In this book, the protagonist and other humans have been captured by an alien species. There are many parallels between the experiences of the humans in this story (who have very little choice or control over their situation) and the experiences of African people (and their descendants) who were brought to the United States as slaves. So in that sense, it deals with racism and related issues. The main character is also a black American woman, which doesn't directly affect the story but might influence and add context to some of her thoughts and decisions.(less)
