Dath. MMC. Deja. FMC. A12-04. Brown skin. Shaved head.
She is eager and wants to find a mate and happiness. I like that. This series has little to no resistance from the FMCs so far. It’s nice that any conflict doesn’t revolve around that. I like that there is a new component of them going feral for each other. I was wondering if it’s because Deja was dreaming of him too before she got to his world. But the story reveals that he is “chosen by the goddess to be stronger so he can protect the human mates. His cousins (Toron and Yril) are also chosen. I enjoyed the push and pull for this story but it dragged on a bit. I’m getting bored of the series and don’t know if I’ll continue.

The way they slowly made their way to each other was so charming and their chemistry was top tier. And I laughed out loud at Killians antics a couple of times. To see their relation blossom alongside Magnolia and Garrek was genuinely a delight. Killian needed a mom and a friend so badly and magnolia easily and effortlessly fell into that role. And his behavior change was so heartwarming. And how exasperated it made Garrek was hilarious.
And his turmoil over loving her when he knows she is destined for his cousin, a cousin he feels he owes his life to and who he wronged is a lovely plot point. Watching that resolve was beautiful. Oaken is a good man and I cannot wait for his story.

Lyonne is one of my favorite authors and a big innocent protective male is my kryptonite. But it was more than just a conglomeration of tropes that I enjoy. I truly loved both characters and all their choices felt true and organic to me. Mia is so fierce and resolute in her love for Cragnorr and her resolve to love and protect him never wavers. It is a beautiful and tender relationship and watching Cragnorr have to fight and suffer in order to protect Mia made me cry and finally rejoice. Also, sue me, but I love the pregnancy and graphic birth. An absolutely delightful 5 ⭐️ read.
Best one of the series so far. I liked the characters and I liked the mutual pining.

In classic Ella Maven there was a lot of grammar issues and confusing some characters. But it wasn’t too bad and didn’t ruin it for me.

Lyonne Riley does it again. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I always enjoy her books, and this one is no exception!
My one qualm is that there is little to no grovel for him rejecting her and making her suffer a broken bond (he didn’t want her bonded to him because he is older and will die sooner and take her with him, leaving any children they have alone).
Things I loved: The main characters themselves. Simka is strong and determined and Jar’kel is grumpy and steady The chemistry between them That good spice How real and raw the relationship felt The realistic portrayal of virgin sex That when he pushed her away he realized how much he fucked up. And he begged for her and cried (though she took him back too easily) The HEA for all parties involved
Well worth a read.

I loved Krogal in the beast book and was STOKED to see he got his own book. It was good until she capitalized on his literal PTSD to manipulate him into fucking her after he watched her die in his arms and he was terrified of hurting her. I hated how flippant she was with his trauma at the end of the book. He watched her die in his arms and was so frightened of losing her again and she taunts him because he is scared to fuck her. She buys toys and tells him he isn’t filling his duties as a husband. What the fuck.
Also super corny. Even for Regine Able.

Well, the Banter remains witty and mostly fun. Some cringe moments, same as the first book.
Things I hated (which I get are opinion): 1. I really didn’t appreciate the depiction of sex work, and the way that her male main character, Caliban, looked down upon the women. That was gross. His inner monologue was that he would clean himself in boiling water after her thigh brushed his, and then he would burn the clothes off his body without touching them after she ran a finger down his shirt. AFTER HE HAD CALLED HER OVER. She was doing what she thought they wanted. She was clearly a sex worker and they beckoned her over, why wouldn’t she think he wanted sex? (though they really only wanted her gossip) and he had the nerve to say he would take 100 baths and burn his ear.
2. I hated the way the MMC kept referring to the FMC as “not beautiful. I like when they aren’t attracted to each other right away and when the love develops and slowly the attraction does as well; but in this case he literally says that he’s half in love with her and still doesn’t find her attractive. But don’t worry; he likes her expressive face and the way she tells stories. Ugh. Didn’t do it for me.
3. Also don’t like love triangles but I get that that is a personal preference.
4. I found slate much more cringy this book. She definitely had some of that in the first book, like when she first saw Caliban and her internal monologue went “Rowr. Down girl. Besides the fact that is incredibly embarrassing, how could that possibly be in a fantasy novel?
MAJOR SPOILERS: So the clocktaurs are being made by a wonder engine that was created the the ancients (the book doesn’t go into how this was done or when) that Brother Amadin found and dug up in Anuket city. That wonder engine originally took dying soldiers and was fed their souls and they became unstoppable soldiers (by birthing and nursing them. Ick). And then Amadin found a different artifact that had been binding demon souls in Anuket (which is why there are no demons there and thus no temple of the dreaming god (who is responsible for binding demons) still not clear on why no one talked about that before and it wasn’t common knowledge even to Caliban who was/is a Paladin of the dreaming god but whatever) and he bound the demon souls to dead bodies and fed those to the wonder engine to make the clocktaurs. Then he connected the two devices with his own body and controlled them all. . . We then later find out after Slate kills Amadin that Brenner is willingly possessed by the Rune demon we met at the end of the last book. Once Amadin is dead all the demons are unbound and Brenner (or his demon) tries to kill Caliban.
More hated things now that context is in 5. Towards the end of the book Slate is TSTL when she tries to save the demon Brenner even after she knows he is a demon and cannot be saved and thus literally puts her and Calibans lives at risk by being a dumb stupid moron idiot. Then THREATENS Calibans life if he does the only thing he can do and kill Brenner????
6. Brenner dies and he is the only character I liked by the end (except the Knoles and being indifferent towards learned Edmund)
7. So many of their choices and motivations made no sense to me and I HATE that in characters. Example. Learned Edmund is too fragile to bring to the clockwork district but he can go on a suicide mission to rescue Slate from the leader of the underworld like 2 seconds before that???
8. There is no HEA or epilogue. They just kinda makeup in the last 1% of the book in a very unsatisfactory way.
Things I did like: 1. The banter. 2. There were no real cases of the book mentioning something that could be a problem later and then never addressing it again until it’s a huge problem later. That always feels lazy to me and this book didn’t have that. For example, slate has big problems in anuket city and while she mentions needing to tell them and doesn’t, it’s addressed quickly and they deal with it. Second example, there are no demons in Anuket; and instead of ignoring it, it is addressed periodically when Caliban brings it up or mentions his demon is quiet or goes to investigate it with slate. this book brings up a problem, and either they admit to it, or the characters continue to think about it the whole time. It’s not just mentioned, and then left for the reader to worry about until there’s a huge problem.
Meh. Very unsatisfactory ending to a duo loft I was really liking originally ...more

It’s the longest 200 something page book I ever fucking read and I cannot believe I wasted my time on it. Honestly it felt pretty gross. He used his sperm to impregnant her. Without telling anyone. Despite having sperm samples we was supposed to use. He read all her private messages and then Impersonated her boyfriend, manipulating her for the study. and kept her essentially isolated and captive during her experimental pregnancy? Barf. But don’t worry, random well respected scientists try to kidnap and kill her to experiment on the (his) baby and he saves her so it’s all okay.
And how fucking dumb is Maya? It could not have been more obvious Kear was writing the letters instead of her incredibly one dimensional boyfriend back home.
