Anna asked:

Am I the only one that thought this book was awful? I keep seeing all these great reviews and how this is "King's best work", but I just don't get it?? If this is his best, then I'm afraid to read anything else he's written.

Ã…ke Malmgren King writes for those with a vivid visual imagination. That's what those "pointless details" are for - they are the brush strokes he uses for painting the pictures directly into your mind.
If your imagination doesn't work like that, his style of writing probably isn't for you. If you think in words rather than pictures, there may just be too many of them and the story will seem to drag on and meander.

But for the likes of me he's a genius, and reading or listening to his books is way better than watching a movie. I love this book, as do I most of his works, because his style meshes so perfectly with my mind.
Jake It is not my favorite King story but it is, I believe, the best prose of his long career. Every single page was just a beautiful example of the English language. If you enjoy language and prose than this is the book for you. If you want an action/thriller where you don't have to really think, maybe stick with James Patterson...
Nicole You're entitled to your opinion.

11/22/63, in my opinion, is his best work that I've read to date. It was published 12 years after Bag of Bones. I enjoyed Bag of Bones, but King isn't for everyone. No author is for everyone.
Pattie Anderson I really loved the prose in the first half, though I thought it was too long and parts of the story didn't make sense. It fell apart for me in the second half. It is my least favorite of Stephen King's books that I have read so far, but even his bad books are better than many writers' "good" books.
Dennis Anthony I didn't like it either. Still, a bad King book is better than most books. Try 11/22/63 or the Mr. Mercedes trilogy. The guy's a hell of a writer. But he was snoozing during this one.
Dawn R I agree! I am reading it currently because a good friend of mine read it multiple times and its her favorite book. It is taking forever to get thru with too many pointless details. I am going to finish it this weekend but come on already! Ive read a few others from him and they were better but this is just not working for me.
Mike Marsbergen Nobody will ever agree on what King's best book is, so don't put much stock into that.
Olivia Starks I hated it...putting it nicely
Roger I've read many of SK's books and really enjoyed them. Night Shift actually got me to read when I was fourteen. I'm currently listening to Bag of Bones, but he just seems to go on and on and on, and not really moving the story along - not enough for me anyway. Maybe it's because I'm listening to it? But I've listened to a couple of other of his and they move along pretty well. But while on my way to work, I yanked the cord from my phone. I couldn't take it anymore. Maybe I'll get a kindle version and try reading it on my Paper White.
Benita Alli I thought the book was an amazing story! But, i'm sorry that it wasn't appealing to you. @Anna
Juha-Matti Johansson I can understand that people don't like Kings way of writing and explaining everything. I myself love this book myself. If you don't like horror you could try mr mercedes or green mile.
