“He stared at her again and then smiled a big, goofy smile. “I didn’t really think of it like that.â€� He looked lost in thought for a minute and finally, a mischievous grin formed on his face. “Wait here a minute.â€�
He got up and left. He returned a few minutes later and handed her something. A piece of paper, folded too many times.
“What’s this?� She took it from him, amused and smiling with curiosity.
He sat down next to her and shrugged. “I dunno, some guy asked me to give it to you.�
She tentatively started unfolding, looking up at him with each bend of the paper. Just before the last fold, she could see the crude handwriting inside, as if it were written by a child. She lifted the sheet, opening it up fully and stared at it.
Danarya, will you go with me?

“Oh my gosh!â€� she squealed with delight. She burst out laughing. “I haven’t received one of these since fifth grade.”

He got up and left. He returned a few minutes later and handed her something. A piece of paper, folded too many times.
“What’s this?� She took it from him, amused and smiling with curiosity.

“Yes.� He walked over to one of the picnic tables and grabbed a backpack, which just happened to be there. He pulled a blanket from the pack and laid it down on the sand next to her.
She jumped up and away from him with her fins in her hands. She held them up like a weapon, not taking her eyes off of him. He saw her reaction and it didn’t take long to figure out the thoughts running through her mind.
“Hey! No. It’s not what you think.� He stepped closer, but she swung her fins at him and whacked him across the arm. “Ouch!� He looked at her like she was insane.
“Stay away from me. This is so not happening. I’ll hit you again, I swear.”

“A great diving scene. Worth the read just for that:
“Randy! You have the best eyes for bubbles. Find my missing diver.�
Paul leaned over the boat and yelled at the people waiting in the water. “Hey! Where’s . . .� He examined the faces. It didn’t take long to figure out who was missing. His heart spiraled to his feet.
“Oh, no, no, no!� He didn’t hesitate to jump to action. He yelled out orders as he put his gear on in record time. “Get back on the boat. Now!�
“I see bubbles! Over there, ‘bout fifteen meters,� Randy called before anyone had a chance to do anything.
Paul stood on the back of the boat, all geared up and holding an extra tank with a regulator already attached. He looked to see where Randy pointed and took a giant stride into the water. He didn’t bother to surface before starting the fastest descent he’d ever made.”
