Frogmaniac asked L.E. Modesitt Jr.:

I have a question regarding Cyador. In Magi'i of Cyador we see that the ancient society of Cyador was not nearly as sexist as it seems in the earlier books. Is this an actual cultural change in Cyador, or did the perspective soften as you told the story from their point of view?

L.E. Modesitt Jr. No. The earlier culture of Cyador was far less sexist than the later culture. Part of the reason why I told it that way was because, particularly in many western nations, there's an underlying assumption that cultures get less sexist as they develop... and history shows that such is not necessarily the case. Cultures change, and some become less sexist, and some become more sexist. From what I've seen, cultures and societies become more conservative and more sexist when they feel threatened or when conditions are worsening. Cyador is definitely declining when it becomes more sexist.
