“Christ, don't go to the Haunted Houses with Ally and Indy. A few years ago, Indy went berserk and broke through the hay bales they had set up to make the haunted trail and headed into the cornfields. All the employees chased after her but since they were dressed like monsters, Indy lost her mind. They had to call the cops to settle her down."
I lost him at "cornfields".
"Cornfields?" I whispered.
"Yeah."
"They have a haunted trail through cornfields?"
"Yeah, up in Thornton. Best Haunted House in Denver. Indy and Ally go every year. Why?"
"Cornfields freak me out," I admitted.
Hank was silent.
Then, he said, "You're from Indiana. How in the fuck can cornfields freak you out?"
"Cornfields don't freak me out. Cornfields at night freak me out. Haunted cornfields at night freak me out."
"You been to many haunted cornfields?"
"Dude," I said low. "All cornfields are haunted. Trust me. I know... They whisper to you.”

“One piece at a time,' the angel hissed, dangling something papery and drenched in dark liquid over Hank's whirling vision.

Hank felt his eyes widen. His skin!

“I'm only trying to make you see beyond men's acts to their motives. A man can appear to be a part of something not-so-good on its face, but don't take it upon yourself to judge him unless you know his motives as well. A man can be boiling inside, but he knows a mild answer works better than showing his rage. A man can condemn his enemies, but it's wiser to know them.”

“The food is ready,鈥 Zil announced to loud cheers.
鈥淏ut we have something more important to do, first, before we can eat.鈥
Groans.
鈥淲e have to carry out some justice.鈥
That earned a silent stare until Turk and Hank started raising their hands and yelling, showing the crowd how to act.
鈥淭his mutant, this nonhuman scum here, this freak Hunter鈥︹€ Zil pointed, arm stretched out, at his captive. 鈥淭his chud deliberately murdered my best friend, Harry.鈥
鈥淣a troo,鈥 Hunter said. His mouth still didn鈥檛 work right. Brain damage, Zil supposed, from the little knock on his head. Half of Hunter鈥檚 face drooped like it wasn鈥檛 quite attached right. It made it easier for the crowd of kids to sneer at him, and Hunter, yelling in his drooling retard voice, wasn鈥檛 helping his case.
鈥淗e鈥檚 a killer!鈥 Zil cried suddenly, smacking his fist into his palm.
鈥淎 freak! A mutant!鈥 he cried. 鈥淎nd we know what they鈥檙e like, right? They always have enough food. They run everything. They鈥檙e in charge and we鈥檙e all starving. Is that some kind of coincidence? No way.鈥
鈥淣a troo,鈥 Hunter moaned again.
鈥淭ake him!鈥 Zil cried to Antoine and Hank. 鈥淭ake him, the murdering mutant scum!鈥
They seized Hunter by the arms. He could walk, but only by dragging one leg. They half carried, half marched him across the plaza. They dragged him up the church steps.
鈥淣ow,鈥 Zil said, 鈥渉ere is how we鈥檙e going to do this.鈥 He waved his hand toward the rope that Lance was unspooling back through the plaza.
An expectant pause. A dangerous, giddy feeling. The smell of the meat had them all crazy. Zil could feel it.
鈥淵ou all want some of this delicious venison?鈥
They roared their assent.
鈥淭hen you鈥檒l all grab on to the rope.”

“The intruders spoke no words as they rushed in. Five boys carrying baseball bats and tire irons. They wore an assortment of Halloween masks and stocking masks.
But Derek knew who they were.
鈥淣o! No!鈥 he cried.
All five boys wore bulky shooter鈥檚 earmuffs. They couldn鈥檛 hear him. But more importantly, they couldn鈥檛 hear Jill.
One of the boys stayed in the doorway. He was in charge. A runty kid named Hank. The stocking pulled down over his face smashed his features into Play-Doh, but it could only be Hank.
One of the boys, fat but fast-moving and wearing an Easter Bunny mask, stepped to Derek and hit him in the stomach with his aluminum baseball bat.
Derek dropped to his knees.
Another boy grabbed Jill. He put his hand over her mouth. Someone produced a roll of duct tape.
Jill screamed. Derek tried to stand, but the blow to his stomach had winded him. He tried to stand up, but the fat boy pushed him back down.
鈥淒on鈥檛 be stupid, Derek. We鈥檙e not after you.鈥
The duct tape went around and around Jill鈥檚 mouth. They worked by flashlight. Derek could see Jill鈥檚 eyes, wild with terror. Pleading silently with her big brother to save her.
When her mouth was sealed, the thugs pulled off their shooter鈥檚 earmuffs.
Hank stepped forward. 鈥淒erek, Derek, Derek,鈥 Hank said, shaking his head slowly, regretfully. 鈥淵ou know better than this.鈥
鈥淟eave her alone,鈥 Derek managed to gasp, clutching his stomach, fighting the urge to vomit.
鈥淪he鈥檚 a freak,鈥 Hank said.
鈥淪he鈥檚 my little sister. This is our home.鈥
鈥淪he鈥檚 a freak,鈥 Hank said. 鈥淎nd this house is east of First Avenue. This is a no-freak zone.鈥
鈥淢an, come on,鈥 Derek pleaded. 鈥淪he鈥檚 not hurting anyone.鈥
鈥淚t鈥檚 not about that,鈥 a boy named Turk said. He had a weak leg, a limp that made it impossible not to recognize him. 鈥淔reaks with freaks, normals with normals. That鈥檚 the way it has to be.鈥
鈥淎ll she does is鈥斺€
Hank鈥檚 slap stung. 鈥淪hut up. Traitor. A normal who stands up for a freak gets treated like a freak. Is that what you want?鈥
鈥淏esides,鈥 the fat boy said with a giggle, 鈥渨e鈥檙e taking it easy on her. We were going to fix her so she could never sing again. Or talk. If you know what I mean.鈥
He pulled a knife from a sheath in the small of his back. 鈥淒o you, Derek? Do you understand?鈥
Derek鈥檚 resistance died.
鈥淭he Leader showed mercy,鈥 Turk said. 鈥淏ut the Leader isn鈥檛 weak. So this freak either goes west, over the border right now. Or鈥︹€ He let the threat hang there.
Jill鈥檚 tears flowed freely. She could barely breathe because her nose was running. Derek could see that by the way she sucked tape into her mouth, trying for air. She would suffocate if they didn鈥檛 let her go soon.
鈥淟et me at least get her doll.”

“Don鈥檛 tell Tex you鈥檙e gonna buy a franchise, he鈥檒l go ballistic.鈥
What he said made me stop and I stared up at him stupidly in the dark.
鈥淲hat鈥檚 wrong with franchises?鈥 I asked.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e the death of America,鈥 Uncle Tex boomed from the next room and both Hank and I froze. 鈥淣ow, will you two keep it the fuck down. The walls are paper thin and you鈥檙e disturbin鈥 the cats!”
