leopards can be found in Russia. I’d already researched Russia and even the Russian mob for other books, so this seemed both natural and fun to write.

Amur leopards are growing extinct. Sadly, there are less than 100 Amur leopards left in the wild. These leopards are one of the most endangered. They are strong predators. I wanted to bring these amazing animals to people’s attention and I wanted to be able to discuss the issue of their slow extinction without it sounding like a lesson.

Mitya Amurov, the hero of Leopard’s Wrath, embodies all the traits of an Amur leopard. So much so, that he doesn’t trust himself. With good reason. Leopards have terrible tempers. They are very dominant. They take what they want or what they need to survive.
Mitya, in my mind, is an example of a shapeshifter character that merges and blends both human and animal. You feel how Mitya struggles to keep his leopard and his leopard traits under his control, which isn’t always possible. It couldn’t be. Not if I’m being true to the rules I’ve set up for my world. The leopard needs to be equally dominant at times. It needs to push at Mitya, insisting on having its way.
The one thing both Mitya and his leopard can agree on is that Ania Dover is special. She calms them. She calls to them on a basic level. And, they want her. Need her. With her leopard pushing at her, recognizing Mitya’s leopard, a sort of dance begins. Sometimes volatile. Always erotic.
Leopards embody passion and when that explodes within the confines of a human body, that passion owns them.
is out now!
Let me know what you love about shapeshifter books. Which of mine are your favorite? Who else writes good shapeshifter books?
