“Because maybe I don't want to leave the planet invisible. Maybe I need at least one person to remember something about me.”

Seanan McGuire

You were sleeping so peacefully that I was loath to wake you. Duke Torquill, after demanding to know what I was doing in your apartment, has requested that I inform you of his intent to visit after 鈥榯ending to some business at the Queen鈥檚 Court.鈥 I recommend wearing something clinging, as that may distract him from whatever he wishes to lecture you about this time. Hopefully, it鈥檚 your manners.

You are truly endearing when you sleep. I attribute this to the exotic nature of seeing you in a state of silence.

Seanan McGuire, A Local Habitation

“He's going to be okay," said Quentin. "He has to. He's Tybalt. You'd be all weird and irritating if he wasn't around."

"Weird and irritating?" I raised an eyebrow. "What gives you that idea?"

Quentin shrugged. "That's already how you get when he isn't around.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

“Who would come for her?" he snarled, rallying.
Behind me, a voice shouted, "Tybalt, King of Cats. My claim precedes yours.”
Seanan McGuire, An Artificial Night

“You died here," I said quietly.

"October -"

"I wasn't here, and the girl I'm supposed to be finding was, and you died ." I looked up at him, glaring through the tears in my eyes. I left my fingers balanced on the floor, letting his blood sing its song of pain and longing. Longing to live; refusal to let go of the world. Maybe that's what differentiates the Kings and Queens of Cats from the rest of Faerie. They have a cat's stubbornness and the power to back it up. So when death says, "Go," they just refuse.

My heart hurt. My heart hurt so badly, and I was still trying to recover from Connor, and oh, Titania, I couldn't do this again. The thought startled me. I froze where I was, still glaring.

Tybalt sighed. "I know." he hesitated before adding, "This is not the time, and this is not the place, and my nephew needs us. But I ask you to consider this. I got better. I will always get better." He hesitated again - possibly the first time I'd ever seen him pause more than once after he'd decided he was going to say something.

Finally, he said, "Some of us, October, will not leave you.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

“He sounded so tired and so earnest. I worried my lips between my teeth before asking, "Does this have anything to do with what you told me before?"

Tybalt blinked. Then he snorted a brief laugh, and asked, "October, in the years since your return ... has anything not been in some way related to what I told you before? You handed me a hope chest in a dark alley. You took my heart as collateral, and you've never returned it.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

Margaret Atwood
“How shrunk, how dwindled, in our times
Creation's mighty seed -
For Man has broke the Fellowship
With murder, lust, and greed.”
Margaret Atwood

“You can't save everyone and leave yourself lost, October. It isn't fair. Not to you and not to the people who care about you."

"I'm not lost Tybalt," I said. It was oddly hard to meet his eyes now that they registered as human. His irises were supposed to be malachite green, not muddy hazel, and his pupils were supposed to be oval, not round. "I know exactly where I am."

A smile crossed his face. "If I believed that, I would walk away and never darken your door again. I can forgive you your foolishness only because I know how lost you are. But one day, you'll have to come back home. When you do, I hope you'll find me waiting.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

Jennifer Lynn Barnes
“Little-known fact about cheerleaders: They keep schedules that would make grown marines cry.”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Killer Spirit

Seanan McGuire
“How did you find me anyway."

"For all that I must keep reminding you that I am not a bloodhound, it's true that on occasion, having a sensitive nose is a useful thing. I followed the smell of you." Tybalt sighed, looking exaggeratedly put-upon. "If you must be ferried back to your people, I suppose I can oblige. But only because you asked me so very nicely, and promised me a kiss.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

“I'd sold my soul to get out of detention.”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Perfect Cover

Aaron Sorkin
“Government should be a place where people can come together, and no one gets left behind. No one鈥ets left behind. An instrument of good.”
Aaron Sorkin

Seanan McGuire
“Being a King sort of sucks," I said.

Quentin wrinkled his nose, "So does your outfit."

"Blood is in this season.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

Seanan McGuire
“My dear October, we are bound by an enchanted rose made from the hair of a Duchess, and my blood is covering your hand. You can learn anything you wish to know about me merely by licking you fingers." Tybalt laughed a little. "Yes, you may ask me a question.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

Carol Rifka Brunt
“Finn said art isn't about drawing or painting a perfect bowl of fruit. It's about ideas. And you, he said, have enough good ideas to last a lifetime.”
Carol Rifka Brunt, Tell the Wolves I'm Home

Jennifer Lynn Barnes
“After getting dressed at warp speed, I actually managed to drive all the way to high school before I realized I'd forgotten my morning coffee. Mystery, intrigue, and naked dreams aside, that didn't bode well for my chances at making it through the morning without killing myself. Or someone else.”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Killer Spirit

Margaret Atwood
“Nature full strength is more than we can take, Adam One used to say. It's a potent hallucinogen, a soporific, for the untrained Soul. We're no longer at home in it. We need to dilute it. We can't drink it straight. And God is the same. Too much God and you overdose. God needs to be filtered.”
Margaret Atwood, The Year of the Flood

Jennifer Lynn Barnes
“Second thoughts? About the Squad?"
She nodded.
"I'm starting to think the CIA is seriously deranged for letting us do this," I told her, "but that doesn't mean I don't want to do it." I paused. "Actually, the fact that we probably shouldn't be doing this kind of makes me want to do it more."
Zee snorted. "Adrenaline junkie," she accused.”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Killer Spirit

Ridley Pearson
“Nugget?" said Micah, offering a lump to Toby.
"Thanks," said Toby. He took a bite and chewed thoughtfully.
"I think maybe it is a squirrel." He said.”
Ridley Pearson, Science Fair

Jennifer Lynn Barnes
“To my surprise, Brooke smiled, and I realized that even though two of the other teams had managed to bug their marks' cell phones, the information Tara and I had received might just prove it self to be even more useful.
Take that Chloe!”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Killer Spirit

“For a moment, there was silnece, and then at Brooke's nod, the rest of the Squad, minus me, chimed in. "Yes, sir."
I said nothing. For one thing, I wasn't exactly keen on speaking in unison, and for another, I wasn't about to make any promises I couldn't keep.
"Toby."
I jumped in my seat. The Voice actually knew my name. And somehow, he had the freaky ability to ascertain that of all of us, I was the one who hadn't responded.
"Do you understand?"
I contemplated telling him what I didn't understand was his familial relationshiops, but stayed momentarily silent, causing everyone within a three-foot radius to kick me under the table at once.
"Ow!" I cleared my throat. "I mean, yes." I didn't throw the sir on the end, but apparently, that was good enough for the Voice.
"Excellent. Report in tonight, and we'll have more information for you all tomorrow. And girl?"
"Yes?"
"Congratulations on the homecoming nominations. We're all very proud.”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Killer Spirit

Jennifer Lynn Barnes
“Vote for Toby. Vote for Toby. Hey, baby. How you doin'?" Slight pause. "Vote for Toby.”
Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Killer Spirit

Alyssa Rose Ivy
“No, I won鈥檛 go to hell, but I鈥檒l take a message.”

Mark Haddon
“I think I would make a very good astronaut.
To be a good astronaut you have to be intelligent and I鈥檓 intelligent. You also have to understand how machines work and I鈥檓 good at understanding how machines work. You also have to be someone who would like being on their own in a tiny spacecraft thousands and thousands of miles away from the surface of the earth and not panic or get claustrophobia or homesick or insane. And I really like little spaces, so long as there is no one else in them with me. Sometimes when I want to be on my own I get into the airing cupboard outside the bathroom and slide in beside the boiler and pull the door closed behind me and sit there and think for hours and it makes me feel very calm.
So I would have to be an astronaut on my own, or have my own part of the space craft which no one else could come into.
And also there are no yellow things or brown things in a space craft, so that would be okay too.
And I would have to talk to other people from Mission Control, but we would do that through a radio linkup and a TV monitor, so they wouldn鈥檛 be like real people who are strangers, but it would be like playing a computer game.
Also I wouldn鈥檛 be homesick at all because I鈥檇 be surrounded by things I like, which are machines and computers and outer space. And I would be able to look out of a little window in the spacecraft and know that there was no one near me for thousands and thousands of miles, which is what I sometimes pretend at night in the summer when I go and lie on the lawn and look up at the sky and I put my hands round the sides of my face so that I can鈥檛 see the fence and the chimney and the washing line and I can pretend I鈥檓 in space.
And all I could see would be stars. And stars are the places where molecules that life is made of were constructed billions of years ago. For example, all the iron in your blood which keeps you from being anemic was made in a star.
And I would like it if I could take Toby with me into space, and that might be allowed because they sometimes do take animals into space for experiments, so if I could think of a good experiment you could do with a rat that didn鈥檛 hurt the rat, I could make them let me take Toby.
But if they didn鈥檛 let me I would still go because it would be a Dream Come True.”
Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Timoth茅e de Fombelle
“The sole of the foot is sacred for the Grass people. It's called the "sole of the foot" because it's the sole (or only) body part that enjoys the constant relationship with the surface of plants.”
Timothee de Fombelle, Toby and the Secrets of the Tree

Austin Grossman
“The voice came from the other side of the divider, an older man, bald, who wore a leather vest over a dark blue button-down shirt, like a Radio Shack manager who moonlighted as a forest brigand.”
Austin Grossman, You

Seanan McGuire
“Quentin didn't bother with the preliminaries. He grabbed a paper cup and trotted over to me, holding it at arm's length. "Here," he said. "Coffee.""And thus am I reminded why I allow you to live.”
Seanan McGuire, Ashes of Honor

K.M. Shea
“Patients, beings who want to be rehabilitated, send me questions See? I answer them real fast, 1 2 3 done Like so You get?' Toby said, his pale green fingers clattering across the keyboard.

'I think so,' I said, shifting in my chair.

'Okay hear we go First question: I just moved to a new city and there's a school next door All the kids, every last student, wear the same clothes Are they all related Is this one of those mafia families I need to be careful around You know the answer? Toby asked, swiveling to face me.

'Perhaps,' I said after thinking a moment. It took a second to distinguish when the question ended and when Toby's remarks started.

'You sure, I can check real quick 1 2 3 I check that fast,' Toby said, his words zooming out of his mouth while Google search engine popped up on his computer screen.”

R.L. Merrill
