I found myself frequently lost in scenes described in such intricate detail that they seemed to breathe with life. The pictures painted of the gothic castle Gormenghast and of the surrounding area were so vividly realised, so truly and thoroughly depicted it could sometimes seem that you really were seeing the picture with your own eyes, particularly any image involving the elements, the sun, or the moon. Peake was a man obviously dedicated to his style and that is truly what makes this novel stand out. It is poetry in novel form, music on a page, and I will be a happy reader if I come across many others with such talent with a pen. Breathtakingly well written, for all lovers of fantasy as a literary art form, this is truly the novel for you.
However, due to this, the book can sometimes suffer from being long-winded and the style dominates the main portion of the novel, relegating the plot to a supporting role. This can make the novel hard going at times, but nevertheless it is certainly well worth the read....more
