That's so hard...there are SO many books.
The one book that I've read countless times is The Harlan Ellison Hornbook, which is a collection of essays from the LA Free Press. The essays vary from his father dying, to a woman who broke his heart (again and again) to his favorite Chinese restaurant. There's something manic and magical about the writing, the anger and vulnerability--this was the book that I'd read when my world was on fire. It kept me going.
