Captive Prince (Captive Prince, #1)

This was a buddy read with my good friends (and enablers) Nenia, her review; and Heather, her review.
3/06 - This is the second book in a row that has surprised me by being good. I thought the religiosity was going to drive me insane in Redeeming Love, yet I ended up really enjoying it. Here, I thought I was going to have real trouble because of what I believed was going to be a whole lot of rapey behaviour by the 'anti-hero', Laurent towards the 'hero', Damen (aka Damianos) along with numerous other characters. For the first three quarters of the book, every time Laurent and Damen were in the same room I was metaphorically reading with my eyes covered because I was sure that a traumatic rape scene was going to pop out at any second. It was kind of like when you know Freddy's coming because the spooky music is playing, but you don't know exactly when he's going to appear, so you tense up in anticipation of the scare and stay that way until Freddy finally does jump out, except he never really makes an appearance so you just stay tense the whole way through the movie - that's how reading this book made me feel. By the time I finally came to the realisation that no one was going to violently rape Damen and Damen wasn't going to be forced to rape anyone else, I was exhausted and my muscles were aching. There were two rape scenes, but they were not as detailed as I had been worried they would be - (view spoiler) .
My BRing friends will likely be as surprised as I was that I enjoyed this as I have violently not enjoyed other bodice rippers that we've read as a group for the URR group Book of the Month BR. All I can say is that this didn't read like a romance (I've shelved it as fantasy because of where it's set), so I never really saw Laurent and Damen as a couple. All the abuse Laurent (especially the whipping) heaped on Damen didn't feel like it was being perpetrated by a love interest (something that is normally an immediate DNF in a romance), I was able to see Laurent as a villain and Damen as his victim. There were a few times where Laurent showed some vulnerability and I could (just) see how Damen managed to not kill him when he had the chance, but I have no idea whether I'd ever be able to believe in them as love interests (which I know from other's reviews is where this is heading). I may give the second book a go, but as soon as Laurent goes from villain to villainous love interest I'm going to start having problems. How is falling in love with your abuser any different from Stockholm syndrome, where a captive falls in love with their captor (no matter how much grovelling is involved)?

"Enjoying this, but for the whole book my heart has been pounding out of my chest as the tension in the atmosphere gets thicker and thicker, waiting for something dreadful to happen to Damen. Every time it seemed that his time had come, I would have to force myself to not skim over what I thought was going to be a traumatic scene, but then nothing happened, but the tension never eased and my heart kept pounding."

Me too. Glad and amazed.
MAYBE I CAN WIN YOU OVER TO THE (DARK) BODICE RIPPER SIDE YET!"
LOL, I need 'dark-lite' bodice rippers, but at the same time I never felt like this was a romance. I knew that was where the relationship was going, but in this book at least, it never rang true for me. We'll see what I think about the second one (if you and Heather have the time/motivation, that is, couldn't possibly read it all by myself I might get scared).

Did you read Sweet Savage Love by Rosemary Rogers? I have that on my Kindle and want to read it, but it's long, so it's hard to get myself psyched up properly to read something that takes so much time when it's on my computer. I'd be happy to read that with you if you can get it from the library. ;)

You should change your tag line to 'enabler extraordinaire' : 0

Well we can put that on the backburner and read something more inexpensive or free! :DD I'm sure eventually it'll go on sale. I bought it when it dipped down to $3.99

LOL I'm sorry you aren't enjoying Captive Prince, Heather! I look forward to seeing your review of it when you do finish though! This definitely seems to be one of those books people love or despise.
I'm not feeling SIX OF HEARTS. I'm thinking that this author might just not be for me. Her writing style just rubs me the wrong way. I've tried, but this is shot #3 and I have yet to be impressed.

I think I'll move onto Six of Hearts tonight. I'm nervous about a repeat of the Freda situation : l

Hmm..., is that a hint because I've been spamming you for the last four hours (I may have been going through Nenia's Kindle-Stash shelf and grabbing all the free, or very nearly, books)?

Good to know, since I'm not done and nothing's gonna stop me now.

I believe I have the challenge!

I don't have any of those (though I may do soon if they're free/<$1).

I was surprised, too. I think the difference was that I can deal with rape if it's not perpetrated by either of the heroes and definitely not towards their counterpart - I will never believe that a person can be raped by their significant other/significant other-to-be and then fall in love with them/continue to love them, that is the death of a relationship of any kind for me. It also helped that I never felt like this was romantic in any way, so I wasn't emotionally invested in the pairing of Laurent and Damen, which is why I may have more trouble with #2.
MAYBE I CAN WIN YOU OVER TO THE (DARK) BODICE RIPPER SIDE YET!
