“Yo no amo la vida, sino la JUSTICIA, que está por encima de la vida.”Las creencias basadas en dogmas suelen estar blindadas frente al razonamiento, digamos que funcionan como mundos lógicos cerrados imposibles de traspasar. La duda no se admite y se persigue implacablemente pues actúa como una bomba interior capaz de hacer explotar ese mundo en mil pedazos.
Camus plantea en su obra el dilema de la violencia como medio legítimo y útil para alcanzar unos fines.
El fin está claro: un mundo mejor, más justo. Un fin cuya posibilidad Camus no cuestiona.
“Llegará un día en que… Todos seremos hermanos y la justicia hará transparentes nuestros corazones.”Su posibilidad exige la destrucción del mundo antiguo…
“… matamos para construir un mundo en el que nadie mate nunca más. Aceptamos ser criminales para que la tierra se cubra por fin de inocentes.”… La violencia es un camino, quizás el único para conseguirlo.
“Sólo la bomba es revolucionaria.”Admitidos estos dogmas, los enemigos dejan de ser personas para ser encarnaciones de un poder a destruir.
“No es a él a quien voy a matar. Mato al despotismo… Le mataré. ?Con alegría!”Al mismo tiempo, el propio individuo se funde con la causa, la vida solo es concebible a su servicio, la muerte aparece como forma de dignificar la vida.
“?Comprendes por qué he pedido arrojar la bomba? Morir por la causa es la única manera de estar a su altura. Es la justificación.”Este sacrificio por un mundo mejor librará al individuo de una existencia absurda, sin propósito, un camino entendido como un destino prácticamente ineludible.
“La libertad es también un presidio, mientras exista un solo esclavo en la tierra,”Stepan representa el ideal terrorista, una mente monolítica, libre de dudas, donde solo cuenta el fin.
“Comprendí que no bastaba denunciar la injusticia. Era menester dar la vida para combatirla. Ahora soy feliz.”
“STEPAN: No hay límites. La verdad es que vosotros no creéis en la revolución. Vosotros no creéis. Si creyerais totalmente, completamente, en ella, sí estuvierais seguros de que con nuestros sacrificios y nuestras victorias llegaremos a construir una Rusia liberada del despotismo, una tierra de libertad que acabará por cubrir el mundo entero, si no dudarais de que entonces el hombre, liberado de sus amos y de sus prejuicios alzará al cielo la cara de los verdaderos dioses, ?qué pesaría la muerte de dos ni?os? Admitiríais que os asisten todos los derechos, todos, ?me oís? Y si esta muerte os detiene es porque no tenéis seguridad de estar en vuestro derecho. “STEPAN: Qué importa, si la amamos (la revolución) lo bastante para imponerla a la humanidad entera y para salvarla de sí misma y de su esclavitud.Una vez la duda entra su avance es imparable y se llega a cuestionar todo, no solo los límites del terrorismo, sino el terrorismo en sí.

Camus’ ideas on rebellion and justice put on stage!
Les Justes has a special place in the collected works of Camus. It is a classical play, referring back to Aristotelian questions of time, space and action within drama, using a historical event to make the psychological development of human beings evident:
“J’ai seulement t?ché à rendre vraisemblable ce qui était déjà vrai.”
A paraphrase of Boileau’s suggestions in his L’Art Poétique:
“Jamais au spectateur n'offrez rien d'incroyable: Le vrai peut quelquefois n'être pas vraisemblable.”
At the same time, the play ties in with Camus’ reflective essays on mankind, especially , where the historical person of Kaliayev is analysed in depth. The drama is Greek in essence: the characters must prepare for death, one way or another. But the premises are highly modern, based on the question of justice, and justification of violence in order to establish a new order in the world.
The basic plot is purely historical, recounting the assassination of Archduke Serge in Russia in 1905, and the later hanging of the terrorist Kaliayev. The questions raised in the dialogues however do not circle around these external events, but around questions of right and wrong, dogma, belief and passion for humanity and life versus duty towards the future.
The intensity of the opinions expressed through the different characters’ views evokes the atmosphere of the Café de Flore or Deux Magots, where philosophers argued for their personal take on a hopeless situation, post World War II, in the face of weapons of mass destruction and oppressive regimes, destroyed cities and ineffable crimes against humanity committed in the centre of European consciousness.
What does freedom mean in a world where most people suffer?
“La liberté est un bagne aussi longtemps qu’un seul homme est asservi sur la terre”, argues one of the main characters, following a hardliner approach of disregarding human sacrifice as long as the future cause benefits. “La bombe seule est révolutionnaire.”
Violence is not only acceptable, but necessary according to this world view, represented by the character Stepan. Opposing him, with passionate love for life and humanity, the idealist Kaliayev exclaims:
“J’aime la vie. Je ne m’ennuie pas. Je suis entré dans la révolution parce que j’aime la vie.”
“Je n’aime pas la vie, mais la justice qui est au dessus de la vie”, replies Stepan, thus establishing the conflict that Camus ponders upon: the limits of freedom and justice in human society. As the dialogue moves on, the characters expose the flaws in their arguments when they encounter moral questions that do not fit their theories.
Is it justified to kill children? A dogmatic revolutionary says yes, if it serves the cause he believes in. A humanist says no, for in order to have an ethically functioning cause, you have to remain innocent of the crimes of which you accuse your oppressors, otherwise you soon turn into one of them.
While debating on killing children, most terrorists agree, but then the question is extended to wives, innocent bystanders and so on. Is it ever justified to kill for a cause? In the face of present-day terrorism, this question is as valid as it was a century ago in Russia or during the resistance movements in the Second World War.
While the revolutionaries stay in the deadlock of their different ideas on rebellion, sacrifice and the overarching cause of the Organisation, Skouratov, who represents pragmatic society and who tries to change Kaliayev in prison, refuses to accept ideas as a basis for his actions:
“Que voulez-vous, je ne m’intéresse pas aux idées, je m’intéresse aux personnes.”
“La haine? Encore une idée. Ce qui n’est pas une idée, c’est le meurtre. Et ses conséquences, naturellement.”
He approaches Amartya Sen’s as an evaluation of practical results, positive or negative, rather than as a theory to force upon reality.
It does sound like more common sense than the radical ideas the terrorists favour, but there is a question remaining open, which was acutely evident to Camus, having lived through World War II: violence must be justified sometimes, if it prevents evil from spreading. Where to draw the line, that is the question. Complete liberty gives the strongest power absolute freedom of action, while complete justice denies the individual human being the right to develop according to choice.
The question will continue to arise. More topical than ever, despite its shape of classical drama, or maybe because of it, as it is representing timeless issues, "Les Justes" is highly recommended!

Leída del tirón y francamente maravillado con esta obra.
Mi primer acercamiento a Camus y es brutal, los diálogos son brillantes y complejos porque delimitan muy bien las personalidades de cada uno de los personaje y sus límites morales, sus justificaciones y sus subjetividades en temas como la justicia, que es lo que aquí toma protagonismo como tema central.
Los justos en sí es un drama moral y ético de sus personajes así como una representación de lo tenso y peligroso que resulta un dogma o una creencia política llevada hasta las más infames desiciones y acciones tomadas por el ser humano, que coge de excusa o principio el bienestar social de todo un país pero que se resume en una sola palabra: terrorismo.
El punto de no retorno está entre la individualidad de una persona y la bomba que debe poner para cometer un atentado capaz de "libertar" a todo un pueblo. Y el principal estandarte como no podía de ser otra forma lleva por nombre "revolución"; una que se cuece entre las sombras para dar cara a la tiranía impuesta por el Estado de Rusia.
La existencia misma de esta Organización terrorista tiene toda una gama de personajes grises, ya que cada uno de ellos tienen sus propias opiniones al respecto y los límites morales que no deben cruzar cuando emplean un término tan complejo como la "justicia" ya sea desde la individualidad o la pluralidad, y más cuando esta lleva de por medio un acto ruin y horroroso como el del asesinato no solo de quien está se?alado como culpable (en este caso el gran Duque) sino de personas inocentes en el medio como lo pueden ser ni?os.
Brutal. Un ejercicio no solo social y político sino que en su centro es todo un debate filosófico y existencialista sobre la moral, la ética, la justicia y me atrevería a decir sobre la tan llamada frase sobre si "el fin justifica los medios" en cualquier contexto por muy peliagudo que sea.

a discussion centered around revolution, the intricacies of it and the way the line is so subtly blurred between the killing of a man (and humanity to a certain extent) and the killing for an idea (that is, in theory, worth fighting for). the question of the common good and the means, justifiable or not, to achieve it. love and hatred in times of war and how both can be equally as necessary and yet as destructive. and death, no matter the form it takes.

I saw this play as a kind of trailer for L'Homme révolté... it explores the same themes, but in a much more accessible way. The central paradox is the conflict of intuitions about the ethics of revolution. The rebel is sickened by the injustice of the world, and takes responsibility for creating justice by the use of violence - in this case, the assassination of the Grand Duke. However, this arguably makes him just as bad as the oppressors.
Les Justes is, as one would expect, beautifully written, and is very economical in working you through the different sides of the question and engaging your emotions. Given that Camus played an active part in the Resistance, it is not an academic exercise - these must have been issues that disturbed him a great deal. I kept wondering whether the 9/11 terrorists had these kinds of discussions. Full points to Camus for writing a play that's just as relevant now as when he wrote it.

The play is based on actual historical figures, in 1905, a terrorist group ( social revolutionaries )have attacked and assassinated the Russian Grand Duke.........
The main theme is hating violence , torture, assassination and getting lost in this strife...
And the question raised in this play is whether it is right to kill in the name of justice..?
Ivan Kaliayev, a protagonist of the play, fails in killing the Duke at his first attempt....
because the Duke is accompanied by small children. He refuses to deprive the Dukes relatives of their young lives.....
Returning to the terrorists cell,Kaliayev is involved with a harsh quarrel with his fellow members as to the justification of killing for the purpose of revolution ......
a quarrel concerning whether the end justifies the means.......
the debate centers around limit of violence, Can one kill in the
interests of the revolution........
"Children! That is all you know. Don't you understand that because he failed to kill these two, thousands of Russian children will die of hunger for many years to come? "

and u would be on neither side....
the oppressed with their miserable and humiliating condition and their desire of freedom., or the suppressing ......
as u believe If a man commits a murder,even if this victim deserve to be killed, that man must be killed...........

Hacía ya mucho tiempo que no leía nada de Camus. La verdad es que había olvidado su capacidad para tratar temas complicados y su capacidad para hacer que la persona que está leyendo la historia se plantee muchas cosas y reflexione sobre estos asuntos.
En este caso, tenemos una obra de teatro en la que aparece un grupo de personas que están planeando atentar contra la vida de alguien poderoso. En parte, esta trama es interesante porque se humanizan los sentimientos de estas personas, podemos ver todas las cosas que les afectan.
Todos los integrantes del grupo pasan por momentos en los que se plantean por qué están en esa situación, si vale la pena. Esto empieza porque la persona contra la que iban a atentar iba acompa?ada de dos ni?os. El hecho de que estuvieran esos dos chavales dentro del carro hizo que la persona que llevaba la bomba se replanteara ejecutar el plan porque no quería tener en su conciencia la muerte de dos personas tan jóvenes.
En realidad, la trama te hace pensar en el poder de las ideas y el poder de la moralidad. Ha sido una lectura muy interesante.
