Sally Kilpatrick writes...stuff. She prefers fiction to biographies, but here we are. When not fretting over her biography, Sally writes southern fiction, mystery, and lots of to do lists. She lives with her dashing husband, two precocious kids, and two persnickety cats in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Much Ado About Nothing
Act 5, Scene 5
An epilogue that gives us but a brief glimpse at the honeymoon of Beatrice and Benedick.

Crow caws and a dog answers.

BEATRICE: Soft! What sound is that beyond our marriage bed?

BENEDICK: (leans out window and pulls up a cage with a crow) ‘Tis as you requested, your dog barking at a crow. Marked I well when you said it.

BEATRICE: Said I such a thing? Thou speakest of another Beatrice. Say you love me so we may return to our Scotch jig.

BENEDICK: Troth, I cannot.

BEATRICE: Ah, the cinquepace so soon? Or perchance your potent regiment hath retreated?

BENEDICK: (sputters)

BEATRICE: Your bauble broken? Your needle lacking thread?

BENEDICK: Woman, I have an abundance of thread. Say you love me first, my Lady Disdain.

BEATRICE: That name of old? O sweet Benedick. God give me patience.

BENEDICK: God give you patience! May He grant me more. I fancy a journey to the Netherlands. Now say it.

BEATRICE: Nay.

BENEDICK: (assaults her with kisses)

BEATRICE: {sighs) I fear *I* have caught the Benedick. By my troth, I love thee.

BENEDICK: And I love thee at least ‘til Claudio hangs me up at the door of a brothel house for the sign of blind Cupid.

BEATRICE: What?

BENEDICK: Fret not. He is with his Hero. (sings as he takes her hand to kiss it) Sigh not so, but let them go.

BEATRICE: And be I blithe and bonny?

BENEDICK: (kisses her knuckles and starts working his way up her arm) Aye.

BEATRICE: (sighs anyway, but happily) Hey nonny nonny.

The longer I wrote the more I realized writing is like a maze: if you're stuck, you messed up somewhere earlier which has caused you to hit a dead end. I will ruthlessly cut whole chunks of text and put it in a "Scrap Metal" document. That way I can come back to what I cut just in case I really did need it, but I can back up to the spot where I felt confident and start again. Rarely do I take something from the scrap metal file. Other than that? I may or may not do a fair amount of cussing and whining to my critique partners and husband, all of whom are saints for putting up with me. I hear tell Joshilyn Jackson has a Firefly phase. I tried that out, and binge-watching Joss Whedon is mostly beneficial, although you get to the point where you sigh and say, "I could never write like that!"(less)

Greyhound

My Monday movies series continues–and I hope to expand the blog to other topics, but I’m doing a second draft of Much Ado About Barbecue, so I’m not quite to regular blogging. Do get ready for a book about warring barbecue houses, though. Estimated release date in early September!

On to Greyhound–and, yes, there will be a spoiler or two. Before I start this post, you need to understand that war pic

I'm trying to figure out why this book didn't speak to me the way it spoke to so many other people. I think it's a combination of things: 1) I'm on deadline so I'm cranky and very hard to satisfy right now, 2) this story is more of a how and less of ...more

Imma have to hit pause on this one because it's making me soooooo angry.

Why? Because I lived through the nineties, and looking at that time in retrospect proves Yarrow's point that the 90s were a backlash to any strides women made in the 70s and 80s.

“I'm going to do what any self-respecting English major would do: pull something out of my ass.”
Beth Kendrick, Second Time Around

“I don't teach writing. I teach patience. Toughness. Stubbornness. The willingness to fail. I teach the life. The odd thing is most of the things that stop an inexperienced writer are so far from the truth as to be nearly beside the point. When you feel glosbal doubt about your talent, that is your talent. People who have no talent don't have any doubt.”
Richard Bausch

“Maybe the midnight disease was like that, too. After a while you lost the ability to distinguish between your fictional and actual words; you confused yourself with your characters, and the random happenings of your life with the machinations of a plot.”
Michael Chabon, Wonder Boys
