What's the story with not using quotation marks?

Velma I believe that some authors prefer to write dialogue sans quotation marks to encourage (force) the reader to slow down the reading process in order toâ€¦m´Ç°ù±ðI believe that some authors prefer to write dialogue sans quotation marks to encourage (force) the reader to slow down the reading process in order to increase understanding and savor the prose. An article discussing this idea can be found . The author of the article doesn't care for the practice, but personally I think, in this case in particular, it supports Haruf's spare style.

Does anyone teach this book to high school students? In a sea of 1984, Macbeth, Beowulf and Frankenstein, I need to find something more uplifting!

Is this appropriate for a 7th grader to read? I have a hard time finding country setting books for my middle schoolers who are wanting a rural setting without mature content.
