I guess it depends on your taste, but I love the type of humor and brush with philosophy as well as historical accuracy, as far as I can tell. Don't forget that the first part of the book follows the lives of two little boys who live in a culture of religious oppression and wrought with curiosity about life, sex, etc. I thought it was brilliant. One of the few works of fiction I not only had patience for, but enjoyed.(less)

I will say that the more you know about religion... Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism the more you will understand the book and the humour within. Think of it like Mel Brooks... theres a mix of wit, intellect, slapstick, and tawdry humour so that even if you don't get every single joke you will still enjoy it.

Each year my Easter tradition (since I'm not going to cross the threshold of a church again) is to read or listen to this book again and each time there is a new detail I pick up on even after 5+ reads. (less)
Steph I think His Dad probably knew, but I guess He chose to let His Son figure out the cruelty of the world through experience rather than lectures. 😆
