This is an epistolary novel (I hate that format) about two gross, weird people, at least one of them severely mentally ill. I have no idea how their relationship came to be the way it did, because it was like zero to 100 with no development. Nothing they did makes sense. Not the things that were asked (then later regretted) and not the agreement to do the things asked.
Because everything in this book is for pure shock value. It's not even clever. The only good thing is that it's an extremely quick read....more

It reminded me of the writing in Captive Prince, only with more description. Gradually I found myself drawn into the story, and I finished the book quickly. Despite the dry style, I had some really good visuals in my mind, and I think this would make a really interesting movie, with wet and steamy streets lit with neon.
Nenia, Queen of Bodice Rippers, sent me this, because she knows how much I enjoy vampire stories. So now I will pass it on as well, to the illustrious Vampire Ninja!...more

I thought the dialogue was pretty good, and even though there was A LOT going on with the art, I didn't mind it.
However, even though I like the idea of the story and thought it was interesting, I feel like it needed to go into more depth and detail. I realize this is volume 1, but even so, I really wanted more information in THIS part of the story.
I got this book from the Vampire Ninja, who had it passed on to her. Now it's time for me to pass it on as well!
Buddy read with the amazing Nenia and Sarah, both of whom enjoyed this a book a lot more than I did.
I don't get the hype for this at all.

This book presents a world where sexual slavery is basically everything in every nation. But, you know, some masters are nice, so it's fine. Some of the slaves fight to keep their position (because they're getting older and their masters prefer ~young ones~ and excuse me while I throw up), but others are just so thrilled to be sex slaves. I don't get it. This isn't appealing, even in a fantasy.
I don't like the writing style. It's very dry and too spare for me. It conveyed almost no emotion, so Damen seemed pretty chill with the whole "being forced into slavery" thing. Sometimes I didn't know who was supposed to be talking because often there were no dialogue tags. The pronoun "he" was used a lot, so sometimes I didn't know who "he" referred to. The style also seemed quite affected at times. There were annoying scene breaks and it just seemed... messy. Plus, the short story in the end (about the slaves whose greatest ambition is to become a sex slave) includes the line "It was hot in summer." Wow, thank you for that.
As for the romance... uh, what romance? The strained interactions between Laurent and Damen weren't sexy or titillating in any way. Why would I ship them? Why does Damen even give Laurent the time of day? I could barely picture them as characters. I think everyone in this book is actually constipated, both physically and emotionally.
1.5 stars. I hear the second book is much better, but do I care enough to read it?
My dad gave me this to read because one of his other daughters, my half sister who's way older than me, went to school with Rick Bragg. The first partMy dad gave me this to read because one of his other daughters, my half sister who's way older than me, went to school with Rick Bragg. The first part of the book was interesting to read because it gave me some insight into how my dad grew up, dirt poor in rural Alabama, though my dad's time was a whole generation before Bragg's. The prologue led me to believe I would be learning more about his mother's life and hardships, and that was true for the first part. I didn't care to read about Bragg's adult life or his journalism escapades, so I ended up skimming a good portion of the book. His writing was a little too wordy and sentimental for my tastes. Overall, I'm glad to have read it....more
