I have recently found books 2-8 and I've never read the series before. I hate to be the person to ask (but I seem to have trouble finding the first), is it okay if I start with the 2nd book? (I suppose once I find the first I can always go back and read it)

A friend who's read it multiple times said book 2 is the best of the lot, so I just skimmed the Wikipedia summary of the 1st book and read the 2nd one, and it was fine. (less)
