A grumpy alien, a stubborn human, and a chance at a new future
Nothing has gone right for Mary since her parents were forced to sell their farm. Alone and desperate, she seizes a chance to return.
Although the home she once loved is now a rundown shack and the once prosperous farm is little more than weeds and dirt, she knows she can make it work. She certainly doesn’t need any help from the huge, grumpy red alien who keeps showing up on her doorstep.
Borgaz lost everything in the war - everything except his loyalty to his friend and former commander. Even if that means helping the other male establish a sanctuary for former soldiers in a farm community in the middle of nowhere.
He knows his damage is past healing, so when a beautiful and annoyingly independent female arrives, he has every intention of keeping his distance. But even though she refuses to admit it, the stubborn little female clearly needs his help.
As they work together to repair Mary’s farm, will they also end up repairing their own past wounds?
Each book in this series features a different couple and may be read as a standalone, but the books do link together. This sweet and steamy series is intended for mature readers.
Yay, more in this world! A promising start with a new batch of warriors and the human ladies who love them... I thought this was a really sweet story about working through trauma. And you know, he had a prehensile tail so....
a lot of grammatical errors and POV switching from 3rd to 1st person mid-paragraph. i may read the next books as palate cleansers between more challenging reads.
A sweet story about an alien dude with PTSD (from the war) and a lonely woman whom try to find some happiness together on her family's abandoned farm. Slow burny.
A delicious story! This grouchy Borgaz - he can’t resist helping one feisty girl. Mary is a force to be reckoned with. She’s determined to make her way on her own and has the ability to do so. But it’s SO much better when Borgaz pitches in. I love her persistence! She keeps working away at Borgaz, wearing down his defenses (they are for her ‘safety). What a splendid story this is! it’s a delightful romance! And there are more very appealing characters dying to have their stories told. Will we be seeing them soon, Ms. Phillips? Please?
When I read something by Honey Phillips, I'm enough of a goof to admit that I'm expecting something as sweet as her name.
And man oh man, did I certainly get it!
Picking up more or less after the events of Seven Brides for Seven Alien Brothers, this series takes place on the same planet, a hop, skip, and a jump away from our original characters! So far, while the characters have been mentioned, we haven't really interacted with them yet, but that's okay. This was a sweet story, and I'm sure there's more to come that I will just want to plow on through!
The couple featured here is Mary and Borgaz--a sweet farmer girl and an ex-warrior trying to find his place on a farm. They have an instant attraction to one another, but Borgaz in particular holds back because of how "damaged" he is from his wartime experiences, and so this becomes a story of healing as well as romance. A bit like , actually, except that this time it's more of emotional scars rather than physical ones.
Still, love love LOVED it, and looking forward to the other characters' romances moving forward--for one lavender-coloured alien in particular, although I'm not seeing his book out yet. Whew, patience, Fantasia dear, patience...
After her parents sold their farm for a new life in the city, Mary (h) struggles to get by on her own after they perish in an accident. When an opportunity to reclaim the family farm arises, Mary doesn’t hesitate to return to her happy place, though the run-down conditions mean she has her work cut out for her. Former warrior Borgaz (H) is part of a group of aliens setting up a sanctuary for former soldiers in the farming community and is sent on a recon mission across the property when he comes across Mary. She’s determined to do things on her own and finds it hard to accept the help that Borgaz surprisingly finds himself offering. Their back-and-forth banter is really sweet and sassy at times. Borgaz is so frustrating at times as he runs hot and cold with poor Mary as he tries to battle his own demons. She has her work cut out for her to convince him that he is worthy of love. The way that they worked together on the farm, fixing things up, cooking meals, and looking out for one another were all lovely demonstrations of the love they felt for one another. Loved having Rosie and Harkan back, and it will be great getting to see each of the new aliens find love. Sweet and spicy alien-human romance with a bit of angst.
Mary has been down on her luck. Her parents sold their farm and moved to the city for Mary to go to college. Well, her parents died and she has been struggling. She gets a letter that her farm is being returned to her if she wants it. Mary makes her way home, but doesn't plan on Borgaz. He is a bossy alien that was surveying the farms in the area that the alien warriors have been given to manage. He is so protective and doesn't want to let Mary do all the work on her own. I loved the setting and completely visualized the farm because a family member lives in a 1912 home. There are some cute bits of humor. Both Mary and Borgaz are stubborn. It makes for some good back and forth between the two. This starts out as a slow-burn, but these two MORE than make up for it later. It's got the spicy spice. Great new spin-off of series! I am looking forward to reading Temel soon. 4.5 stars content! 4 spice emojis!
This is my first human/alien erotica.😂 The story was a bit lacking on plot and the sex scenes were funny, but felt like they were written by a man who loves watching porn. Not my fav.
In this book, Honey Phillips returns us to Cresca, where we meet Borgaz, who suffers from the trauma of war, and Mary, who returns to her family farm to find that it has been neglected. Both have their issues and though they don't see eye to eye at first, they begin to get close. This is a stunning story of coming back from pain and trauma to find love and your fated mate.

Gleeful Goblin Review: This story was really balanced in terms of telling storylines of family and sense of home loss for FMC as well as PTSD recovery for MMC as the paths that MCs are on and find each other along is just *chef's kiss*. This scene stuck out to me from MMC illustrating his feelings about himself and love: "How long had it been since he’d had any interest in a female? Not since those first painful, confused days after the war had ended when he’d realized that the end of the fighting hadn’t meant the end of his nightmares. He’d been desperately seeking any respite from the horrors in his dreams and he had tried seeking solace with various females. None had helped and after the third time he woke to find one cowering across the room from him, frightened by his night terrors, he had stopped trying. If those worldly females, used to rough ports and rough males, couldn’t handle the scars the war had left, there was little hope that a delicate little human could do so."
Or there's a slightly later scene between MMC and a fellow former soldier: “Have you told her about your difficulties? his friend added quietly “No. He scowled. “And I don’t have any. My injuries have all healed. Temel gave him that same penetrating look, but he didn’t argue, even as Borgaz looked away. He had told him of his nightmares once, but it had been long ago and he’d never mentioned it again. He should have known that his commander would remember. “So you say, Temel said calmly. “But if you intend to court her - “I do not. He dragged his gaze away from the sight of Mary’s glowing face and forced himself to move away from the window. “I am no fit mate for anyone. They stared at each other for a long moment, and then Temel shook his head. “You do not give yourself sufficient credit. “She deserves better. Even though the thought of another male courting her brought all his most possessive instincts roaring to life." My heart just breaks for MMC reading those scenes and are a great example of the foundation laid where the love story is built between these characters. FMC is pretty on par for having walls up due to having lost her family and her family farm which is what makes their mutual melt for each other DEEPLY satisfying for me. There nothing rushed about the story, everything feels very well paced and natural with timing. An absolute smash hit book. 5/5 Stars.

Borgaz is the first book in Honey Phillips new series How the Aliens Won Us, which is a spin off series from the author's previous series Seven Brides for Seven Alien Brothers. This series is set on an Earth where Aliens and humans are beginning to coexist (and have kids) together after a devastating war was over. You don't need prior knowledge of the first series, but I really enjoyed that one and so was happy to see more alien warriors find their happiness.
As you can probably get from names of both series (i.e. a play on the movies Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and How the West Was Won), while there is modern technology, their is a quaint feeling from the farm/rural/regional setting. It's a heartwarming premise, alien warriors, who have physical and mental injuries after their time in war, are taking over local farms near the town of Wainwright. They are completely peaceful because they are seeking their own and the leader of each platoon believes this kind of rewarding work will help their team mates.
In this book we meet Mary, a human woman whose parents had sold their farm to move to the city so that Mary could have more education and opportunities at the spaceport city. Unfortunately, the human that brought their farm let it become run down. Now with her parents gone and not prospects in the city, Mary takes the opportunity to go back to her family's farm.
That is where she meets Borgaz. One of the aliens who have purchased and taken over the farms. Borgaz suffers from PTSD nightmares and because of that he doesn't believe that he is good enough to be any woman's mate. Yet, when he realises that stubborn Mary needs help because the house is unlivable, Borgaz cannot help but to help her.
Mary and Borgaz have an instant connection, despite both being stubborn about their attraction for different reasons, they developed a strong bond. They both have so much strength and resilience, so I enjoyed seeing as their connection deepened and went from acquaintances, to friends to lovers.

Honey Phillips just doesn't disappoint! Her world building and flare for writing characters you can't help but !I've is phenomenal. We are revisiting the world of seven brides and a new group of warriors displaced from the war have come to try and find a place to call home and peace from the nightmares that plague them. Borgaz is a big gorgeous red warrior who suffers from horrible nightmares and ptsd. He's here with his commander hoping that being out in the middle of beautiful nowhere that he'll finally fond peace. . when he's sent to check the surrounding farm land he meets the female that will change his life. Mary has suffered from trusting the wrong people since the death of her parents. She's lost her credits and doesn't have a home to call her own. She's missed the farm she grew up on but had to leave when her family was threatened by their neighbor who wanted the land. When she receives a letter offering her a dream come true she takes it. When she arrives she realizes that its going to be more work than she thought for her dreams to be a reality. Then she meets Borgaz. Sparks fly, tempers rise and passion flares to life. Both trying to find not only a place where they belong but someone to belong too. You have to read and find out what happens to Mary and Borgaz you won't regret it. Sweet, steamy and a perfect cold winters night read! Highly recommend🌟🔥💖🔥💖🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖
Artek and his brothers (in SBfSAB) had an idea to bring some of their other wounded brothers-in-arms to their small sanctuary to live and work and heal and, well, here we are. Borgaz is the first of the new crew to find his special someone and he REALLY fights it. Mostly because he thinks someone as damaged him doesn't deserve love.
Guess what, buddy? Love doesn't care how damaged you are. It's going to chase you down and force you to deal with it head on. Which isn't to say Borgaz doesn't do the retreat and hide on several occasions because that totally happens. But he figures things out. Eventually.
On Mary's end, she's a little world-weary and a lot prickly when she first meets Borgaz. She's grieving and dealing with the fallout of trusting the wrong person and she's not about to let some big, bossy alien male kick her out of the one place she feels at home. As it turns out, Borgaz's bossiness kind of grows on her and soon these two are sparking off one another something fierce.
A run-down farm, a lady who refuses to back down, a male with a lot of heart, and friends who don't let someone get away with running even though it's very much what they think they need to do. I'm ready to see what sort of lady tames Temel's heart now!
As soon as I saw Borgaz on Amazon I was like, “Ooooooh, give me! and then I was super bummed that it was only available for preorder and wasn’t out until January 4th. I couldn’t wait to read it because I loved the cover, I love the series that it’s set in/a part of and having to wait until January was just argh, you know? I didn’t actually read it on release day because I did forget about it, but when I was looking in my Discover section on my kindle app for my second book of the year, I saw several Honey Phillips books and it all came back to me. I immediately went to go get it and started reading it as soon as I could!
I’ve only read two books in the Seven Brides for Seven Alien Brothers series, but I’m determined to read most, if not all of them this year, but I was so excited that Borgaz was set in that world too and from the moment I started reading, I just felt happy to be visiting it again. I was also looking forward to meeting a new cast of alien warriors and their partners and Borgaz didn’t disappoint! It was fun and playful, but also tugged on my heartstrings. I loved Borgaz and Mary and their banter/fighting and chemistry. They were adorable and I think they were a fun couple to start this new series off. Borgaz is a great little read and I can’t wait to read more from this world!
NOTE: There is a short story before this, called “You Got Alien Trouble!, which is available as a free podcast on Read Me Romance (23rd May 2023), or as an ebook download. The main characters are mentioned in this one, along with their story, but are not really central to the plot in this one. It does however, provide the link between the Seven Brides for Seven Alien Brothers Series, and this series.
Mary is returning to the farm that her family was forced to leave a few years ago. Life has been harder than she planned in that intervening time, and she’s not afraid of the hard work the farm will require. Borgaz is an alien settler, a former warrior with nightmares and PTSD from the war he and his friends fought. He is concerned when he finds Mary struggling to do things by herself, but her doesn’t want to burden her with a male of his background
This is an enjoyable return to the Seven Brides world, with a new crew of aliens needing the peace and quiet of a farm valley to recover from the invisible wounds they received in the war. It’s a fast paced romantic romp, with an alien warrior (scarred inside and out) learning how to live again, and a human woman doing the same. If you enjoyed the original series, or are a fan of alien romance, then this is a quick, entertaining romance you’ll enjoy reading.
I'm so disappointed. I absolutely loved the seven brides for seven alien brothers series, and this continuation is letting me down. This book starts with the alien male Borgaz immediately believing that Mary whom he is meeting under dubious circumstances is his mate, but instead of talking about it with her he immediately starts acting like she can't do anything without his permission. He is very alpha male, and he acts as if she's too delicate to work at all. Mary who proclaims to be independent and self-sufficient spends the entirety of the book saying it, but letting Borgaz do the majority of the work. It was contradictory, and I really didn't like it. There's also the inclusion of the whole I'm damaged so we can't be together, but I'm making that decision for you aspect. Which is a plot point I absolutely hate. The steam was good, but I felt like their connection was based on insta-lust. As far as the atmosphere it was very basic, and so were the secondary characters. I like Honey Phillips writing style, but this book wasn't for me. Overall, I recommend the Seven Brides series over this one. That series had beautifully written characters that respected one another, and really built an emotional connection. This book unfortunately didn't have those aspects.
Series: How The Aliens Were Won #1 Rating: 2 stars - It was ok
This series takes place on the same planet as the Seven Brides for Seven Alien Brothers series and features another group of alien warriors who are struggling with the aftereffects of the war and have decided to take up ranching/farming.
Borgaz and Mary’s story was ok. The majority of this story was Borgaz pushing Mary away after every kiss or intimate interaction because he felt he wasn’t good enough for her because of his PTSD. I was fine with this at first but it quickly got old, and just kept happening until almost the end of the book, which was disappointing.
Outside of the constant push pull of the relationship, nothing happens besides them fixing up her farm, which to be honest, was pretty boring. I probably will give book two a chance because I am interested in learning more about Temel and the rest of the men in this group.
TW: PTSD and nightmares; death of parents mentioned; alcoholism mentioned,
(This review is really for the whole series because, OMG, I couldn't stop reading.)
If you’re a fan of westerns with some spice and the MMC is an alien instead of human, then this is the series for you. Each of these books is about a human female who meets/pairs with one of a group of aliens who are healing from their own war wounds. They are working the land on an earth-like planet and the women are likewise trying to figure out their lives.
Initially, I wondered how many different storylines you could come up along the same theme. Well, Honey Phillips doesn’t disappoint.
Each story is as individual as the MMC and MFC that fall in love. And when I say, I couldn’t put the books (ebooks) down, I am not lying. I read through the whole series over the course of a weekend and then waited impatiently for #7 to be released in June.
Each of the characters is endearing and fallible and wounded. I found myself rooting for each and every one of them. I have the release date for number 8 in my calendar and I can hardly wait!
Mary and Borgaz surprise eachother. Mary is determined never to have to depend on anyone ever again because then she’ll never be let down. She’s a little damaged, but she’s also a survivor. Borgaz barely puts up with the people who are like family to him, he’s kind of broken but doesn’t think he needs help. He’s been through some things, it comes through in the story, and you’ll understand it when you read it. When they meet, neither one of them know how to compromise, they both think they’re right and think they’re better off alone. Individually, they’re a little bit much, but together, they make sense. This story grows on you though. With each successive chapter, you can see what they don’t want to admit, and it’s cute.and sexy. I loved reading about these two characters, and how they grew as individuals and even learned to accept that their original thinking might be off a little?
What an absolute treat , to go back to the old Cartwright neighborhood, and see some old friends !!! Mary 's family had a farm here, but had to move. Years later , her friend Rosie, who recently married Commander Artek , told her that the farm could be hers again, if she wanted . YES , She wanted !!!! She Hated the city , and could not wait to get back home !! Borgaz, is a former warrior with his squadron brothers, who have obtained this land to hopefully start over. Since the war, none of them had moved on. So together they thought to make a life on this new planet. As Borgaz is looming around and surveying the land , he sees a human female badly in need of help. Even if she says otherwise !! These two are oil and water from the very beginning, and it was a complete treat to watch their romance blossom!! A lovely read !!! Looking forward to the next in this series !!
I really enjoyed Mary and Borgaz’s alien-human, opposites attract, healing romance. This story had a good balance of humor, love, real life issues, and spice. Mary is a human who is barely scraping by in the city when she’s given the opportunity to reclaim her family’s farm. Unfortunately, when she arrives the buildings and fields are in terrible shape. The surrounding farms are being used to help alien warriors heal and move past their battle scars. Borgaz is one such alien from Erythra. He meets Mary on the day she returns to the farm. He is immediately drawn to her but believes he is not a suitable mate. Of course, Mary no longer is willing to rely on any man after her past experiences so that works out well. Except that Borgaz keeps helping her on the farm and the proximity makes their determination waiver. Despite being short, the story was well written, the characters had dimension and the storyline was engaging. 3.5 stars.
I have read all of this author's "Seven Brides" series, and I decided to continue on to this series. This story follows a new squad of alien warriors settling down on the frontier just next door to the old set. So, while this book can be read alone, I would suggest reading the seven brides series because there's a lot of history mentioned and cameos from characters of that series.
I liked this book, but I took a star off because it felt really rushed. I get that fated mate stories usually are, but it felt like important things were mentioned but just dropped. For example, the Fmc had all of her money and savings stolen by a male, which left her distrustful of all romantic notions. But she never tells the MC about it, leaving her to seem distrustful for no reason. I thought that would be a great discussion for the pair to have to understand each other better.
Overall, it is a feel-good book that skips right to the happy ending.
This is a story of discovery and romance. I loved Mary. Thinking she could and should do everything by herself. (Independent comes to mind). I love the slow realization of what she should and what she could do and the many ways Borgaz shows her that she doesn't need to do everything by herself. She doesn't want to make the same mistakes from her past. Borgaz teaches her to trust again. I love all the ways he does that. Borgaz is also a troubled soul. I like that Mary also teaches him that the past is just that. It was fun reading how they helped each other. The flow was excellent. The banter between the two was fun to read. Romance of course had steam. And the perfect HEA. An excellent story with heart.

"She refused to make the mistake of being dependent on anyone else again."
When life offers Mary an unexpected second chance she decides to take it, hoping she has nothing left to lose.
Borgaz knows what his commander hopes will come of their little group of warriors settling on an out of the way farm... unfortunately none of those warriors believe it is possible, but they are willing to follow their commander to the ends of the galaxy, they trust his leadership... and maybe a small part of each of them hopes their commander achieves his goals with this project.
I found a lot to love in this done in one Kindle unlimited book. The small town/community spirit of neighbors helping neighbors, the belief that just because you can do something on your own doesn't mean you should have to, and the underlying sense of hope - for the future, and that people can heal.
Borgaz, a red Alien, is mired in the ghastly experiences of the war. He has flashbacks and nightmares. This is the start of the storyline of these brave but broken alien men trying to cleave a life for themselves on the vast farm Temel, their leader has purchased. Borgaz has been charged with completing a survey of the property and the dilapidated buildings across it. Mary has been promised one of the farms that used to belong to her family. She is independent, strong, a hard worker and fully committed to bringing her family farm back to life unaware how broken down it has become. Borgaz meets, this determined woman, when Borgaz hears loud noises coming from the farm he is surveying that should be empty. A sweet and sexy and tormented story.
A ranch full of aliens who have PTSD take on 7 farms not realizing one of them has been promised to Mary whose parents sold to a predatory lender who stole her finds after their accidental deaths. After giving a go at living in the city Mary is pleased to know here friend Rosie wants her to come back and live at her farm. When she meets Borgaz as he is going a survey he is attracted to Mary and wants to help her and protect her. Independent and down on her luck she is determined to be self sufficient without a sexy red alien who still has nightmares about the war. He wants a mate but believes he is too scarred literally but can’t stay away from Mary as their friendship gets steamy!
