I have recently found books 2-8 and I've never read the series before. I hate to be the person to ask (but I seem to have trouble finding the first), is it okay if I start with the 2nd book? (I suppose once I find the first I can always go back and read it)

Sequoyah No, I suggest reading The Eye of the World first. Try your local library. Mine has the entire series.
Hélio Parente I would highly suggest that you start by the first one, the stories are directly linked and you might not understand everything in the second or grasp the full dimension of things :)
Robert Gibson Like a few of the others mentioned, I'd recommend starting with the first, The Eye of the World - it's the best. Books 2-5 are very good; but it becomes evident that in four or 5 Robert Jordan didn't know how to end this series. I think he lost track of his outline, so just kept writing, like Moorcock's Elric books. The makers of The Wheel of Time minseries actually did a decent job with season 1, which is The Eye of the World in 8 episodes. As Jordan gradually introduces us to the Aiel, Rand's destiny, Mat, Perrin, Moiraine, Egwene, Nynaeve, Lan, the wise ones of the Aiel, the Seanchan, etc., he really had a good outline to help himself keep track of the story and keep the timeline pretty close in books 1-5 or 6. He starts to feel pretty lost and unsure by book 7. Book 8 and 9 start to lose direction and I think the reader, like I did, will mostly become disinterested in the story, as Robert Jordan had lost direction at that point. So, in answer to your question, I'd read book 1 The Eye of the World before continuing into The Great Hunt and the rest. Good luck. I wish I still had The Eye of the World - I'd mail it to you. Fun story.... Be patient with all the Aes Sedai training stuff and the relationships of the individual characters. He splits up the characters that are mostly together in books 1 and 2, after that their stories separate more and chapters, most of a few of the books won't even mention them(characters) much. I'm looking forward to the next season of The Wheel of Time, to see if it's fairly well done. Mat's story is compelling and it will be interesting how they render all of the storylines. Happy New Year!!
Laura I really only wanted a taste of this series - I have no intention of reading the whole thing. A friend who's read it multiple times said book 2 is the best of the lot, so I just skimmed the Wikipedia summary of the 1st book and read the 2nd one, and it was fine.
Harrison There are questions answered in the second book that are asked in the first. And you probably won't understand the story as much as if you read the first book, well first!
Jessie The first book is so offing good, don't skip it. All the characters being introduced the relationships...
Cecelia Hopkins-Drewer Reading in order is best. However, reading out of order works too. I accessed them from the library as the library was able to get them in for me. I also bought a random pack, but don't own them all... so when I reread, I cannot do it exactly in order. If I remember correctly, there is a prologue that helps. That said, even in order, the threads of the tale are complex. You will enjoy the reading, which is an experience in itself, but he has multiple threads running through each book.
