Why did you make the decision to write fantasy and sci-fi from such a moralistic standpoint?

L.E. Modesitt Jr. I'd have to rephrase your question to answer it accurately, I write about ethical issues and how they impact people and societies. The impacts are similar to the impacts we see in our own world day-to-day, year-to-year, even century to century. Using the term "moralistic viewpoint" incorporates the implication of a single "moral" viewpoint, but across the body of my work, a discerning reader can find that the "moral viewpoint" of a protagonist in one book is considerably different from the protagonist in another. The one consistency that I will admit to is that from a practical point I believe, and my characters tend to illustrate, extremism in any form of belief system paves the road to disaster.

As for the emphasis on ethics... research has shown that human beings do have a rough internal ethical system. I just write about how individuals handle ethical problems.
