Huntley Fitzpatrick
“I cannot help but wonder if any parents ever actually schedule in adolescent drama on their day planners. Looks like a slow week, Sarah. I guess I can pencil in your eating disorder.”
Huntley Fitzpatrick, My Life Next Door

Anna Godbersen
“It is often advantageous to forget. Forget your wincing humiliations, forget life's blows, and get on. For blocks in every direction, down every street in the city, people not yet old enough to have lines on their foreheads were laughing away memory, warmly ensconced in shrines of forgetfulness. Those who followed the word of God and those who preferred what the priests called "hoodoo" alike. People everywhere forgetting with drink or forgetting with religion or forgetting with the numbing quality of their many heaps of things. They looked forward and imagined rosy tomorrows, and gave up whatever horrors heckled their dreams, and listened to the pretty stories of whomever ruled their pulpit.”
Anna Godbersen, Bright Young Things

A.S. King
“I'd rather feel something for real than pretend it's not what it is. Which Zen guy said "If you want to drown, do not torture yourself with shallow water"?”

“While Owen and Miles talk sports, I people watch. And this is what I see: teenagers trying to act like adults. Or how they think adults act. But mostly they look ridiculous, and I wonder what they don't want to do something that's more fun than drinking, smoking, flirting, and making out. Why are those activities considered to be fun?”
Melody Carlson, Just Another Girl

“He felt a little lost, after that experience. Lost as the girls on their knees. It was a never-ending story of young girls losing themselves, such that they were no longer humans with any souls or characters, but pretty girls with fat asses and nice tits.”

Mark Rice
“Things began to go wrong when I was seventeen. My band鈥檚 twenty-year-old lead guitarist earned seven years in jail for a drug-fuelled spree of violence. The other band members were quick to let go of their musical dreams, but I never did. They did the 鈥榤ature鈥 thing: after writing off the band as a teenage fantasy, they got real jobs and made some money. They called it growing up. I called it giving up.”
Mark Rice, Metallic Dreams

Abhaidev
“All great men have been rebels. All great men were free. It is the only formula for greatness. To be stuck in the state of adolescence.”

“All Julie has to do is explain to her friends that she's using it to individually seal each item that she throws out."
"Then they'd think she was a geek," I said.
"She will thank me later," Monk said.
"Why would she thank you for being considered a geek?"
"Don't you know anything about teenage life?" Monk said. "It's a badge of respect."
"It is?"
"I was one," he said.
"You don't say."
"A very special one. I was crowned King of the Geeks, not once, but every single year of high school," Monk said. "It's a record that remains unbroken in my school to this day."
"Were there a lot of students who wanted to be King of the Geeks?"
"It's like being homecoming king, only better. You don't have to go to any dances," Monk said. "You aren't even invited.”

Dan Chaon, Stay Awake

Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
“Sexually active? Sexually active? Patrick and I hadn't even learned the fine points of kissing yet!
I marched on down. 'For your information,' I said from the doorway, as both Dad and Lester jerked to attention, 'I am about as sexually active as a bag of spinach, and if you want to keep me on the porch and not out in the park somewhere behind the bushes, you'll keep the stupid porch light off when I come home with a boy.”
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, Alice on the Outside

Eric Bishop-Potter
“Do you ever wear leather?" the guy asks.
"What?"
"Leather. Do you like leather?"
"It doesn't exactly wipe me out."
"I like to see boys in leather."
I look at him cool. "Okay," I say, "what is it you want and how much are you willing to pay for it?"
"I've got a leather jacket upstairs...Would you put it on?"
"Just put it on?"
"I'll go and get it."
He leaves the horror hole and returns a few minutes later holding a leather flying jacket with a lambswool collar. There are tears in the jacket's sleeves, and the lambswool is yellow with age. John Wayne could've worn it in one of those crappy war films he made. "Put it on," the guy says.
I give him a spiky smile and put on the jacket. "Okay, where's the plane, and what time's take-off?"
"Drop your jeans and turn around.”
Eric Bishop-Potter

“If what you are saying is having the opposite effect on the listener, you should stop saying it. Most parents don't understand this. They keep their taperecorder on until their rebellious children go completely out of hand.”
Shunya

Julian Barnes
“This was hopeless. In a novel, Adrian wouldn鈥檛 just have accepted things as they were put to him. What was the point of having a situation worthy of fiction if the protagonist didn鈥檛 behave as he would have done in a book?”
Julian Barnes, The Sense of an Ending

Tim Trent
“This is meant to be special, this is. I鈥檓 a teenager, I鈥檝e just left my old school and I鈥檓 starting my new one in September, and I鈥檓 in some God forsaken hole in a rotten caravan with no friends and it鈥檚 my birthday.”
Tim Trent, Queer Me!: Halfway Between Flying and Crying

“Even though I feel them for him, I had to hold back, to know for sure. I just had to hold back. That鈥檚 we he drifted off鈥 Why did he fall asleep on me? Was it because I鈥檓 boring or is he just exposed? My head thumping still, I know was not thinking clearly, so I staggered back down the long hallway back into the dwindling party. I see one of the double-hung windows. Without anyone observing I reach my hand forward and place it on the big old sill, there is an electric candle with a night light bulb sitting in the middle. I crack the window to let out the smoke and smells out, and to get some much-needed air.
A fine stream of rain-sh snow is gusting in on my face, it鈥檚 cold but feels so-so good, even though it鈥檚 winter. Enjoying the freezing air and the sensation of a hundred of little sparkly flacks.
I squeezed my eyes closed tightly and promised myself that I鈥檒l never forget the moment I just had with him. Funny I wanted to forget about all the sound, the tacky lights, and smalls of my friends and their mindless hilarity that they're tittering about. For some reason鈥 I wanted to forget about all the heated hookups and the many bodies that were around me. What surpasses me the most about this, is that this is what I lived for and sacrificed so much to gain鈥 to have the gathering and wanting of others that are popular, it's everything I ever wanted. Yet it seemed at that moment, I was better off before not having it. Before I became this girl鈥 the girl that I鈥檓 not鈥 not truly on the inside.
When I open my eyes, I get the shock of my life. My little sis is standing in the doorway, staring at me. With that look holding me. She must have snuck out and followed me to this party with some of her older girlfriends, she has been messing with the wrong crew lately. I knew what happened to her tonight just by looking at her face, I knew. And if I find that boy, I鈥檒l rip his sagging balls off! Then again, I was not much older than her when I went to my first party. I was horrified, she was doing what I did, back when I felt like I was dying inside. I was dead long before I wound up dead. I just wonder if she feels the same鈥? I wonder if I am the cause. How would let her in鈥 and how did she get so popular already?”

Anna Downes
“But things had changed shortly after he turned eleven. He clammed up, got angry, became shifty and secretive. And then suddenly it was like we were speaking entirely different languages. I'd say something and he'd look baffled. Then he'd reply, and it would be my turn to be confused. Being around him became like hosting a foreign exchange student, but without the pleasantries. Or an end date.”
Anna Downes, The Shadow House
