It is truly a proper novel - engaging, well written, Heminwayesque but totally original. Moreover, it is an autobiography that reads like fiction. Beryl Markham was raised in Africa when the British were in their heyday there - her father ran a "farm" and she ran free. Later, she became a private pilot - traversing the whole of eastern Africa. This is such an engaging book - I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys novelists such as Steinbeck, Hemmingway and Fitzgerald - as she is, in fact, their contemporary - as well as anyone who enjoys a well written and engaging novel. ...more

Then, very abruptly, it is as if Allende ran out of things to say, or rather, became distracted by another project. The book ends TERRIBLY! The last 1/4 is a slog to get through and, becuase the first part is so wonderful, I kept reading and thinking "surely, this will work out." But no joy. I would suggest reading it BUT don't hope for a great wrap up at the end. I have to say - it was a BIT much for your average 8th grader, but still a very good read. WARNING: Not for the faint-of-heart. Again, this book makes me wonder who is supplying our news and history. Very, very great book and not anti-semitic at all. I read it looking for the anti-semitism and only found a fair and accurate explanation of facts. If Israel has done some things they ought not be proud of and someone makes note of those things, that is NOT anti-semitic, it is simply the truth. ...more
