However, I think it's clever to use such a title, because people end up being surprised by their empathy with someone they are supposed to despise on face-value alone. You could also see it in a similar way to the depiction of Frankenstein's monster, in that the creation is referred to as a 'monster' right from the outset but as we read his narrative we change our opinion and see that he is no monster and only needed understanding and love. In fact, we learn that society and the doctor himself are the real monsters. This is exactly the same as Grenouille and his surroundings! And technically speaking, he IS a murderer, it's just that there is more to him than that. The title invites us to understand his nature, and therefore the reasons why he is a murderer. (less)
