asked:
I'm the only one who really feel pissed off about the "story of a murdered"? I really see Grenouille as it is: a genious

The way this book is read....with the focus on the poor sad, unloved genius....that was a necessary reminder. Okay....feel sorry for him, see how brilliant he is at what he does, but for goodness sake, don't leave your humanity behind when moved by a powerful book.....the girls, undeserving of their fate....you're just overlooking them....as ingredients....few glad I'm not surprised a man asked this question...

the problem i think with Grenouille is that we tend to want to associate genius with goodness. There's a cognitive disconnect with a character like Grenouille then. book (and movie) are brilliant...i love the way scent is summoned in the book through words and the movie through visuals.

Definitely, there is so much more to Grenouille! He is a fascinating character. However, I think it's clever to use such a title, because people end up being surprised by their empathy with someone they are supposed to despise on face-value alone. You could also see it in a similar way to the depiction of Frankenstein's monster, in that the creation is referred to as a 'monster' right from the outset but as we read his narrative we change our opinion and see that he is no monster and only needed understanding and love. In fact, we learn that society and the doctor himself are the real monsters. This is exactly the same as Grenouille and his surroundings! And technically speaking, he IS a murderer, it's just that there is more to him than that. The title invites us to understand his nature, and therefore the reasons why he is a murderer.

He doesn't view the women as victims, they are ingredients that cause him mild inconvenience.

Yes he is a genious , however he did kill people , innocent young girls , yes the book did title him as a freak from the start and that was wrong and not fair but that doesn't make his crimes any less ugly and unhuman ,therefore he's maybe a genious but he's definitely a murderer
Christin
He kills people.

You know a person can be ...both, right? Like, sure, he's definitely a genius! But also? To the girls whose lives he ended, the murdering was probably the most important part. And I kind of can't believe I have to explain that to you.

He definitely is brilliant but his character does not allow us to care about it. He himself also doesn't seem to care about it at all. It's consuming his soul and he anyways couldn't and wouldn't do anything about it! He really was an insane genious!

In my opinion, i think that casting the story in this way is exactly what makes it such a marvel, it is how you take what you read and what it means to you.. i absolutely looove grenouille's character and the light in which the author presented him is what makes him more vibrant and compelling.

Yes!
First of all it's a spoiler.
When I read the book I was luck enough to know nothing about it.
The murder came as a surprise in the book, I didn't know it was going to happen.
Beside the book is not at all about murder, it's about smells, capturing them and create smells.

If Bertrand Russel killed twenty-five fourteen year-old girls we'd probably call him a murderer, and not so much a math genius. Also The Uni-bomber was considered a math genius too. So yeah, I think you're the only one pissed off about that..
Sarah Vernall
... except that he is a murderer? A serial killer.

Not I.
I really have no qualms about name the story about a murderer being named just that. I cheated though. I continued to read and found this;
"But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there"

Yes I agree but I would not call him a genius, (talented yes). Moreover the failure of his execution and his demise were not in anyway credible and I felt that this ruined the whole story.

Evidently, Grenouille is a genius with a rare gift, and quite arguably one of the most intriguing characters I have ever come across. But unfortunately, he is still a murderer.

I see what you mean. I was pretty upset when he was titled as an 'abomination' right from the beginning. It didn't allow the readers to make their won judgments and I don't think of him as an abomination at all. Yes, the way he is put in a negative light pissed me off too :(
