Buddy read with the amazing Nenia and Sarah, both of whom enjoyed this a book a lot more than I did.
I don't get the hype for this at all.
This book presents a world where sexual slavery is basically everything in every nation. But, you know, some masters are nice, so it's fine. Some of the slaves fight to keep their position (because they're getting older and their masters prefer ~young ones~ and excuse me while I throw up), but others are just so thrilled to be sex slaves. I don't get it. This isn't appealing, even in a fantasy.
I don't like the writing style. It's very dry and too spare for me. It conveyed almost no emotion, so Damen seemed pretty chill with the whole "being forced into slavery" thing. Sometimes I didn't know who was supposed to be talking because often there were no dialogue tags. The pronoun "he" was used a lot, so sometimes I didn't know who "he" referred to. The style also seemed quite affected at times. There were annoying scene breaks and it just seemed... messy. Plus, the short story in the end (about the slaves whose greatest ambition is to become a sex slave) includes the line "It was hot in summer." Wow, thank you for that.
As for the romance... uh, what romance? The strained interactions between Laurent and Damen weren't sexy or titillating in any way. Why would I ship them? Why does Damen even give Laurent the time of day? I could barely picture them as characters. I think everyone in this book is actually constipated, both physically and emotionally.
1.5 stars. I hear the second book is much better, but do I care enough to read it?

I see a lot of dark romance where the hero is a sex trafficker or supports it and I'm like... m'kay. Just because he has a dark past doesn't mean he had no other choice but to turn to sex trafficking.

After reading a lot of reviews regarding this book, I was having misgivings about it. After reading your review, I'm pretty sure that I'd dislike it.
Thanks Heather!

Agreed! At the very least, there could have been a slave revolt inserted into the pages.

Thanks Heather!"
Thanks! The only reason I read this was because a friend pawned her copy off on me, lol. Then I decided to join the buddy read since I just had it sitting on my shelves.

Thank you! Somehow I've read more books centered on sexual slavery of some kind or another than I care to. There were definitely some uncomfortable scenes in this.

Answer: hell no the second book is not much better! The improvement in the second book is minuscule at best & that's strictly because there's less rapey sex and less weird violence & slightly more focus on plot. But no let me just save you the time and tell you YOU DO NOT CARE ENOUGH TO READ THE NEXT ONE! 💕

There's a train that goes near my house. Maybe I'll just toss it on next time it passes by. ;)

Thanks! I was definitely the odd one out on this BR, lol.

Wouldn't hurt to give it a try. All my friends who read it liked it!

It generally comes across too much like Stockholm Syndrome for me, although I know I read something where it worked. Which have you liked with that trope?
